I agree with you on all three points. But I suspect you'll need to post this message a few more times before the season is through.

When fit he is one of the best CB’s in the league, it’s unfortunate that his injury record seems to get talked about more than his playing ability. Let’s hope that it’s just weeks and not months he’s out for.

He will be out for at least 2 - 6 weeks I would have thought.

Yep, didn’t VVD walk off against Everton and that put him out for the season.

If it’s a groin strain then it could be 4-6 weeks, hopefully get some news tomorrow on the length of injury.

Sad to see all his injury problems, Matip is an excellent player when fit. But he can't be relied long-term, he should be considered 4th choice CB when everyone is back. He can still play enough games and give VVD, Gomez and a "new player" a breather.

Great player unfortunately too injury prone should be a 4th choice if he’s happy with that.

I'm not even sure about that, to be honest. There is zero point in having a back up player who is always injured because inevitably when the time comes that you actually need them (because your first choice players are injured or need resting), inevitably they are not available. It's happened numerous times to us over the past few years not just this season, and it's why you cannot count on certain players as "depth".

Matip has missed over 65% of our games in the past season and a half either through injury or being unfit, and that statistic is unlikely to get better as he enters his 30s. Having him on the books means you can't have a (ideally consistently fit) lad in his place.

The CB position is a bit of an unknown at the moment, and difficult to plan for. Could be the case that both Gomez and VVD return in the summer like they were never away, and go back to starting 90% of games together which means a 4th choice CB for us can just be Fabinho, no issues. However maybe the injuries are worse than feared, or one suffers a set back, or one (or both) find themselves increasingly injury prone when they return as they try to compensate and recover from devastating knee injuries (see Ox). I mean take the names out of the equation, and if any other club were going into a season with a pool of CBs comprised of two players returning from long-term knee injuries, one player who is rarely fit and one new signing potentially new to the league, I daresay a lot on here would be labeling it daft.

Honestly I'd be looking to move on all the players in the squad who are fundamentally incapable of staying fit, even though that list includes some of my favourites. Klopp likes a small squad, and the football calendar isn't going to magically become less demanding - it's pretty imperative that the players you do have on the books are capable of actually getting on the pitch from time to time. Which is a shame, because Matip genuinely is one of the best CBs in the league.

I do rate this guy highly but I dunno how, with Sports Science as advanced as it is, he manages to keep getting injured. Is he made of paper mache? Surely lots warming up/ a rigorous stretching routine should be preventing or at least mitigating against these sorts of injuries?

Rugby Union/ League players play a far more attritional game and they’re not injured half as much as the average Footballer.

Fantastic defender, arguably our best centre back after Virgil, but there's only value in him as a squad player if we have 4 other options. Basically, he's a brilliant 5th CB wildcard to have, but should never be relied on more than that.

I've gotten it wrong before when I was very sceptical of the manager/club not acting to add to the squad (when they didn't replace Coutinho is a prime example), but I can't help feeling that if the club decide they don't need a CB in January, it's dereliction of duty and they really need their heads examined.

I don't think we will add a centre back next month and I will find it infuriating. We are a decent centre back from winning the league this year. Literally, one signing could near ensure back to back titles. It is also an investment in every player. We will lose a year from every player of the best team we have seen in 30 years if we don't back them.

Its not like we don't need one long term anyway. It would not be a signing for six months. The reality is that both Gomez and Matip would walk into any team, but both miss too many games in a position that is not tolerant to change.

Seemed to be struggling all throughout the move before he came off.

The bright side to the injury( and hopefully he is only out for a week or so) is that we are definitely going to get someone in Jan now. Not a 20-30 million signing but some veteran or you g guy Edward has scouted out. This injury should force our hand (or atleast logically speaking)

They're calling it an adductor injury, but looking at where he was holding it looked to me like a psoas (front hip flexor) injury - it wouldn't be surprising given his history of hamstring injury which can have knock on effects for the psoas. Either way (hip flexor or groin adductor), it is an injury associated with fatigue and overuse. For whatever reason, it seems like the poor lad's body needs more rest and recuperation than others.

Fully fit he's world class imo but we need to move on(in Jan if we can). His body just can't handle Klopp/EPL. He's not suddenly going to become more robust as he gets older. I'm sure somewhere less intense he could stay fitter for longer but it's not happening here.

Sorry, yes I see the point you're making.

Matip walked off for sure. It's no indication of anything except...the end of his Liverpool career. He may well be back by the middle of January, possibly by the middle of February. Either way, it's the end for him. He's brilliant, but utterly unreliable. When he's back he'll last a couple of games, play superbly, and then be gone again. A little knock here, a little strain there, sorry boss can't complete the game. Liverpool can't be doing with that anymore. In six months time Jurgen will have someone else surely. Then it will be Virgil, Joe and AN Other.

Personally I think it is a combination of an unusual frame and a low pain threshold. Years ago he would have been described as all arms and legs. The most resilient players tend to be compact, flexible and have a high pain threshold.

Jocky played on for several seasons combatting excruciating pain. He had a similar build to Joel Matip. His knees were shot to bits when he won his last league titles, playing every minute of every game.
