RAWK's Advent Calendar : My favourite player #1. RAY CLEMENCE.
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:46:42 pm »
Its December and that means its time to bring out the Advent Calendar.
In the interest of keeping our members off the chocolate and fannying about searching for the door marked 17 and realising your little brother ripped it off about two weeks ago, RAWK is delighted to present to you, your very own Advent's Calendar. Each day leading up to the 25th and including that day, we'll present to you a different writer's take on players who mattered to the club. Now before anyone gets on their high horse, this isn't a definitive list of who we think are the best players at our club. That would be an exercise more divisive than asking King Herod to head up Mothercare at this time of year. Instead it started off as a list of favourite players but quickly became a collection of articles on players who for one reason or another had an impact on the club and are players of importance in our history.

Think of it as a selection box, something for everyone and the dog can have Sean Dundee. (if he appears in the list of course, not giving anything away now..... ;) )

So enjoy reading passionate, well written threads by passionate writers, one each day leading up to Christmas. I'm starting with my favourite player: Ray Clemence.

As a boy I never played football at any level beyond the park. As an asthmatic, I could hardly jog the length of myself anyway and coupled with a complete lack of ability and competitive yen, I always ended up in goals. Not only that but I spent a large part of my childhood in Scunthorpe and always had a soft spot for the local small club. So when I discovered that Liverpool's goalie used to play for the Iron, that's probably the 2 reasons why for me, Ray Clemence is the subject of my favourite player.

There are clubs that are known for a particular type of player: Liverpool were known for having amazing players in lots of departments, but the goalkeepers at our club are legendary in the mad mad world of the man between the sticks.

The Flying Pig (Tommy Lawrence)
Clemence
Grobbalaar
Elisha Scott
David James,
Dudek
Pepe Reina

but to name a select few of LFC's wonderful past goalies (and present)

They are all greats in the game...

But for me Ray is the stand out amongst them, with respect to Elisha of course... and out of all my Liverpool teams I've loved, he's still one of my favourite all time players in any position.

Signed from Scunny for £18,000 in 1967, he replaced Tommy Lawrence full time in 1969/70 and in his first game, he played against Swansea, we won 2-0.

He saved a penalty against Borussia Munchengladbach in the '72/'73 UEFA Cup finals and although they won 2-0 at theirs, his stop meant we won overall. Otherwise they would've won on away goals. He did the same against Dresden a few years later.

I can't remember which season it was but he only let in 16 goals all season, and from a pool of 14 players Liverpool won the league. 16 goals... think about it, all season... (looked it up, it was the 1978/79 season). Astonishingly only 4 4! were conceded at Anfield. He was responsible for giving Anfield the name Fortress. For making other teams think they'd already lost when they arrived.

I don't care much for England but him and Shilton shared the number 1 shirt for years, of course I thought Ray should've had it permanently, but it probably extended his Liverpool career right up til 1981 when Bruce replaced him and he moved to Spurs. I was gutted. He embodied Liverpool over that time, 12 years as the goalkeeper during my childhood, watching him in the dark green shirt, making saves and organising the many different terrific defences we had in front of him. 12 years in a time where the football was more fighting than feinting, and where most penalty areas were more quicksand and mud than grass. He survived being bullied by some of the biggest thugs in football, Joe Jordan, Gordon McQueen when he came up for corners, Chopper Harris from Chelsea and so on.

To play in the 70's was to live with the tough and unrelenting, in games where the yellow card rarely saw the light of day and to get a red card, a gun, or life threatening injury usually to be involved.

These days goalies are given the benefit of the doubt, in those days WWF had nothing on the penalty box shenanigans. The back pass pick up wasn't ruled illegal but that was about the only thing that was softer then. Ray Clemence didn't bully his way into history books, he played his way. Standing in the goal mouths of away grounds where you were lucky if it was only abuse that was thrown at you, Clem was rarely booked and I'm not sure but I don't think he was ever sent off.

Clem for me was just basically a fantastic footballer who never hogged the limelight, always seemed a decent guy and became the Liverpool goal.

He had 665 appearences for us, winning the league, the European Cup, the UEFA Cup, the FA Cup, the League Cup. He is one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the world and his knowledge and humilty in the game is legendary. And out of those 665 appearences, he kept a clean sheet in 335 of them... Over half of his games.

None of your fancy dan silky soccer skilled latter day saints for me.. Ray Clemence is my favourite player because to me, he was Liverpool.

He gave the Fortress to Anfield, a feeling that persisted for a long long time after Ray had moved on. It was him, and the defences of his career that were the bedrock on which Keegan, Toshack, Dalglish et al could build their attacking football on. He enabled Liverpool to become the great team it is today and enabled Anfield to become a place where teams came to fail.

I still love goalies and I still love their madness, their uniqueness and their contributions to the game. Ray wasn't crazy, he wasn't a dribbler of the ball, he wasn't a madcap shaky legged hairdo though. He was and will remain for me always, a goalkeeper, a shotstopper and one of the finest men to play for LFC.

My favourite player: Ray Clemence.

Really liked that nice insight. My personal favourite keeper has always been Elisha Scott personally. It's not because he impressed me with his playing, it's just the hair man. That hair was so thick it could've stopped a depleted uranium shell.

He's also responsible for ensuring a lot of Liverpool legends from that era get together, reminisce and get pissed according to David Johnson!

Great read Hinesy. I didn't know he was responsible for the name Fortress.

Harinder mate, I'm bestowing that honour to him and the defences of the 70's but possibly some arl arse will point out it was there before.
Certainly from my point of view, if Clem wasn't responsible for it, he certainly reinforced it like no-one since.

thanks BP. He wasn't a dribbler nor great thrower of the ball insomuch as it wasn't as common practice throw the ball as much and him pretty sure it was substantially heavier too so the distance would've been cut down. However Liverpool's defence used to start with the striker and there was a unified approach to passing and moving across the team and pitch. Goalies were afforded very little protection in those days and where Clemence would've fitted right in was in dealing with the big forwards of today:Drogba, Carroll and the like. He was quick and strong and didn't take any shit. So in some respects that position is probably the best one to make the transition from old to modern game.

Lovely piece Hinesy.

Clem was the most elegant keeper I've ever seen, being simply incapable of an ugly dive or a messy stop. Even his mistakes looked somehow beautiful. Even the way he picked himself off the turf after being beaten had grace (I'm trying to think of a famous goal where he rose from the  ground like Lazarus. A sort of dance as he got back to his feet. Was it Bathenay's at Anfield?)

He was elegant but he was also brave. The archetypal Clemence save was at the feet of a forward who'd beaten the offside trap and was headed for goal. It takes immense courage to put your head and neck in the line of a swinging boot. I don't know how goalies do it. Clemence did it all the time.

I was on the Kop when he returned with Spurs on the day we won the Title. Two of those forty thousand raised arms clapping are mine. He was the best.

Enjoyed that. He'd left for Spurs while I was a toddler so never saw him play for us. Looking back now you can understand why Bruce gave some of the flatcaps palpitations ;D

Nice one Hinesy. I hope the remaining 24 are as good as this one.

Like yourself, I would have played in goal when I was young. Not due to my outfield abilities though, just due to starting to smoke and not being fit enough for outfield. I was a big fan of Grob, and probably moreso James due to my age. Not old enough to have seen Clem play, but from videos / dvds / reading, I'd probably put him in my all time XI. I was aware of the season we conceded only 16 goals, but didnt know only 4 were at Anfield. Would that have been a 42 game season? Meaning we kept at least 17 clean sheets at home? Astonishing that.

Loved the story about Shanks trying to motivate Ray by claiming that Bobby Moore had been out on the town the day before, West Ham were due to play Liverpool, when he first came into the team.

Ray was a great professional, and a brilliant keeper. I remember being quite stunned when he left to go to Tottenham, one of the best keepers I ever saw.

Elisha Scott was such a personality too, I would love to read a book on him, became he seems such a unique person, as well as a great player. Imagine today Liverpool allowing a player to address the crowd, after their last club performance, amazing. I hope that book gets written one day.  It saddens me that a player with the number of performances he had, is so little known.

Nice piece that mate. I've just come back from Hamburg - I saw them play Schalke on Tuesday – and I was talking to some of the HSV lads about how I felt when Keegan left us to join them. I was choked, but losing Clemence to Spurs was even worse.

I always felt with Keegan that he was the first football superstar since Best, and he wanted to 'better' himself by playing on the continent, but when Clemence left I just couldn't see any sense in it. It was almost like something had gone wrong at the club, and I found it really unsettling. It hadn't, of course, but he was such a rock, and I never really took to Grobbelaar in the way others did. Not Bruce's fault, he just wasn't Clemence.

He was dominating without being a bully, and he was brilliant but fallible. Shilton seemed a bit more demonic, slightly possessed, and aloof – not really connected to the fans standing behind him. Clemence was a keeper you wanted to reach out and touch.

Yeah funny I suppose people always go on about Maradonna, Best etc being able to play the modern game but always forget the keepers. Think I might have to dig out some old clips tomorrow and watch with my own eyes.

I love how that thing of wanting your own favorite player doesn't change from generation to generation!

His concentration was excellent (that mistake against Scotland aside), 90 minutes of not seeing the ball and a finger tip save in the dying moments to give us the win -  his agility superb - and his consistency outstanding - I can't remember a spell or a season when you thought - he was having a bad time - possibly he did but I can't remember it - understated and dependable -

the back pass rule makes it hard to compare I guess, with his footwork not really used to the same extent as today and the sheer size of the buggers these days is another issue  but he could read the game well and was off his line like lightning - he'd be my favourite keeper and superior to Shilton in most respects for me. Reina has to be at his best to give the same sense of security that Clem provided.

Go along with all that V.

Also he was never bullied like Pepe sometimes is. Even though he wasn't as muscled as Pepe, Clem wasstill a wiry super middleweight and opponents tended to stay clear most of the time or risk a knee in the guts or a boot in the goolies. The opposing forwards invariably came off worse in any confrontation.

For me only Banks was better. I rate Clem with Schmeichal and Jennings as next best. Shilton next and then possibly big Nev.

Good stuff, and dead right. I've loved loads of our keepers, but Clemence was best of them all. The first sweeper keeper. But, I was talking to Hinsey earlier, and I told him that I reckon he's right because football is all about feelings. When they're moaning about us getting beat, people, (I have to be honest, mainly kids), always tell me that old cracker, "LFC exists only to win trophies." They use it to justify every whinge, and say it like gospel, because they think Shankly said it. It was David Moores. But as Shankly said, it's much more important than that.

Oh well, just the way it is today, I suppose. Frightening to think that Clemence arrived in 69. I wouldn't have long graduated from the pen, to the wall behind him. I love Pepe Reina, and Jerzy will always have a special place with me, but nothing like seeing Ray Clemence, horizontal, yards off the deck, full stretch, plucking one out the air, with all your mates around you. Mind you, I bet Kenny still gives him some gyp for the ooops, where's it gone, nutmeg, through the knees. Bit naughty this, but... remember that film with Dennis Hopper, "You do a million women, but you suck just one cock and..." Sorry for the crudity, but that's it in a nutshell. But I remember Ray Clemence for far more than that one rick. Fantastic player, that brings back loads of all the good memories. Peter Shilton... Pah.
