Set pieces.
« on: July 8, 2011, 09:20:58 am »
Who takes what?  :o

We have Gerrard, Adam, Henderson, Suarez, Aurelio and Meireles who could all contribute to them. There's also Kuyt for PK's.

It'll be interesting for the oppositions keeper.  ;D

Let Adam take the corners, mix up the rest?

Adam should take the corners at least and Gerrard should be banging them in outside the box. Direct free kicks will be more tricky, we have many options for those.

I'd like to see Adam take the corners and long free kicks from the flanks, Aurelio corners from the right if available, Suarez the direct free kicks and also Aurelio free kicks from the right if available.

It'll be brilliant to have so many options. I'd just let Adam take ALL corners and tell Gerrard to lurk outside the box. Just had a vision of that 'planned' free kick youtube vid where all four of them run up but no-one hits it lol. Someone find it!

We are almost certain to win a penalty shootout now, with Adam, Dirk, Suarez, Stevie (who will be the last one?), and Pepe..

I could imagine Carroll hammering in a penalty into the top corner with that left foot of his.

Regardless who takes what, it's been clear for years that we score too few from set plays, and concede too many. In terms of the former, we now have lots of options: good delivery from Stevie, Charlie Adam, Glen Johnson etc, and some good 'uns on the receiving end at long last, too. Looking forward to seeing Carroll causing mayhem with the quality of delivery he's going to get. At the other end it's still a bit of a worry. Soto is what he is, but we still need a Sami Hyppia figure to bring proper aerial strength and organisation to the back line. All in good time, no doubt. Things are shaping up.

We're liverpool, we play in red and we're shite at set pieces.

Dunno whether any of the al' arses can confirm but according to my al' fella we've always been shite at them, even when we were ripping it up.

Common sense would suggest that Carroll will eat up any quality deliveries, but I don't expect it to change even with the Mercurial Mr Adam taking them!

In order of priority:
Corners - Adam, Meireles, Gerrard (last choice or quick ones)
Direct FK's - Suarez, Adam,Gerrard , Aurelio
Indirect FK's - Henderson, Adam, Gerrard,
Penalties - Kuyt, Gerrard, Suarez, Carroll, Adam, Meireles, Maxi, Henderson, Agger, Pepe

Indirect FK's - Henderson, Adam, Gerrard, Suarez
Penalties - Gerrard, Kuyt, Suarez, Adam

This. It's good to have options for example at the moment Stevie takes the majority of free kicks and if he hasn't got his shooting boots on at least now we've other players to step up and have a crack.

Having Suarez and Adam stood over each indirect and direct free kick in shooting distance of the goal - with Gerrard and Aurelio sniffing around - would give any goalkeeper a few nightmares.  I think our set pieces could earn us a good number of points next season.

Surprised at how many would have Gerrard outside the box for corners.

He's 6 ft plus, knows how to time a run and how to attack the ball and has good heading technique. Get him in there.

When was the last time you saw someone fire in goal from the ball getting headed away from a corner? Bit of a myth if you ask me. Doesnt happen nearly enough to sacrifice one of our best header's of the ball.

Aye.
Adam works mainly from the right, not so much from the left.
Gerrard is fine from the left for free-kicks, and stood off the free-kick taker to hit the moving ball for central free-kicks.
Gerrard shouldn't be allowed to take any corners ever again.  Ever.  It's bloody stupid it's been allowed to go on this long, particularly since as a couple have pointed out, he's a good option to have either in the box or just outside it for clearances.

I think set pieces is why next year we will be in the top 3. We will no longer be held by teams playing 5-5-0 because we will break them down with corners and free kicks.

I am happy now.

We’re all getting excited about what Adam’s delivery can do for Carroll and the centre backs. The way he really fizzes them in I think it could actually benefit Dirk the most. We’ve seen him score a few over the years where he plants himself in front of the keeper and any kind of touch sends it in – the way Adam hits them should be perfect for this.

Signing Adam is great news - our threat from corners has been minimal for years now.

Indeed, as for the timing of the run he scored a very good header earlier on in the season for us. I forget who against. Think Torres crossed the ball.

Think Gerrard will be more of a threat in the air at corners so.........

Corners - Adam
Penalties - Dirk Kuyt (trusted with the KFC receipe)
Free kicks - Adam / Suarez

What is good about our number of set piece takers, the keeper will have no idea who's taking it for sure and that's going to really test a keeper's positioning and the way the wall is set up.

Will probably be:

Adam - FKs and Corners on the right.
Gerrard - FKs and Corners on the left.
Suarez - Close-range FKs.
Gerrard - FKs a bit further out.
Gerrard - Penalties.

Spot on anywhere round the box Adam and Suarez should take them indirect free kicks should be laid off to Gerrard to smash and Adam and Raul to take the corners  :D
