The UEFA Europa Conference League...

'The new competition will be played on Thursday nights, alongside the UEFA Europa League, and aims to give more teams the chance of winning European honours'.

The competition is scheduled to run from the 2021–22 season, and will serve as the bottom level of the existing UEFA Europa League competition, which is due to be reduced from 48 to 32 teams in the group stage.

The competition will primarily be contested by teams from lower-ranked UEFA member associations. In all, 184 teams will be involved over the course of the season including at least one from each of the 55 associations and 46 clubs transferring from either the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League.

There will be eight groups of four teams, followed by knockout round play-offs, the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

The eight group winners automatically go through to the last 16. Additional knockout round play-offs will then be played before the round of 16 between the eight group runners-up and the third-ranked teams of the UEFA Europa League groups.

I thought they might have brought the old cup winners cup trophy out of retirement for this.

Not sure what that thing he’s holding is.  Looks like he got it in a street market selling cheap memorabilia knock offs.

A whole season to try and qualify for a tournament no-one wants to qualify for!
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Now that we’re in the CL we can go back to taking the piss out of Spurs for being in this and of the blueshite for failing to qualify for it.

Depends how the Europa goes. If a team bottles it there they drop into this!

Yep. Looks like a knockoff UEFA Cup

Roma vs Spurs final, nailed on.

At least one of Roma and Spurs should be reaching the final. If Villarreal beat Man Utd, Spain won't even have a participant. The format of this is an absolute mess with some leagues (Switzerland, Greece) not receiving automatic EL spots anymore. Should have been more EL-lite, including dropping sides from the EL to make it more competitive.

I get the idea of the competition. Gives the European teams that have zero chances in the Champions league and Europa league a reason to qualify and take part. I like that it is a competition that is weighed more in the favour of those countries that dont get many chances in Europe

That being said, 4pm kick offs are going to be horrible, travelling to countries that dont necessarily have a great track record of holding football matches, playing for the chance of playing Europa league football...

And BT sport got the TV rights. This should have been a competition that is put on Free to Air TV like Channel 5

This is a competition that teams in England will end up fighting to avoid. The league cup or 7th Spot in the premier league will become the cursed position

The Uefa Cup is the best looking trophy by a mile I think.

Not sure they should have the teams from the big countries in this. If you are doing a competition for smaller countries then do that. What is the point in Spurs and Roma being in this?

why do any of the smaller clubs enter the FA cup?  they know they wont win  but a chance to play one of the big boys - that carrot has to be in there otherwise there would be less than x=zero interest in this from fans/tv companies/teams alike

There was a tweet I remember laughing my arse off when he joined them. Was something along the lines of 'Mourinho will win Roma the Conference League then claim he's a bigger club legend than Totti' - The thing is it's something he genuinely would do  ;D

Certain teams have seemingly taken to this quite well. The likes of Roma and Feyenoord who haven't had much success in recent years will certainly be looking forward to it. For me though it's a bit of a joke, there was no need to make a 3rd European trophy. I wish the Europa League could have been made a bit better somehow, focus on improving it's standard which has dropped massively over the years.

Honestly think this might be a better game than the Europa League final was. Not entirely sure about Feyenoord but Roma can't really defend like Mourinho wants so they've been very attacking in the games I've watched and there's almost no score line that would surprise me.

Kind of odd in that I think the Europa League has gotten way more competitive with the addition of the Europa Conference. If you look at the group stages and knockout rounds, some of the match-ups wouldn't be out of place in the CL.

Also think adding the Conference is hopefully just the first in doing more to stabilize European football as a whole as there are then more European spots for more teams available. Especially with the smaller leagues the one team that gets CL or EL creates a huge monetary disparity very quickly. More should have been focused on trying to distribute more to the bottom end of the food chain than expanding the CL which is just going to top leagues anyway.

They never replaced the Cup Winners Cup when they stopped that competition, I just see this as its belated replacement.

I actually like the competition, as it gives those clubs who usually do badly in Europe, ie Spurs, or those with no European experience, a chance the cut their teeth against clubs of a similar level and learn what it is all about, then step up into the Europa League.  If we were only good enough to finish 7th, I'd be made up to play in it and win it.

Is this the new Manchester United piss-take thread?  Hadn't seen it before so I'm guessing the title is to pay homage to the competition Ten Hahahahag's boys will be languishing in come Spring 2023?

Sadly, United squeezed into the Europa League due to West Ham capitulating against Brighton.

They give me a headache. Believe me, they're killing me. One day people's conversations on the street will do me in." Terry Hall

Think that's an interesting point and especially true if you are a club like say West Ham or a Real Sociedad if you want to choose a foreign option, those sort of teams who might more often than not be around those low top-half places.

I remember last season when things were looking pretty grim I just kept saying keep us out of the Conference League, but I wouldn't have even minded playing in the Europa League because I'd more than fancy us to win it and have always been a fan of the competition, even in recent years where it's not been what it was in the past. It's obviously not something a Liverpool fan would want to be in and in the future of course you'd like to think we'll still be competing in the Champions League on a regular basis.

It's interesting to see where this competition goes. It's ended with quite a few strong sides like Roma/Feyenoord/Marseille/Leicester who are all teams who could probably have been at the business end of the Europa League in recent years. Roma and Feyenoord are well established and seem quite happy to be here tonight so fair enough. Next few years will be interesting, will success in the competition act as that springboard up into the Europa League? Will there be a particular team who establishes themselves at this level ala Sevilla in the Europa League? Should be interesting to see who has success in the competition, perhaps even some clubs outside the top 5 leagues.

Got it on but only half watching.  Being free on BT's YouTube helps.
