Did Morgan not realise Wood had an over left.

Feel like he's lost his numbers this game?

Yeah, bowled Root so that he could keep the likes of Wood up his sleeve. Pick of the bowlers again, Woakes bowled well too I thought.

Rashid? What was he thinking of?

Not going to pin that on Morgan, it worked to get rid of Maxwell. On a tough deck to get started facing Rashid is not easy. Starc just got hold of one. Might help is our pace bowling wasn’t middle of the road and he had somebody he could trust other than Archer.

Don’t hear the word bilateral very often, let alone two (now maybe three) posts in a row!

Great game, really tense finish, just a shame it didn't go to a Super Over!

Quite daunting thinking that there is now no winter series to look forward to, gonna miss it. Suppose I'll have to settle for watching the blast and Lancs mauling Yorkshire again later this week! Not as good as an international, but at least its a bit more cricket.

Is it just me, or has this summer given us the best ever set of cricket matches collectively across all three formats?  It's hard to remember a bad match (apart from the washout against Pakistan).  It's just left me wanting more.

Fair play to the Aussies. I thought England getting to 300 was below par, but when you're 0-2 then you need to re-evaluate a bit. Morgan and Billings got out softly and Bairstow got done by a beauty. The margins aren't big but on another day England post 340 there and probably put the game out of reach regardless.

For the Aussies, Maxwell is always capable of an innings like that and Carey has a nice balance of power and placement. For England, Billings has done his chances no harm going forward but he's not dislodging Stokes so you wonder who he would replace. Roy needs a serious bounce back to form as well because Banton will be eyeing up his spot, IMO.

TBF he was facing the floor and he was pretty close to the dirt when he released the ball. The approved technique for something like this is to throw yourself at the ball whilst facing skywards, which means you can see what's behind you and can better position your throw to your following up team mate. There's a Sri Lankan player who was the pioneer of this, first saving a six in the manner of this video, then going one better and throwing the ball back up to retrieve and turn into a legit catch in a second incident.

Bairstow, and perhaps surprisingly, Mark Wood have missed out on ECB Test contracts for the next year.  I'm not sure if these extend to the Ashes tour next winter (presuming it goes ahead), as I would have thought Mark Wood would be exactly the sort of bowler they'd need, rather than both Woakes and Curran. Not that I have anything against either of them.  No real surprises elsewhere.

Test central contracts

Quote
James Anderson (Lancashire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Rory Burns (Surrey), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

Limited over central contracts

Quote
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Tom Curran (Surrey), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).

Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Dom Bess and Chris Jordan on increment contracts.

Doesn’t mean Wood can’t or won’t be selected for an Ashes your, Hague’s it just means they’re not wanting to pay him a full contract if they’re unsure how much of a part he’ll play.

I know, the touring party is usually 15 or 16, I just thought they might have given him one as a sign of confidence/belief in him, that he’s one of our main guys for Australia.  But then again he breaks down a lot, so you’re probably right.

so much cryarsing about this.

a) it doesn't mean mark wood can't be picked for test squads/teams
b) the next ashes tour will be after next year's contracts are given out anyway

His fitness issues are more than enough reason not to give him a central contract imo
