From the Godfather , Mean Streets through Good fellas to  Sopranos the US has romanticised the mafia....whereas this more honest Italian TV makes it look , bloody , unforgiving and a wholly undersirable life style, yet still absorbing TV....Brilliant and scary....Film was bloody good , this TV series is much better.

Whilst it would be great to see another series , the temptation will  be to soften it to a larger (US?) audience....I hope not.

The shot of the 'Villa' in amongst the hell of the tower blocks says it all....these people had achieved so much wealth and power yet cant escape who they are....any one with common sense would fuck off to London who welcome the worlds criminals as long as they're wealthy.

Just binged on this over the weekend, awesome!

Think I'll check out the movie now, any of you guys see it?

Yup - the movie is good.

Different characters & story line - but likewise, set in Naples.

On episode 9. Absolutely loving this.

Don't want to read the thread in case there are spoilers, but has it been noted just how much Ciro looks like Pep Guardiola?

Oh and that new Mayor Genarro got elected is a dead ringer for our Aquilani!

Sorry mate, but that is a complete misreading of the genre. The gangsters always get their comeuppance - no one gets out alive. From the early days of film noir through "The Departed" and "Boardwalk Empire," it's always been the same.

That is indeed a recurring theme in American tv and movies...is it representitive of the same mindset that has millions of Americans believing in a higher power...God?

A puritanical mindset?

The end to the Muni film I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang always makes me think that justice in America is more about punishment than rehabilitation...never better represented than in this film...the ending is still harrowing all these years later.

Not at all mate, but while that puritanical shite is present in countless places in American life and entertainment, it is notably absent in film noir. It's one of the reasons it was so popular, I think, because it took the John Wayne/Gary Cooper ideal and stripped it of its moral center. It titillated the milquetoast masses who had come out of the Great Depression and World War 2 into affluence, comfort, disposable income, etc. One could argue that these characters fail not because of their immorality, but because of the bleakness of the universe. The gangster genre is much the same, with a lot of overlap with film noir obviously. The gangster's demise is less because of his absence of ethics, maybe, and more about the poor choices he makes (though obviously ethics and morality comes into it as well). Nevertheless, they aren't romanticized.

I don't know, that's just off the top of my head. I'm rarely correct really  :P

Finished this. Although I really enjoyed each episode I found it really hard to get going with the first few. Just seemed very intense so watched probably one every 1-2 weeks. Maybe it was the subtitles - means you can't really switch off or look elsewhere because you're scared of missing something important. Intensifies the whole thing.

Spoiler
But have just rattled through the last 6 episodes and my oh my oh my. Exceptional finale. Although you could see some of the twists coming (in hindsight) it was one of the best season finales I think i've ever seen. Loved it.

bit late in responding  , but no I didn't misread the genre...and I cant quite figure out why you would even think so!... 'bloody , unforgiving and a wholly undersirable life style'.....the American image is an enticing backdrop lifestyle.... 'but the law gets their man'.... now there's romanticism !!!....whereas who in the right mind would find the this way of living 'sexy'..it is a brutal life ..and more honest portrayal for it.

Film is very good. The book by Roberto Saviano is well worth a read too.

Think..The Wire crossed with House Of Games and The Sopranos...The story follows a police investigator of the Mani Pulite pool; a young veteran of the first Gulf War elected to Parliament with the Lega Nord; a former prostitute who uses not only her beauty to achieve her personal goals; a highly ambitious advertising agent with a mysterious past; and the orphaned adult daughter of a rich entrepreneur overthrown by the Mani Puilte scandal. I've been enjoying it.

Multiple storylines and done by the same company that did Gomorrah

I meant to post about this when it started..but,I watched one then then had to wait a week for the other so I decided to wait a bit longer so I could binge a few ep's at once....and forgot to post about it. :D

Sorry for the delay...I think everyone will really like it...imo it's better than Gomorrah...a lot more depth due to all the different storylines and it help's that it's based on actual events.

That's the date of the premiere-Tuesday 24 March.
Don't let anyone tell you all those away trips to Italy weren't for nothing Dave ;)

Just looked and catch up only starts at episode 4, gutted. Is it easy to just jump in afternoon 3 episodes?

A film y'all might like is Anime Nere/Black Souls.

A story of three brothers, the sons of a shepherd, close to the Ndrangheta and of their divided soul...made by Francesco Munzi a fine director..I think so anyway...it's basically a film of revenge and age old vendetta....it's well written, acted and directed...it's also beautifully shot.

What's it called? 1992? Or Martedi 24 marzo?
That's the date of the premiere-Tuesday 24 March.

haha - fuckin'ell Craig you got off lightly with that one mate I feel :)

Anyhow, 1992 looks good Dave, cheers for the heads up.  While looking at the synopsis of '1992' on IMDB, it also suggested I watch 'Romanzo Criminale'

Romanzo Criminale scores an impressive 8.7 on IMDB and runs across 2 seasons. I like the look of this and I'm going to give it a go, the plot synopsis is below.  Has anyone here seen this, and is it worth the 8.7 rating?

A criminal known as Lebanese has a dream: to conquer the underworld of Rome. To carry out this feat without precedent he puts together a ruthless and highly organized gang. Their progress and changes in leadership (Lebanese is followed by his cohorts Freddo and Dandi) take place over twenty-five years, from the 1970's into the '90's, and are inseparably intertwined with the dark history of modern Italy: terrorism, kidnappings and corruption at the highest levels of government. Throughout these years Police Lieutenant Scialoia sticks to the gang's trail, trying both to bring them to justice and to win the heart of Dandi's girlfriend Patrizia.

Giving it a download now, Pete. If it's even half as good as Gomorrah I'm sure I'll love it.
