Sainsburys online wineshop is closing down so I managed to pick up a case of Duvel and a case of Leffe at half price, first time I'd tried Duvel and I just wish I'd picked up more thn 1 case now

Had some Duvel the other night. A sip was enough. Treacle, it was. Much too rich for my ignorant palate.

Thought it was a bit sweet when I had it and didn't get a chance to make up my mind- it had all gone before I could do so!

That's a decent beer, should serve you well for the season. Bit strong for me, I'm sticking to my Steininger, which is 4.0%. At my advanced age and parental status, I still like a drink but I can't be doing with hangovers.

Look at two things. Are there ingredients? Not "contains" but actual "this is what is in the fucking beer". Then pick your alcohol content. There's a difference between having six cans of 4.0% and six cans of 5.4%.

Went to one of those Christmas markets the Germans put on. Pint of beer (dunno what it was, but it was wheaty and German!) and a bratwurst in a roll, and a great little break.

I want to get some Hoegaarden; I really like wheat beer- very refreshing.

If you're a beer hunter, Belgium is outstanding. Mind you, I recently toured the USA and there are some cracking micro brewers over there that produce outstanding Ales, Stouts, Porters and Lager.

Back to Belgium though.....the range of beer styles is mind boggling and there is a place in Ghent i'd highly recommend. It's a bit touristy, but there are always plenty of locals too - the Waterhuis aan de Bierkant.  http://www.waterhuisaandebierkant.be/

It's a fantastic canal-side pub between Gravensteen and St. Bavo's. The beer menu is massive

Two of my albeit well known favs from my last jaunt there:

there is actually 2 ways to drink Rochefort,so say leave the sediment in the bottle others pour the beer then swill the bottle and pour the sediment in.

I leave the sediment in on the first pour to get a taste without the yeast, then swirl around and pour into the glass. Usually quite different flavour so like to compare. Classic beer that divides the punters is Adelaide's own Coopers Sparkling Ale. The default is to tilt the bottle so the ale goes cloudy.

Thinking about Ghent when I wrote that the other night so have booked a train there in Feb....... Love Belgium.....

That's not a bad drop the Fullers ESB too......I'm drinking a bottle of Meantime London Porter at the moment.

  • You'll see it when you believe it!
I live in Denmark where we apart from Carlsberg and Tuborg have numerous micro breweries that make very good beers. Actually Carlsberg themselves have a brand here called Jacobsen (named after the founder I. C. Jacobsen) and a brand named Semper Ardens (always burning in latin - from the way Jacobsen wanted the brewers dedication the their craft to be) which are good brands in terms of brewing interesting beers in smaller quantities.

Having said this I wil recommend these beers:

Duckstein (Germany)
Kozlak (Poland)
Staropramen - pilsner, dark and granat (Czech Rep.)
Budvar (Czech Rep.)
Christoffel Robertus (Holland)

... and for those of you who like smoky things i.e. Islay Single Malts - try an Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier.

Much prefer it out of a bottle - especially Stella.

Stella out of a can tastes so different than from a bottle.

Prefer cans because theres more in them and you dont have to keep going for more.

A glass is the obvious choice though.

Beer from a can tastes rank I reckon. Bottle is better, but off tap in a chilled glass is the only way to go.

Would rather a bottle than a can. Stella deffo tastes different out of a can.
