By TOM HAYS
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities are increasing security on the city's mass transit system after word of a credible threat of a bombing on the New York City subway, a law enforcement official said Thursday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of an official announcement, said the threat is "specific to place, time and method," and that the method is bombing.

Rep. Peter King of New York confirmed the threat, saying "Obviously, this is a significant threat."

King is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

lots of footage all over the news stations here, should be more soon after the press conference, the sources on tv news channels say specifically 19 suitcase bombs were to be placed in the subway...

NY-AmericanRed:
Nineteen?

There might be something to this, and the number suggests a clue into who is involved in the threat.  Remember there were 19 hijackers who caused the disaster on September 11.

nyujvary:
possibly...press conference is on now...

NY-AmericanRed:
Al-Qaeda tend to work a lot with symbols and such
