He is out for Spurs despite the fact he missed mid-week. We definitely need two centre backs in January - one as a long term partner for Virgil and one as reliable back up so that Fab can go back into midfield as Ox/Keita cannot be relied on either

Is Matip's back his long term injury issue, or is it something else?

Unfortunately Joe has his own injury issues, plus we have no way of knowing how him and VVD will recover. We definitely need 1 center back in January anyway.

Jesus fuckin Christ Joel put your arms down, stop messing about and get back in the cotton wool

Too much cotton wool is baaaaaad for lumbar support. Probably led to his bad back...

I suffer, as I suspect many on here do, from a bad back. Often there is no rhyme or reason as to why it "goes" but I suspect being a pro footballer means you are putting a little more strain on it than my sedentary lifestyle !

If he happier if he was fit for Spurs (obvs), and give him a rest at Palace where Phillips could hopefully deal with Benteke.

Difficult one because if he isn't 100% I'd be tempted to leave him out so that this doesn't become a longer term problem. At the same time, we're much stronger with him and putting in two CM's in CB isn't ideal but I feel we need someone more proven than Phillips and Williams in this because of the qualities of Kane and Son.

I mean in terms of putting it out. I know what you mean about contributing to your own problem, but with doing what an elite level player has to go through, if you have an underlying issue (stenosis, trapped nerve etc) then it will be easily aggravated

Not really, there's no correlation. "Underlying issues" happen in everyone whether they have back pain or not and they don't necessarily mean that they are contributing to that pain (see attached study findings done in 2015 on people with no back pain). Backs are strong and robust, exercise and activity is good for them and Matip being a pro footballer doesn't make him more likely to have back issues.

If he hasn't been ruled out, I think he will start. Doubt Klopp would announce his starting lineup 24 hours early so he will give Joel as much time as possible to recover and put him in. As mentioned above, Philips will likely start on Saturday.

Matip's wife must be well chuffed with the physio staying over to work on him through the night.

Or maybe she enjoys that, who am I to judge.

Meh, am not expecting to see him v Spurs or Palace. Have been here before with Joel sadly, where a seemingly minor injury turns into a longish lay off. Will be pleasantly surprised if he plays again between now and Christmas.

Yep.

You can usually predict someones lifestyle as spending lots of time sitting down.  Office workers and drivers are particularly prone to bad backs.  You can add being overweight to that too.

Always thought Agger ridiculously overrated by our fans, Matip towers over him.

Our five best CB's during the Prem years have been

1. Virgil
2. Matip
3. Gomez
4. Hyypia
5. Henchoz

You say Agger is ridiculously overrated by fans and then you put Henchoz at #5? Henchoz's great, esp in Houllier's first years but no way he's above Agger.
