Wouldn't normally recommend anyone go anywhere near Talksport, or Jim White, or even Murphy - but a really nice little 5 minute piece from Murphy about Houllier today.
Danny was boss today.
Better today than yesterday...........

Apart from the '3 Cups' in 2000/01 - I also remember fondly the start of the 2001/02 season, when we beat United in the Charity Shield, Haka (Finland) 9-1 on agg to qualify for the CL group stage and beat Bayern in the Super Cup Final.....what a start ! Great memories Ged - thank you & RIP

This news has really hit me, awful awful news

RIP Gerard
Didi Hamann

In the corridors and changing rooms of Anfield I met many people - the great, the talented, the legendary.  I know that I only met one genius.  He was a small, smiling man with a neatly clipped beard.  His name was Rafael Benitez.

We are a class above not because of our success, but because of the class of the people who have always represented us. This is what Gerard has always been to me - class personified.

I was in Stockholm watching that 2001 final against the Gunners with a mix of Arsenal and Liverpool supporters, Irish and English and Scottish. What a day that was. It's crazy how your
memories sit on you like a physical weight.

Merci monsieur. Rest in Peace. You'll never walk alone.

I was in Sydney. Midnight kick off, that’s an incredibly long period of pre match nerves to drink your way through! The pay off at the end was worth every second though. Absolutely bananas.

And in a relatively short space of time he gave us so many memories that will stay with me forever. I’m truly grateful for all he did for our club.

Really sad to hear this. He loved Liverpool, the city and the football club and you could tell was so proud to manage the Reds.

Gave us back a taste of success, well more than a taste actually, a feast. That 00-01 season is one of my favourite ever following this club and I’ll never forget the trips to Barcelona and Cardiff and Dortmund that Ged gave us. He got the show back on the road.

RIP boss, merci beaucoup for everything.

That week from beating Arsenal in Cardiff to Alaves 4 days later in Dortmund and then finishing it off at Charlton on the Sunday is pretty much impossible to top as a week, isn't it?
We've had great days, and of course great seasons since, but those 3 games in 8 days were just magical. A friend of mine went to Dortmund. I met up with him on the Friday night, and we was still quite shook. He thought that there was no chance of winning at Charlton if his body was a yardstick to go by  ;D

Maybe slightly hyperbolic but in my mind we’d barely had a big game in the whole of the 90s in terms of what we’d class as one here, and then that season was full of them. He pretty much bought back big European nights at Anfield that season
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

It shouldn't be (and often is) overlooked what Houllier did for this club which to be frank, was an absolute fucking shambles both on and off the pitch when he came in. To get it from where it was in 1998 to winning the treble (plus Community Shield and Super Cup) in 2001 is up there with how quickly Klopp turned us around and set us up to become a modern, competitive club in the 00's only for it to be undone by the financial side of things thanks to the Yanks.

It did kind of slowly go downhill for Houllier following the European Cup exit to Leverkusen but to be honest he never really came back the same manager after his near-death IMO (at least for Liverpool, because he did eventually do well for Lyon).

Istanbul was a one off and can never really be matched but 2001 was by far the best season of this club after 1990 until at least 2017-2018.

It's sad but I'm glad he got nearly another 20 years of life after the illness that very likely should have killed him.

I was at Alsop High School in 1970 when Gerard Houllier was the French 'Assistant' at the school for 12 months. I can't remember much about his French teaching but I can remember that every time we had a school match, or even for football training, he would be there. He just loved the game with a passion. RIP 'Sir'.

I don't have a lot of time for Murphy usually nowadays but that is a lovely tribute.

Very similar to Carragher's comment - they clearly see him not just as someone who kickstarted their career and helped them succeed as players - but someone who shaped them into better people than they otherwise might have been. Probably not so much with Gerrard and Owen who were "generational" to use an awful modern phrase - but there are probably a fair few players with equal or more talent than Carragher and Murphy who disappeared in their early 20s partially as a result of not having a true leader/mentor figure as a manager who cared about them.

My heart sank seeing the thread title. I am heartbroken.

Growing up in India, one would usually find themselves surrounded by Man Utd fans who starting following them since they were the most successful team. Then in 2004/2005, we saw a spurt of Chelsea fans which was in line with their success on the pitch. But I had my head turned by Liverpool because of two reasons: 1) my father's friend brought me our home and the third kit as a gift for me the budding footballer, and 2) I had witnessed live (and in those days football wasn't usually live in India) Houllier's men take a 3-0 commanding lead against Alaves, throw it away and then win the UEFA Cup. The image of Ged carrying the UEFA Cup will always remain etched in my memory.

Mistakes were made, things were said but one thing you cannot was Ged's love for Liverpool and his commitment to making us the best team. He had a major role to play in the rise of our greatest footballer (in my humble opinion, sorry Kenny) among many others. I will forever be grateful to Ged for ensuring that an 11 yr old boy from thousands of miles away grew up supporting the mighty Reds.

Rest in peace, Ged. YNWA.
Mark my words. Top 8 will be a massive struggle.
We won't make any big signings this season and we will go back to being a top4 club.
