Very cool Brissy. Tell us more, such as - what are they? :)

Sorry, they are humpback whales on their migration route from their tropical birthing grounds off the Queensland coast to Antarctica.
In the last 20 yrs since I've lived here their numbers have increased greatly, now you see them regularly close to the beaches off the Gold Coast and right along the Eastern coast of Australia.

Fantastic Brissy! Nice to hear that the numbers are increasing too. Generally there' so little good news when it comes to the planet's wildlife.

Sorry, I'm very late to this post!

Last time I was in Sydney we were walking along the headland from Coogee to Marourbra and there was a pod (is that the term?) of humpbacks swimming along the coast a few hundred yards out. It was an amazing sight, you could see them all with the naked eye from dry land.

Awesome place. Bobby Fury (some RAWKites will know/remember him!) and I drove out there when I went to visit him in LA. A great place for contemplation and just enjoying the vastness of nature.

I'll try to add some of my own favourite places in here later.
Wish I knew RAWKites were around, Joshua Tree is vast area, and there are some other interesting spots (away from the roads). Carey's Castle is a nice hike.

If anyone visits LA area, drop me a PM and I will gladly point you here and there.

Wow there are some stunning pictures in this thread.
My contribution as a lost Englishman roving around South Africa (I'm not the greatest with a camera)...

Rhino and baby at Kariga in the Eastern Cape

A stubborn buffalo who went from relaxed to 'none shall pass' mode in a few seconds...

You could hear this guy for miles around

These are magnificent in the wild

Time to be quiet, very quiet

The view from the room

Moving on to Impodimo in the Madikwe reserve in the Northern Province (bordering Botswana}

First off the accommodation was fantastic.

The pool area

This elephant wandered in and drank from the pool as we swam...

A random bird

More elephants

Squirrel porn...

More random animals
This one rather helpfully has markings that show the butcher just where to cut...

The scenery was stunning but especially the sunsets

Gorgeous pictures, Rhi! Did you take the boat ride at Iguazu? Gets you soaking wet and very close to the side falls. I have to find some pics from there.

And the safari pics above - I never had a chance to see the big five, just lions and buffalos.

I'm so envious of the people posting photos of rhinos! They're majestic!

Finally, my favourite place on the planet, Iguazu Falls

I cut it down for size but those are some stunning pictures.
I could/should have had some of the best rhino pics ever after we had stopped for a snack on a game drive. We had to quickly climb back into the Landy as two full grown adults meandered in and took a nose around, literally within touching distance. Unfortunately my wife had the camera and was shaking like a leaf...
On another occasion it was me that dropped the ball when we sat and watched a stand off between an elephant and a rhino at Singita in the Sabi Sands reserve, both completing mock charges before the elephant backed off. That had initially started with the mean old elephant mock charging us as we rapidly backed away, happy with his work he turned around only to find the rhino blocking his path, I was too enthralled by what was going on to even think about pictures.
Now I think about it I have been on the wrong end of three elephants bad moods and one rhino charge. I like wildlife but it doesn't seem to like me at times.

We stayed four nights at Kariega mate, we really enjoyed it. Oddly the only reason we chose it was because it's one of very few places that allow you to take young kids along and we really wanted our youngest to have the experience.
Generally we spend a maximum of three or four nights at a game lodge before moving on to fresh territory.
My next jaunt is hopefully going to be a camping trip to the Kagalagadi frontier park which we are planning for next year.
Thanks for the heads up on the bird - I'm fair clueless with them.

Just returned from a 3 week holiday visiting my sister in South AFrica and Lesotho. Both countries are absolutely stunning, particularly Lesotho - a country currently suffering from severe drought and has pretty much no tourist industry so happy to promote it on here!

Sani Pass, South Africa/Lesotho Border

Moteng Pass, Lesotho

Ha Molapo, Lesotho

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve, South Africa

iSimangaliso Wetland Park, St Lucia, South Africa

Not a great photo but sharing for the story. This kite stole a slice of pizza out my hand on the beach while I wasn't looking and it's claws drew blood on my fingers. It dropped the pizza so I picked it up, looked up and it was hovering about 10m above me waiting to pounce again so I threw it about 5m away and it swooped down to grab it.

Ant's nest in a tree(!) in Manguzi near the Mozambique border.

Tembé Elephant Park, near Mozambique border.

We got in a bit of a standoff with this elephant, as it was blocking the road and we were coming from a dead end with no where to go behind us. Eventually he gave in and went off the road and passed the side of us. The elephants in Tembe are famous for having the biggest tusks in the world - this one was apparently pretty average for the park.

Great photos, elmo. Did you see both kinds of rhino there? The one with the impressive horn (oo-er) is part of a pair of white rhinos, but the muddy one looks to be a black rhino. Very impressive all the same.

Thanks Nick. Yeah the elephants are amazing! I forgot to share the photo below - we were lucky enough to witness what must have been over a hundred elephants charging across the hill (not all of them are in the photo, they came in waves), trumpeting. Even the guide wasn't sure what was going on and had never seen anything like it before.

Yes it's a Kudu, we saw loads of antelopes including Impala, Nyala, Rhebok & Duikers but the Kudu were the most impressive.

Thanks ZZ. Unfortunately we only saw white rhinos. It's hard to tell from that picture but you could tell from the pointing up ears, and the shape of it's mouth (not in that picture). You also wouldn't find a black rhino out in the open like that, they stay in forests (and therefore much harder to find). Despite what it looks like, it isn't trying to mate the rock, it is using it to scrape off all the ticks it has picked up during the day.

The hand is fine thanks, was only a little cut but worth it for the story!

You made me doubt my memory of that for a second but yeah black rhinos ears are more rounded than pointy. Apparently (just googled this), the other easy way to tell the difference is by the horns - white rhinos front horn is much longer than the back one, whereas black rhinos horns are more equal in length.

Couple of photos I should have added - we were lucky enough to witness Turtles laying their eggs on the beach.

A loggerhead turtle heading back to the water after failing to get up the sand dunes - it was too steep and it was also cautious due to the thunder and lightning at the time.

It did nothing but rain when I was there! Left a tool box at a camp site and spent the next day going back to look for it so we didn't lose our deposit. Terrible memories! The freshwater lakes in the middle were pretty incredible though.

After posting in the photos thread it was suggested that I give this thread a bump. Nice to remember travelling during these times.
I went on a tour of Patagonia in January 2018, during its summertime but its still cold and the wind was ferocious.
The landscapes in Patagonia are outstanding, the highlight was Parque Nacional Torres del Paine which is dominated by the iconic mountain range. It is one of the places where you feel like you should take a photograph with every step and every slight change in angle. I'll just put up my favourite though:

In terms of wildlife there were guanacos everywhere, not just in the park but in most of patagonia as well. You would often see them on the side of the roads as well as rheas.

There are pumas in the park as well, we went out one dawn trying to find them but unfortunately only found some recently killed guanacos. This was the same place as the puma footage from the recent Attenborough show.

Other wildlife included foxes, Cara Caras and an armadillo that lived on the campsite I was staying at that scurried around happily all day.

The other big hitter in Patagonia is the Perito Moreno Glaciar, the faster moving glaciar in the world.

We got lucky on our trip there and spotted some condors:

Also spotting this guy with his recent catch:

Other cool sightings whilst I was in Patagonia was going to see the only King Penguin colony that isn't in Antarctica

I went to all these places on a 30 day tour from Santiago to Buenos Aires via Ushuaia with a company called Dragoman. There's a lot more I could have included but this is already the longest post I've done on here and feels very self indulgent.

Weird to see penguins in a place that isn't icy! Amazing shots, the first one looks like it's straight out of a movie
