Right well i fancy having a listen to some easy listening, relaxing jazz songs to download buy but don't have a clue where to start. Anyone have any advice on what songs/what artists etc would be best?

Thanks in advance

Any of the Chet Baker Sings albums. Fantastic voice.

Love Jazz, ended up calling my dogs, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington which gives you a bit of a clue to my passion I suppose; it is one of my main obsessions in life.

Can't disagree with the pointers towards Miles Davis, but surprised there hasn't been much mention of Charlie Parker. Not all of his stuff was bebop and even most of that stuff is bloody amazing. If you are looking for collections to get you started on a player, then it is worth looking for the Ken Burns collections; he also did a superb history of Jazz, which was one of the greatest documentaries ever made....although a bit too much Wynton Marsalis for my liking.  :)

Can I suggest the absolutely brilliant Dexter Gordon - pretty much anything he did to be honest.

'Go' is a superb album, right from the first 30 seconds of the opener 'Cheesecake' you know what you are in for - glorious!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzcl454jdhI&list=PLF2E1AC12D0827B26

Another cracker by the man is 'Our man in Paris' - Like a lot of the Jazz players, they liked coming to Europe as they were treated like the amazing artists they were rather than back home where they still weren't allowed to stay in some of the hotels they played.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZDG9h2UnW0

Another name worth looking out for is Wayne Shorter

'Speak no Evil' is amazing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXRnGECb9Rs

For some of the newer N'orlins stuff, try

Soul Rebels Brass Band - 'Unlock your mind'  - They were brilliant in Manchester last year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-FhPspl0kU&list=PL41FE8BB97A3A92D4

and the Hot Eight Brass Band - awesome at Eric's last year too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsyK9_iaCoA&list=PLYTZpM1KcSh17Y9dN6v9csTCqoL3bLpG9

For some new Nordic Jazz, have a listen to Mathias Eick - Either 'SKala' or 'The Door'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuLXLB80Qls

ENJOY!

A quick heads up to a special 3 hour broadcast celebrating Sun Ra's centennial (he would be 100 years old and a bit), unquestionably Planet Saturn's greatest ever musician. Brian Turner's show on WFMU starts at 8pm GMT tomorrow night (http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/BT). All shows get archived, so listen at leisure.

Also: Travelling the Spaceways: The Cult of Sun Ra http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b046nvxs (Radio4 iplayer)

Article from the Guardian about it: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jun/15/sun-ra-jazz-interstellar-voyager

and 3 hours from Gilles Peterson http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b047kzh9 (ends soon i think)

Quote
Gilles celebrates the iconic bandleader and composer Sun Ra, with some live tracks recorded especially for the BBC.

Sun Ra would have been 100 years old this May. He had a hugely prolific career and was seen as one of the most controversial jazz musicians of all time. His cosmic philosophies and eclectic style made him a pioneer of Afrofuterism and his music and philosophies still continue to influence a whole raft of today's musicians.

From the mid-1950s to his death in 1993, Sun Ra led The Arkestra; an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up where certain core members remained with the group through its various incarnations. The Arkestra is now under the directorship of 90 year-old Marshall Allen.

As part of a collection of programmes across the BBC celebrating Sun Ra, Gilles dedicates an hour to some of his favourite Sun Ra choices and artists who were influenced by the great man. There is also the opportunity to hear a couple of live tracks, which were recorded especially for the BBC by his influential collective, The Arkestra. You will be able to hear the full live session on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on 3 on 30th June.

The Sun Ra Arkestra are at Cafe Oto, London E8, 16, 17, 25, 26 June; and at Glastonbury on 27 June.

Happy Birthday Mr Ra.

Thoroughly enjoyable hour so far on brian turner's show... http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/56189. (ends 11pm tonight) Have been half listening to it as i've been unable to sit down properly until now. Reading stories to my 4 year old with this other wordly noise peeking out low from the speakers on my 32k modem! And then, up pops a plug for a children's book out the other month, called 'The Cosmobiography of Sun Ra: The Sound of Joy Is Enlightening '

Jazz musician Sun Ra (1914–1993) always said that he came from Saturn. Being from another planet, he was naturally intrigued by everything earthly — especially music, because music is the one thing on Earth most like the stars. Earthlings themselves confused Sun Ra, the way they sorted themselves by color and fought wars against one another. So he made music. And he traveled with other musicians and singers, calling themselves the Sun Ra Arkestra, playing, singing, and dancing for people all over the planet. Because music, he said, is what holds us all together. Join acclaimed author-illustrator Chris Raschka in celebrating a legend of the jazz world who was truly one of a kind.

I've only got one track of his on iTunes at the moment, called 'Ruby, My Dear', it's quite brilliant, if anyone knows of similar stuff of his I'd be much obliged.

I knew you'd enjoy it mate..you've got a discerning ear.

It's his best LP I feel. The complexity of the playing is so difficult to master..yet it's managed..just.

The first track on the LP was that difficult that the band weren't able to complete it in a single take,it had to be pieced together by the engineer from multiple takes.

It's one of those must have jazz LP's.

Lee Morgan's playing on that track is really good...iirc, he was still a teenager when he recorded that with Blakey.

I always think I am only getting a brush of the feeling that Train is providing in his music, powerful stuff.

Also, I am partial to Monk's "Straight, No Chaser." Partially because it is an class but and partially because the missus adores it.
I watched a YouTube video and decided that Paul Konchesky looked like a player.

I had "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock on the other night, sublime.

This is what I posted above in reply to Sam...such a difficult piece to follow...nevermind play...for me...Monk's finest piece.

Thanks for re-posting that Dave, I had been in here the other day and saw the link was dead and I was racking my brains trying to remember which LP it was...now I know...did listen to Straight, No Chaser while searching on YouTube trying to find out which Monk piece it was. All good ;D

Also, regarding A Love Supreme, it is probably the first jazz I really listened to, remember a mate getting me to listen to it in his flat on Falkner Square. He's moved to Japan now, I miss that guy, he always made everyone have a shot of absinthe (with all the sugar and spoon and 'ritual' stuff) soon after going in to his gaff. He was dead into Japanese stuff and all his bookcases were sideways, everything very low level. He used to write brilliant abstract sci-fi novels set in post-Apocalyptic Liverpool. And he had some great taste in music. It's such a great sound. I've got a live performance of the whole album somewhere on my computer, the file doesn't have any details about where it was recorded, but it's 48 very nice minutes.
get thee to the library before the c*nts close it down

Never seen any love on the site for these...other than mine....a cool sound.

Posted this in the funk/soul thread yesterday for some reason, not sure how I did that:

Came on to chat shit about Sterling, but it's all locked, so thought I'd say hello and chat shit about jazz. Been eating it up recently. Don't have the Internet connection to allow me to casually explore links suggested above, but one day I'll be back to normal. Just wanted to share my current love for John Coltrane's Village Vanguard Recordings from 1969. Working out how to link it would take me an age,but well worth a listen. Am sure you'll either know it, or know how to listen to it . Magical.

On a slightly different angle, Byron Morris and Unity's 'Vibrations in Time' is going down well again. A sound that takes me back. Don't know if they're  well known or not. One of their tunes was on a cracking compilation album called Universal Sounds of America. The comedowns I enjoyed listening to that  album were numerous to the point of ritual.

...............

..and now that I am not on a mobile, I can work out how to link something:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/5yIYo0qgBfU?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/5yIYo0qgBfU?fs=1</a>

and some Coltrane with Mr Davis:

... on a very different bent, been listening to much of what Mats Gustafsson gets up to with his numerous projects - his Fire! Orchestra are pretty wonderful, as is his stuff with Thurston Moore.

About 3 seconds of Japanese thrash jazz (I made that up). God I love the Ruins. Not for everyone granted.

Some Mingus at the piano tho...

Love this album. Been a relative constant of mine recently. My mum, god love her, remarked, 'Who is this godawful* piano player?' one afternoon while I was cooking the roast. I'm a big piano fan tho.

I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

Really like The Thing as posted by Filler above

Also worth checking out anything Paal Nilssen-Love is up to. He's a great drummer and seems to have a million projects on the go at any one time.

I could link a single song from youtube, but it's worth checking in full if you can - beginning to end. Some albums just work like that. It's jazz, it's funk, it's soul, it's free mash noise, it's lounge.... an absolute peach. Got it from a great interview with a 'favourite' of mine, Mats Gustafsson, in the http://thevinylfactory.com/ It's about his record collection, and it weighs 2 and a half tonnes. He doesn't do numbers.

picture of it here... https://db9gj0e1kg167.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Cover_MatsCollection_ByZigaKoritnik2016_30-copy.jpg

Album is based on a children's TV programme from the late 50's in the States. It's like Sesame Street meets Albert Ayler. Best LP I've heard this year. Near 50 years later.
