With all due respect to Rafa (and as the first great manager in my time supporting Liverpool, I respect few people more), the top end of the game has somewhat moved on from his time with us. That's why I wouldn't want him to ever come back to manage us - I would rather preserve the good memories of him rather than take a step back. And that's without accounting for the fact that I never want Klopp to leave.

I don't see the problem with people talking about him though. He is a legend of the club and holds a very special place for supporters of my generation, and I think that should be respected. I don't see anyone having an issue with talking about Kenny, for example, but people are oddly sensitive about Rafa, perhaps because he never quite had the same unanimous love and support Klopp or Kenny do, and put a few people offside.

I loved Rafa to bits and was incredibly vocal when he was shafted at the start of this decade. The thing is I don't get the continuing obsession. A class manger and a wonderful human being but I think we should stop looking backwards and enjoy the moment.

As managers go we should thank our lucky stars we have Klopp, look at the present and the future and let Rafa get on with is career.

I tend to agree with this. I loved Rafa at the time - and sacking him to replace him with Hodgson has got to be one of the biggest and most stupid mistakes the club has ever made.

Much as I love him though; I love Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Kenny and Klopp even more, which makes him my 6th favourite manager. I wish Rafa well and have massive gratitude for all the fckin brilliant times he gave us but he doesn't manage Liverpool anymore, so I can't say I'm overly bothered about how well/badly he does managing other clubs. I wouldn't swap our current manager for Rafa or any other manager currently in the game.

He won the Champions League at our club that makes legend here. I think its perfectly appropriate for legends to have pages on the main board.

Rafa doesn't get anywhere near enough credit for calling out the cancers publicly. Other managers would have kept their mouths shut, he put his neck on the chopping board. Forever indebted to him.

Rafa's great, Kloppo's even greater, it's all good  ;D Love 'em both, and you know what is the best thing - they aren't just great managers, they are great men, just two wonderful, empathetic, egoless, loyal human beings.

So as this is a picture thread, here's a couple pics. And featuring both of them so somone doesn't get too huffy  ;)

Yep, and you just know that Rafa will have been watching the CL final, loving every minute of it. He's one of us forever.

Just reading Rafa's book, Champions League Dreams. His attention to detail is amazing, he notices things on the football field I wouldn't even see if pointed out 10 times to me  ;D such a brilliant tactical mind.

He's still my favourite Liverpool manager, I think he always will be, because he (and Houllier, to a lesser extent) was the manager when I first really passionately began to follow football, he took us to some incredible heights, and just generally football seemed better back then, which everyone probably thinks about football during their childhood.

Doubt he'll ever come back, not sure I'd even want him to, I'm not sure managers going back is ever much of a good idea, but will always love Rafa.

Quote from: Kalidou Koulibaly
After my medical, Rafa took me out to lunch, and the first thing he did after we sat down, before we even got the menus, he took all the wine glasses from the other tables. He was laying them out on the table and sliding them around. I am thinking, What is he doing? Is he mad?

He said, “O.K., now I show you the tactics.”

The waiter comes over, and the Mister is pushing the glasses everywhere, saying, “This is how we play. You go here, then you go there. Do you understand? Now, you must do two things very quickly: You must understand these tactics, and you must learn Italian.”

I said, “O.K., boss, O.K.”

When I returned from a little vacation, Rafa shut me in a room with the head of video analysis, and he was showing me all of my best plays. Sensational passes, dribbling, sliding tackles.

He says, “This, this and this?”

I say, “Yes? It’s good, no?”

He says, “Don’t do this shit anymore.”

I say, “But I won the ball back!”

It’s hard to translate the next part, but he says, “This is ass! You won it back because of your strength. If your opponent was smarter, you would be in trouble.”

Then he shows me this other video. Very boring. Normal plays.

He’s smiling and he says, “Yes! This is good. This is very good.”

I say, “But, sir, these are simple plays.”

He says, “Yes, Kouli, exactly.”

This says everything about my experience here. When I arrived in Italy, I was a boy. I became a better footballer, because I learned top-level tactics. They are so meticulous with the tactics here. But the most important thing is that I also became a family man and a real Neapolitan.

This and the CL as well, should be beyond criticism, in terms of his time with us, ever.

He stayed. Many would have quit.

I have no problem with this being on the main board. It's the off season and he is without a club. It will soon gather moss again.

I don't think it is disrespectful to Klopp or counterproductive.

I think you and me might be around the same age.

I started looking football differently because of rafa. First memories were of Rafa's Valencia totally dominating Liverpool. I look at that game and realize that the valencia team that we are facing is so utterly in control that it is ridiculous. Totally loved it when Rafa signed for us. And this was pre internet and all the stats and football science stuff. Rafa was truly ahead of the time.

But what makes him even more of a legend wasn't what he does on the pitch but more off it. He was instrumental in getting rid of the cancers. Not many managers have the humanity and courage to do that. He knew what the cancers were doing and the rest is thanks to internet terrorists.

Don't know where all this disrespectful talk is coming from. All our managers deserve some sort of respect or another except one.

Very much this. 100% mate.

Rafa is a true legend, an inspiration.
The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest — but the myth — persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.

Rafa doesn't get anywhere near enough credit for calling out the cancers publicly. Other managers would have kept their mouths shut, he put his neck on the chopping board. Forever indebted to him.

Echo this. Time flies by and I feel like the whole G&H debacle is getting forgotten. The success under Klopp helps of course and that's no bad thing. But it's while ago now and I just wonder how many young fans understand just how desperate those times were. Rafa pretty much fell on his sword for us. Love the bones of him.
I think the same, can't stand him, but if you could have a £1million pound cheque or steve bruces head hollowed out and filled with pound coins which would you have?

It's really sad, how logical and simple everything Rafa says is. I think we could all see at the time, what he's doing, but he still got thrown all the shite about being a defensive manager or only playing one striker at him by pundits and "experts". It's also clear why he liked, signed and played the players he did even when they weren't big name or fancy players. It's great to hear Rafa explain all this, but if you were following Liverpool when he was our manager it's not really anything new. We could all kind of see it, but he never got the credit he deserved from people with no connection to the club.

Love this man. An absolute beacon of light through some dark days.

He was the victim of some rotten timing and I firmly believe that with the right ownership and backing he'd have won multiple league titles with Liverpool.

Deserves his face on the flag for 2005 alone, but by going public on the Gillet and Hicks he fell on his sword for the club and achieved legend status off the pitch. It's not talked about much these days, but he did his part to save the club. Every now and again I see the black shirt in my footy shirt drawer and go back to those dark days. But mostly I feel amazed at what we were all capable of doing, and Rafa played a massive part.

It really makes me sad that we didn't get the second CL win or the league title for him, because his overall reputation would probably be closer to that what it should it be. He worked some magic with our team when he was here, but he was just too restriced by us having very little and then (in the end) no money. Had we been bought by decent people like FSG seem to be instead of Gillett and Hicks he would have won at least one league title for us in my view. But when we finally had a good team things fell apart when he wasn't allowed to spend any money even if he made it himself by selling a player like Alonso.

I also think that Klopp and Rafa are quite similar even though there clearly are differences like their relationship with the players or their overall personality (Klopp being more of an open crazy guy and Rafa coming across as more of a relaxed kind of reserved guy). Still, they both had and have a clear way of how they want to play. They also tried and managed to make the players every day (even though they try to get there in a different way). But most importantly they both just get the club and managed to form a special bond with the supporters. Again, both in their own style, but the result was basically the same. Still have loads of love for Rafa and I wish him nothing but luck for the rest of his life for giving me some of the greatest times in my life. I really hope that once he quits managing, we can get him involved in the club again. Not in terms of him being involved with running the first team, but more like a representative like Kenny.

loved how his valencia side played our houllier side eons ago. everything about  his team is well drilled that i remember being suffocated and hardly had time on the ball

wonder how rafa would actually fare if he is in charge of our side now. Still love for him to coach a top side but his career choices like everton and a stint in china seems weird.

Yeah I was at that game and was amazed at how good they were and how they made us look really poor tactically AND individually.

I think that was the first time I'd ever really seen a concerted press. Not so much like we do now, but a sort of more relaxed press all over the pitch - for the whole game.

In our earlier play under Jurgen I think our press was just manic pressing of the ball all over the pitch for the whole game (until we couldnt anymore). Now weve evolved into a triggered press that we turn on as and when we want to. Deffo not something as mad as our first season.

Rafa's was a different kind of press I think. Not so much an "in your face" press, more of his "owning the space" type of press.  I think we have a more aggressive press now, that when bypassed quickly can leave us exposed (benefits of having VVD etc), whereas Rafas was more of a whole team press, I dunno, just sort of gliding round the pitch like one big cell.
All the badge kissing in the world don't make up for the fact that they are, frankly, not Liverpool Football Club. It's not their fault. Its just how it is.

Rafa's entire playing style, on attack, while defending, and in both transitions, could be said to be focused on owning or controlling space...

So happy I got to support us through both Rafa and Kloppo's reigns

wonder how rafa would actually fare if he is in charge of our side now. Still love for him to coach a top side but his career choices like everton and a stint in china seems weird.

I think he should just call it quits with the whole manager thing. Get a job as a pundit, consultant or some other role at a football club. With the way his career has gone since he left us, I don't think there are any decent jobs for him left (and also quite limited options, if he doesn't want to move). I can see why he did what he did in terms of club choice as a manager, because I thought the choices made sense for him. It's not helping that the clubs were all a mess and there wasn't really a long-term perspective. The problem I see is that he loves football and he still seems to love working as a manager. Whatever he does, I hope he does well and is happy with what he's doing, because I just love the man...

'Siempre Es Posible' remains one of my favourite Liverpool banners ever. The simplicity of it combined with the message makes it something else.
Mark my words. Top 8 will be a massive struggle.
We won't make any big signings this season and we will go back to being a top4 club.

loved how his valencia side played our houllier side eons ago. everything about  his team is well drilled that i remember being suffocated and hardly had time on the ball

Oh aye, thoroughly enjoyable night :D
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Does it come from a Rafa comment, or just an inspired supporter at the time?
