The Disco and Balearica Thread
« on: October 28, 2011, 10:41:25 am »
as we slip into autumn both literally and figuratively it seems a good time to remember records infused with love and sunshine.

i'd like this thread to be a haven for all things cosmic; groovy and weird but with an irresistible beat.

music that will make you dance all night but sound even better round the swimming pool or at the after party the day after.

to start things off is claudja barry and the tom moulton mix for 'love for the sake of love'

tom effectively invented disco by making reel to reel mix tapes of dance records that he made his own unique edits of literally by using the pause and record buttons or a blade to splice the tape.

the tapes were played at a club called 'the sandpiper' based on fire island which was a gay holiday resort close to new york.

he also did a dance top ten for an industry magazine that also made him one of the most influential figures in the disco scene as it grew into a phenomenon that swept the world.

this is probably hard to conceive for those of us who have grown up in a digital age but how exciting must it have been at the time?

i'm calling this the disco and balearica thread because right now that's where my musical head is at.

its about a vibe as much as a sound and i don't want to be too prescriptive i just want people to post links to excellent records that we can all comment on.

but first claudja barry which is a long time ibiza fave for me and my mates

CLAUDJA BARRY - LOVE FOR THE SAKE OF LOVE (TOM MOULTON MIX)

a beginners guide to tom

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Moulton

Tom Moulton (born 1940) is an American record producer and originator of the remix, the breakdown section, and the 12-inch single vinyl format. He has humbly maintained that the last two innovations were pure accidents. Perhaps contrary to expectation, Moulton's early successes in "mixing down" dance records were the result of insistently taking away elements from the original multi-track.

His career started in the late 1960s with a self-made tape of overlapping songs created for the Fire Island bar and restaurant The Sandpiper.[1] As the club in question was very high profile, it was only a matter of time before his skills were noticed and put to use pre-release by those in the music industry. Moulton preferred R&B and dance music, but actually mixed a wide range of popular recordings. A noteworthy quote has him saying, "I never made a dance record, I made records you can dance to."

Moulton worked as a model at the Bookings and Ford agencies before beginning his production career.[2] Before that, he had worked in the music industry, holding a sales and promotion job at King Records (from 1959 to 1961) and similar positions at RCA and United Artists.[2] He eventually left due to his disgust at the industry's dishonesty.[2]

His notable achievements in recording technique include extending the high frequencies and tightening the bottom for better sounding play at high volume and lengthening for greater musical and emotional impact by repeating key passages.

He was responsible for the first continuous-mix album side ever, on Gloria Gaynor's seminal disco album "Never Can Say Goodbye", earning him the title the "father of the Disco Mix" .[3] Among some of his other success in mixing songs are The Three Degrees' "Dirty Ol' Man", MFSB featuring The Three Degrees "Love Is The Message", B.T. Express' "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)", The Trammps' "Disco Inferno", People's Choice's "Do It Any Way You Wanna", The Andrea True Connection's "More, More, More" First Choice's "Doctor Love", and Claudja Barry's album "The Girl Most Likely".

Between 1977 and 1979, he produced Grace Jones' first three albums,[4] including one of the singer's biggest hits, her rendition of Édith Piaf's "La Vie en rose".[5]

Tom Moulton's innovative work was honored at the 2004 Dance Music Hall of Fame ceremony in New York City when he was inducted for his achievements as a Remixer. He is the official archivist of the Bethlehem Jazz and Salsoul music catalogues, and has overseen all of the digital remastering for the entire catalog. In late 2006 Moulton would remix the Brand New Heavies (featuring N'Dea Davenport) single "I Don't Know (Why I Love You)", a cover of the Stevie Wonder and Jackson 5 hit.

A Tom Moulton Mix is a phrase indicating that a dance record had been mixed by Tom Moulton. Prior to Moulton (and throughout his active years), no major player had prefaced their name with "A" and followed it with "Mix". One will find examples of this usage today, but in Mr. Moulton's heyday such usage was unheard of for those seeking respect in the industry. Moulton's use of the phrase led to similar usage by his contemporaries within the Salsoul Records family. Such usage would have given him the status of "mentor" rather than infringe his territory. In a late 1990s interview, Mr. Moulton himself cast aspersion upon Vincent Montana Jr.'s attempt to use this titling (Montana and Moulton were known to have had a difficult professional relationship).

"A Tom Moulton Mix" was later used as the title of a compilation of Moulton's remixes on Soul Jazz Records. Tom's remixes, both past and present, continue to be played on radio stations today, and more recently aired on Retro Soul Radio London, are Tom's outstanding Philly Regrooved Albums. Retro Soul Radio presenters Dave Simons and Neil Winter had the pleasure of speaking with Tom about his career, his music and his passion for the music industry. The interview was aired on Retro Soul Radio with his fans from all over the world locked in for over 2 hours listening to his tracks and what he had to say about them.

Since then Tom has been a regular guest on Disco935, an Internet radio station which features disco music. His shows there are listened to by fans world wide and are downloaded by thousands. In 2011 he is busier than ever, remixing the classics as well as new songs and has 2 major releases forthcoming in 2012.

on a pure balearic tip this is a wonderfully weird italian record that i imagine must have sounded amazing in rimin in 1976.

imagine all those euro disco bunnies driving down from switzerland and germany for a sunday session in the italian seaside party capital with this playing.

First heard this track on a Unabombers cd. What can you say about Grace Jones? Made infamous for beating up Russell Harty live on telly, she also made some great records, and despite the Mickey Mouse ears in this vid, was a bona fide style icon.

i fucking love grace jones.  she has made so many unbelievable records that sound as fresh today as they did when she made them.  some friends put her on in edinburgh and glasgow on the condition that she didn't use a backing tape and played live with sly and robbie.  they had fallen out spectacularly back in the day but she turned up and smashed it after 'lines of supply had been secured'.  she also did Ł14k worth of damage to the kitchen of the flat she was staying in and i can only hazard a guess as to why that is ;)

chic wrote another of their massive dance floor hits 'freak out' on a frozen new years eve when they'd been refused entry to studio 54 due to the colour of their skin - they were specifically invited by that nights star turn grace jones.  it wasn't a white only club but being aimed at the jet set schrager and rubell wanted to reflect a vanilla version of society.  anyway the boys went home; tucked into their 8 ball and started shouting 'fuck off' over the all time banger bassline that became 'freak out'.  glory days indeed.

Have you seen them live? They're supposed to be fantastic. I only ask as they're playing the Warehouse Project the night after Cocoon. Might have to bounce over and see them.

So much of an opportunity that I may have to call upon the Mother Hen to dust off one of her sequined dresses to show us how it was done back in the day. She wasn't a fan of Studio 54 either!

friday night special and probably the best record you can possibly finish a set with if its 4pm on a sunday afternoon on a terrace in ibiza.

italians do it better and this is chilly's cover of the blues classic 'for your love' this is an all time banger.

covered by led zeppelin in its time no one gives it the same unrelenting peak time cascade as chilly.

inextricably linked with sun, excess and beautiful italian girls dancing in their bikinis in 1978.

at least on planet hass.

play loud.

if you had to follow chilly - and i'd suggest turning it all off to let everyone have a bit of a cheer and a hug - the trail remix of fleetwood mac's 'you make love fun' is a great first record.  even better if the person before has been dulling it up and not really thinking about the ladies.  in my experience they love this one.

originally posted free on trail's blog and discovered (for me) by my mate acid ted i'm unaware of him doing anything as good as this since.  big record.

big early in the evening record from first choice.  i think this band was conceived as a dance crossover act but despite making some of the best disco records of all time it just didn't happen.  no accounting for taste.  still they're without doubt one of the most sampled bands of all time.  primarily house but also hip hop and pretty much across the board.  this is one of my three faves and is a great way to start a flat, grey monday.

Nice thread.

I love almost everything that comes from the Italians Do It Better/Johnny Jewel label. Chromatics especially. Nightdrive with You is a stone cold classic. Glass Candy too. Then there's Desire - a bit less disco but blissed out bliss nonetheless. This oozing melancholy beauty is a particular fave.

I'd throw this in here too. One of my (many) albums of the year which has a strain of the Balearics (sounds painful) to my ears. The whole album is the sound of pure sadness. Or maybe that's just me.

on a wistful tip this is one of my contenders for the greatest record of all time.

recorded in 1982 by expansives a close friend paid €144 and we think its a bargain.

the plaintive vocal in the fractured english conjures up images of the most decadent and euphoric parties back in the time before house.

i simply adore it.

i remember having been awake for a very long time and contemplating sleep but then this came on an banished all hope of rest until night fell.

again.

a steel drum cover version of the gary numan classic and the original is the first record i ever bought in december 1979.

recorded in 1982 by expansives a close friend paid €144 and we think its a bargain.

the plaintive vocal in the fractured english conjures up images of the most decadent and euphoric parties back in the time before house.

i simply adore it.

the cissy strut track is a peach - i will be sharing with acid ted as soon as LA wakes up though strictly solids at chateau hass ;)

re expansives they made four 12" releases and this is the pick of the bunch.

i first heard it at an after after after party at a villa in ibiza and it literally blew the top of my head off.

all that heartfelt love and yearning packed into a record that probably got hammered in about 5 nightclubs in the world for a couple of months in 1982.

delving back into the past just shows how much more interesting things have been.

its so easy to live in the moment when we have a global club culture and access to everything instantly but this record was tracked down by a dear friend.

long may he continue.  i'm going to hear him play a bollywood set in brighton next weekend and will be reporting back on any gems.

a personal balearic fave this is a white island staple in the hassinators playlists.

paul mccartney has made some astoundingly good records since he left the beatles which all work very well in ibiza.

my 9000 post and it seems a good time to post a link to my mate luca's track with the inimitable ali love on vocals.

this is a stunning beautiful song and a really excellent video seemingly suggesting a dmt based voyage across the cosmos.

The Luca C track is sweet - and on a similar theme, this should'nt fit in but just does - been one of my favourite records from a long time ago. I think 'DMT voyage across the cosmos' could well be applied to it too.

High bpm's for a disco record, but a classic all the same...the version I remember is "poppin' pills and smokin' weed" instead of "gainin' weight & losin' sleep". There's a version on youtube where some of the comments are hilarious...the lyrics seem to have whooshed a few sensitive modern day listeners...

'no blacks, no jews and no gays'

i'd never paid attention to the lyrics before - is this a wind up?
