Keith Moon technically far from the best, but the most visually exciting, the most ridiculously over the top and the most important/inspirational rock drummer ever. Yes, yes and yes

You've just hit on a vital ingredient for me. It's why Steve Jones of the Pistols was one of the greatest guitarists. As Lydon said once... 'He always seemed to hit the wrong note at exactly the same time.'

So to carry on this small, but important distraction from 'Best' (although Moon will always be one of the best).. how about Akiko from Comanechi? In my eyes, one of the greatest drummers/frontman (or woman Reg) around today. The song in question, 'Death of You' and was written about their ex tour manager/lawyer called Leo who stiffed them up sometime last year... and I just love that 'Leo.. you fucking retard' line that comes straight after that sublime, heavy tempo shift in mid song... wonderful stuff...

Official video, with nice titty ending
Live version - as you'll want to hear it again I'm sure ;)

Not very famous, but Christian Vander, founder of a weird but great jazz concept band called Magma, is probably one of the best drummer of the past 30 years. His technics and creativy outclass most of the rock drummers.

My favourite is Terry Bozzio, who played with Zappa in the 70's early 80's.
One of his classic solo : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzt6PwuQABk
Him versus Chad Wackerman, another Zappa's drummer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=563Joj7DoD0

Lars Ulrich.

... Haha.

Nah, it's probably Portnoy for a mixture of technique and 'musicality' in his drumming. Can be a flash fucker, as can all of the band, but it never sounds like an exercise, always a musical phrase.

No Keith Moon thought the same, and during his whole career only performed
one once 'unintentionally' too mind. He also did one for ABC TV special with
goldfish inside the toms, it's not a very good indication of his drumming either  ???

Billy Cobham - can play anything from smooth jazz to thrash metal.

Stewart Copeland also thinks he's the best.

They are hard to listen to! Much as I love John Bonham's drumming, I usually skip Moby Dick if I'm listening to a Zeppelin concert.

Levon Helm of The Band is another great Drummer, sings too....which brings me to the question how many great singing drummers can you name?

Off the top of my head i can think of Helm, Kevin Godley (10cc), Don Henley (The Eagles), Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish) and of course Ringo, although some might argue he's neither :)

Jet Black, The Stranglers
I love The Stranglers but come off it. He was a metronome, rudimentary, and he makes a mistake on Nice 'n' Sleazy. And he became a lazy bastard using drum machines in the studio -listen to the drums on '10' -awful!
Of the punk drummers Rat Scabies was the one. He had a real flow to his playing and sounded like a herd of galloping horses.

yeah, he used to come and hassle us at ADC drums, apparently he was quite a player before he hit the ale, just dont get him started on Dave Weckl.
