Maldini retired age 40, so looking at this, VVD is just at the beginning.

His reading of patterns and positioning is world class and will only improve. His acceleration will be the first to go, but it’s usually the last thing he needs.

I’d say at least 4 at this level with how fit the players are these days, after that it’s anyones guess, personally I’m hopeful he’ll be still smashing it at 35 easy. Maldini was 37 when he won the CL as captain so no reason why VVD can’t do the same.

I know all the talk of "luck" being entirely on our side is vastly overblown. 99% of what has been accomplished is solely due to skill both on and off the field. Except for VVD. Spending 75 millions pounds is nothing compared to the monumental figure we received. Many teams spend big on CB's very few have a player of such quality available when they do so. Easily the best CB since Nesta. Arguably even better than Nesta. You may have to go back to Baresi to find one clearly better.

We are a very lucky fanbase to watch and cheer for him in his prime.

He's so good, he should get at least a 92 rating in FIFA 21.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

If you made a defender in a lab you would end up with VVD.

Height. Speed. Poise. Aerial ability. Passing ability. Anticipation. Will to win. Influence.

He has no weaknesses.

You might say he should score more but goalscoring defenders who don't take pens are a myth really, and in any case he has been our 4th top scorer and only 4 behind 3rd (Firmino) in our unbeaten year

There was one break last night where he had two players coming at him, virtually no help nearby and with one cool swoop he took the ball and set up a counter attack. Brilliant.

Think this is the tackle I came in here to mention, just a casual bend at the knee, didn't even need to go to ground completely, and the ball is swept away. I just stood there laughing to be honest!

That was absolutely immense.
Has all the timing, positioning and passing of a late career Maldini.
But with vastly more pace, and he's miles, miles better in the air and in terms of sheer physicality than Maldini was at any time. Same goes with respect to Baresi - Van Dijk's a match for his extraordinary positioning, like Baresi he also organises the best offside trap in world football (only does so at a time when that's more difficult to do) but, again, in every physical attribute bar pace he utterly destroys even a peak Baresi.

Van Dijk is the best there's ever been - I'll say it before and I'll say it again, he matches (or very close to) the best of the best at their best attributes, then destroys them elsewhere. Take another example like, say, Hyppia - there's never been better in the air. Van Dijk matches him in the air and in terms of positioning but is massively better on the ball and in terms of pace it isn't even a contest.
If you made a defender in a lab you would end up with VVD.

Height. Speed. Poise. Aerial ability. Passing ability. Anticipation. Will to win. Influence.

He has no weaknesses.
This is true, but it doesn't really do him justice. Koulibaly has no weaknesses. Gomez arguably has no weaknesses. Van Dijk doesn't have any aspect of his game that doesn't measure up to the best CBs in history at that aspect of the game. He's as quick as the quickest, as good on the ball as the most skillful, as aerially dominant as the grockiest. It'll be a long, long time before we see his like again, he's the Messi of defenders and it's a travesty that he didn't win player of the year ahead of Messi.
He is the cat who walks by himself, and all roads are alike to him.

He really should have.  VVD had an almost perfect year, personally and teamwise.  And 97 points in his domestic league is nothing to frown at even though we didn't win the title.

Messi had, well just a standard Messi year.

It's a fan made concept of how a custom boot for him could look it, nothing official.

That tackle yesterday when Sheffield burst forward was sexy.

I think in the premier league era it is not a discussion.

Not old enough to talk about before then

I've been watching Liverpool for over 50 years and the only defender we've had that comes close is Alan Hansen, who was probably a bit better moving the ball out of defence, but otherwise, VVD has it all. So often he looks like an adult playing against children - the way he just takes the ball off forwards without even seeming to put any effort into it. Just amazing!

I just watched a compilation of our best goals of the decade. Some of the faces in the compilation, Kygriakos, Skrtel, Sakho, etc. and it dawned on me how good this guy is. I already knew, but it really put it in perspective. I have complete confidence in him even in situations where you probably shouldn't. He's incredible.

I mean, Kygriakos did what he was brought in to do, Skrtel was really good for a while, even Sakho till he started messing about.

That spell at the end where he made about 5 different clearances/challenges in about 60 seconds was hilarious. Carragher had said he clears everything just before it too, good timing!

He's the best centre back there's ever been, like a computer designed footballer. He should age brilliantly too, he'll obviously lose his pace at some point in his 30s but it's extremely rare he ever needs to use it so good is his reading of the game. Him and Alisson basically guarantee us a good defence for 5 plus years and should be brilliantly backed up by Trent, Joe and whoever else is here/signed.

Hilarious he cost less than Maguire. Impossible to even compare the two. Maguire's at best a poor mans John Terry, Van Dijk is Hansen, Hyypia and Ron Yeats rolled into one - albeit with a tad more pace.
