Really enjoyed watching that.. I know the competition was sub-par, but the fact that we beat them like we should beat sub-par teams is a far cry from where we were last season.

Borini, Suarez, and Gerrard all worked well together.  Thought Downing played better tonight than 95% of his matches last season.

Great football and great result.

Can't wait for opening fixture.

(oh and damn what a hit by Johno)  :o
Let's remember that as was said the whole of last week and since the first leg- Gomel are midwya through their season, so it's actually a good performance against a "small" team, which we'd usually struggle against and get a dodgy goal.

67% possession.
I refuse to believe that! That was easily 80% possession.

FSG accept offer, Agger refuses to leave. The former can fucking do one.

He won't do that though. If the club accept an offer, after it's been made clear Rodgers has control of transfers, yet Rodgers wants him to stay, then serious questions need asking.

Fucking joke.

First time I've been the match since my Dad moved away, which was fucking ages ago and I fucking loved it. Thought Borini, Downing and Johnson played great.

Also, I'll be fucking gutted if we lose Agger.

If the club accept an offer, after it's been made clear Rodgers has control of transfers, yet Rodgers wants him to stay...

We´ve been told that this won´t  happen...
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

I'd say 80% is the amount of time the ball was in the opposition half :P.  The pressing was very good, nice to see it and hope the team continues to show up against teams we know we should be beating.

Yip- the pressing was one of the best parts of tonight- intelligent, effective and relentless. Reminded me of our pressing under Rafa.
Good times! :)

Here's an idea: let us keep our best players, sign the cheques and keep your nose out of the football.

Sorted.

yeah. Like how they did last year ? Come on mate, nobody is going to sell anyone without Brendan's approval. It looks like they have already spent 25m (BR confirming fee agreed). If BR was asked to raise more cash by selling, that is fair enough for me. Also, we won a match by playing good football. Can we please talk more about the match rather than the owners just like in every other thread. Anyway, that was a boss first half. Lucas almost played full match. Suarez looking sharp. Gerrard played like old times. Getting excited for the season. :)

Fucking joke.

The manager said unequivocally yesterday that he's not forced to sell.

If he goes it's for a reason, we wanted to be run as a business, here it is.

No point in getting carried away as we'll face far better teams than Gomel. We can only play what's in front of us though, and Ii really enjoyed our peformance tonight. Suarez, Borini and Gerrard linked well, and it was good to see us pressing the opposition when we didn't have the ball instead of sitting deep and inviting pressure as we have done under recent managers.

Well done Stevie on 150th LFC goal. Here's to the next 150!

People say he threw his shirt into the crowd like Xabi did in his last game at Anfield. Depressing. I doubt FSG can sell Agger without BR's approval. I think BR is being pragmatic. He knows we love him, he loves us, he is quality, but he wants the money for new players, which is also understandable if you can be objective. If he is sold BR will know, he will lose section of the crowd (it could of course prove inspired, but I'd rather not think about that).

i love agger and i think he is a really top lad, but it wouldn't be a case of him being forced out to russia or something. do you really think it's impossible if a bid was accepted for him that he wouldn't refuse to go to the prem champions - down the road and probably on higher wages? i'm just saying this so you don't get heartbroken because theres a small chance he would.

i think he is happy here like and we should keep him one of our best players if he wants to stay.

Yes the movement was fantastic, Really hope Agger stays also think we're a really strong team if we keep him, also should remember it was a poor team so let's not get too exaggerated either.

Be nice to get a team a bit closer to home this time. Avoid Feyernoord though for the sake of our away support's health. Luzern would be nice as it's a beautiful part of Switzerland, not forgetting also that David Fairclough had a spell there.

Good game that. Suarez and Borini with some nice touches between them, seeing Lucas back gave me a hard on.

Agger leaves I will seriously lose the plot.

People may diss competitions like the Carling Cup and Europa League but I personally prefer those matches to any others. Those games tend to actually be about the football and the players, fans enjoying themselves. Loved today's match just for those reasons.

Lovely to see Lucas back, Suarez and Gerrard linking up, Johnson's goal, Agger's performance that just screamed "i want to stay", dominant, controlling football, and finally Anfield in good voice and humour.

I'd love to see us smash Feyenoord.

It didn't sound like that to me, it was longer and went on after Carragher had passed to Spearing and back.

It was shoot lad, I was there, don't try and make something out of nothing.

Surprised the atmosphere was actually decent, in 306 for this one, the Agger chants were great, hope they all came across on TV AGGERS GOING NOWHERE NA NA NA NA, good to see him throw his shirt in the crowd at the end too.

Very enjoyable first 45 and a decent 2nd half. Too early to draw conclusions but it was good to see the team of last season up and at 'em from the off and also Borini scoring on his home debut. Good tempo and good movement for most of the match.

What can you say about Suarez? He is incredible. Yes Gomel are lower league level, but he also tore up far better PL defences in his first season and a half.

It's so sad to know that had we tied 1-1 or won 1-0 this thread would have had much more activity.  :(

To be fair, when we're all saying, nice movement, good performance, great to see Suarez on fire, good goal for Borini, Lucas is boss and I hope Agger stays, it doesn't leave much room for discussion

Nice to know people are celebrating and sitting off happy rather than feeling the need to come here and bemoan our terrible performances.

If we managed to play like that every week, top 4 would be ours.

Some nice football tonight.  Regardless of standard of opposition it was interesting to see how Liverpool coped with a team who defended deep and in numbers which is something that we will no doubt face quite often throughout the season.

Match fitness and sharpness are only going to improve so hopefully fewer of those gilt-edged chances from tonight will be missed in future games.

Am I right in thinking that Agger has 2 years left on contract and has not yet signed a new one?  That being the case, Brendan Rodgers and the owners know that his value halves next summer.  Let's hope a new contract is sorted soon as he was made to play in a Brendan Rodgers team.

i love agger and i think he is a really top lad, but it wouldn't be a case of him being forced out to russia or something. do you really think it's impossible if a bid was accepted for him that he wouldn't refuse to go to the prem champions - down the road and probably on higher wages? i'm just saying this so you don't get heartbroken because theres a small chance he would.

i think he is happy here like and we should keep him one of our best players if he wants to stay.
the man just tattooed YNWA on his fingers, what more can he do to tell everyone that he doesn't want to go anywhere??

This is not the Agger thread.

Great performance. Didn't go amiss as to how collected and intelligent Lucas' play was especially for the first goal.

Let's wait until Wigan and the like come to Anfield.

Where our system will be tested is when teams "park the bus" for most of the game and hit us with fast paced counters. That and good set pieces.

Nice to see the team already prepped pretty well for the kick off of the league as the lads look like they are ready very little rust to be seen there. Back line was tight enough, full backs got forward very well, Lucas was very tidy as always, Jonjo was very useful with the ball. SG linked lovely with the front line while Borini did very decent. great finish, Downing is looking a wee bit like his old self although I personally prefer a Bellamy type out there and Suarez was a terror.  Hunted in packs, kept possession well and was always looking for the quick ball btw their backline. Well in for your debut at Anfield Brendan more of the same please

Oh how I've missed that.  ;D

No amount of football in the last few months (no matter how good it may have been at times) can compare to the excitement I felt tonight, even if it was only against a club of Gomel's stature. Roll on the season.
