I'll be honest, when we signed Ox I thought that he was a fairly decent player but was fairly non-plussed, especially given the fee as I thought that there were better options at the time.  Shockingly, Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards appear to know more about football than I do.  I really think that his dynamism is an essential option within the squad and that he is a 'different option' in terms of his style of play to anybody else that we have.  As mentioned by other posters, his ability to hit a shot from range is another real asset and adds yet another 'string to our bow' in an attacking sense.  Aside from that, he seems like a very nice, intelligent lad off the pitch, which can only add to the camaraderie which this team seems to have.

Going to be very interesting to see whether it's him or Fabinho (assuming Henderson and Wijnaldum are immovable for the moment, based on Klopp's history) for the Atletico games. Will be very harsh on whoever doesn't start.

Will be Fabinho without a shadow of a doubt but Ox does give us something different to many of our midfielders. Thought his overall game was up a notch to that at West Ham and he’ll Likely get better with every match now. Delighted for him after his injury troubles

A remarkable player, and unusual in so many ways. Looks more like a rugby player than a footballer, always looks battle scarred and case hardened, but talks like a toff - considered, courteous and super-articulate. Loves to drive forward with the ball; hits a straight and true longshot; fearless despite a recent injury history which would leave lesser players nervous of engagement. Seems to have been around for ever and yet still fairly young. More openly and demonstrably self-critical than most superstar players, but super-supportive of his team mates.

A gem of a player; if he could command a regular midfield berth he could become a great. You feel there's so much more to come from him, as if he's still not quite fully formed: a fledgling eaglet just trying out its wings and its claws before it begins to soar

He comes over as a very intelligent and articulate young man, to the point where he might not be able to get a job in broadcast media because he's neither controversial enough nor thick enough. I could imagine him writing for one of the better papers, if they still exist, when he retires.

I'm amazed he's playing at this level after that injury.

Someone on Rawk posted a well detailed article last season on his injury and operation and I seriously doubted he would come back half the player he was before.

Simply unbelievable, credit to Ox working hard last season to get back and also the medical team who oversaw his rehabilitation.

Felt that he was a bit lost in that front 3 role and didn't really know what to do with himself and how to use the runs of Robertson.

Granted that he didn't play in that role often and was just a stop gap. I think it was just an intention to get him some game time and he would be back to the middle again.

He's never really impressed for us in the front 3 set up. I think he's great when he's driving from the middle, but he's just not a winger or inside forward. You could always see at Arsenal Wenger was using him wrong, when we was barely scoring any for them.

Problem he's having this season, since he came back from the long term injury, is that he's either brilliant or poor, tonight was the latter

He plays too deep when he's wide and his instinct isn't to run at the fullback. I think he's far more useful in the middle next to Keita or Gini or Hendo wherein he can drive through the middle.

Nope. This is completely wrong. Keita was involved all game, was making runs, was driving the ball, and was looking to get some through balls in.

Think you're forgetting the two changes Klopp made in Mane/Ox and Fab/Gini allowed Jordan the opportunity to pass to Mane for the winner. Keita only got swapped due to his booking.

I do feel for him when he's put out wide. He's been saying for years that he's a midfielder, not a winger. His performances are markedly worse when he's in the front 3.

Keita was immense today. A constant threat. Ox, less so. I always feel like we're a player light when he plays but as has been said he's not comfortable in that left-forward position...

We know he's not good as one of the front 3, there's no point criticising him. He's being played out of position and he does a job for us. Doesn't complain. Fair play to him.

Agreed. He's not Mané, but apart from Mané himself, who is? Any replacement is going to look ordinary by comparison.

I feel bad when I see him out wide. But I also think he could offer far more cutting in from the left than he does. I know he doesn't want to play there but he does have pace and he's pretty strong with a lethal strike on him. But he's definitely played his best football for us from midfield.

As for the drop in quality when he came on, Salah and Mane are two of the best players in the world. We could bring on every other team in the league's first choice attackers (bar City) and it would be a noticeable drop in quality.

I think that he hasn't been as influential as he was in 17/18, but it would be harsh to expect him to be. He is sometimes tasked with doing stuff that he's left effective in. I see Ox as a player who is great in driving with the ball in central areas, and when he plays out wide it is harder for him to do so. He isn't an amazing crosser or the sort of lethal forward Mane and Salah are, nor is he a creative passer in the level of Coutinho, so I don't think he can contribute as much playing there.

That being said, I am surprised that remained very combative, which is hard for players who have gone through an extensive injury. I also think he kept his speed and press-resistance which is great. Obviously he developed a knack for scoring which I heard is important in football. So there's a lot to be positive about and I think this is what this season was all about. Seems like AOC has been around forever, but he's still quite young - Henderson and Wij are older than he is - and the way Naby is developing I can see a Fabinho/Keita/Oxlade-Chamberlain midfield been effective in the future, even if not as our "go-to" midfield.

He’s genuinely lucky to be playing sport again let alone at this level.  It was a really really really bad injury.

He’s playing no worse than he was in his first 3 or 4 months for us...

Yet to see quite the peaks we did but his level isn’t bad at all.

I think given the injuries he has had whilst being here he's done very, very well. Think he'll start in the middle tomorrow, has had good performances v West Ham over the years so hopefully he continues that as too, love to see him drive forward with the ball and attack their midfielders and defenders, especially against a team like West Ham who won't come at us at all.

Could get a good run of games too with a good performance tomorrow night!

He's been good. Still a really good goal threat for a central midfielder which is something we need. We're more controlled and less frantic than when he was at his best for us two years ago. So i don't think he suits us as much as he did back then.

he looks much more comfortable and productive when he is on the right of a midfield 3, instead of on the left of a front 3.  The midfield position allows him to drive forwards with the ball and get into shooting positions.  Always looks ineffective when he plays in the Mane position

When Henderson is not playing, we need Ox’s energy to replace him! A Keita, Fab, Win midfield is very good technically but lacks a bit of energy to drive the team forward. Ox speed up the game with his running and carrying the ball forward, opening up more spaces for the front 3!
