Roger:
FRENCH first division runners-up Monaco were demoted to the second division today because of financial irregularities, the league announced.

The decision is subject to an appeal, which must be lodged within six days.

The demotion of the club coached by former French international captain Didier Deschamps follows a meeting on May 21 between Monaco club president Jean-Louis Campora and league officials inspecting the club's finances.

Monaco's debt is officially put at 53 million euro ($95m) but sources at the club say it is closer to 80 million euro ($145m).

Monaco finished second to league champions Lyon in the championship which ended last week and qualified for a place in the lucrative European Champions League.
