Sorry totally missed that question.

I got it for £40 a month on a deal for students (missus is doing a Masters degree, so I guess classes as a student, not that they actually asked).

I also referred her to join, so I get a £15 Amazon voucher and she gets £50 account credit, so brings the monthly price in the end down to a little under £36.

Bit of feedback regarding Hyperoptic. The speed is very good when using an Ethernet cable but expect that speed to half if/when using WIFI.

Secondly if you do require technical help from them good luck. I asked them why my external HDD that is connected to my Hyperoptic router via USB isn't showing on my home network. That was 5 days ago and they still don't know why  :o

If it's just speed then they are fine but probably have the worst IT support in the world. Good thing about it though is they wont try and fob you off like some they will actually say I have no idea how to fix that sorry  ;D

Just had Hyperoptic 1Gbps installed this morning, waiting for it to be activated. Fella said it would take 'about an hour or so' but we're still waiting, we're comming up to nearly 3 hours.

We're currently with BT and its fucking shite. We pay nearly £50pm for internet and phone (the phone we only have so we can use the internet) and i'm getting about 6Mbps on my phone via wifi. I generally use my 4G on my phone rather than connect to the internet at home.

I also need to look into LAN cabling more. I've read little bits from this thread about Cat6 cables - do all devices support Cat6 cables? Can i just swop out my old cables for Cat6 ones?

I have homeplugs which i'm going to use to connect to my QNAP and also my PS4 using a network switch. Do i need to be looking for a switch that supports cat6 or do they all, its just the cable that varies?

Cheers
J

EDIT - We're online now. Its quick as f*ck when plugging a cable directly into the router. Its alot slower via wifi etc...

Craig, did you find that your connection speed increased from when it first went live? They told us that it should speed up "once it settles down" as it was only activated today.

Do you use those speeds or are you using Wifi everywhere?

I did some tests today using ethernet connections:

Router -> Laptop (377 DL & 681 up)

Router -> Switch -> laptop (94 DL & 93 UP)

Router -> Homeplug -> Homeplug -> Laptop (38 DL & 43 UP)

Router -> Homeplug -> Homeplug -> Switch -> Laptop (37 DL & 43 Up)

I think i need to invest in a new 1000Gbps Switch and homeplugs. Cat5E cables are enough to support those speeds, is that correct? Its about another £100 to replace what i've got, but if i'm paying £50pm then surely i best make use of it everywhere.

Yeah it definitely got faster over the first week or so.

Only things that aren't wired are the iPhones and iPads, oh and the gf's laptop, but none of them are used for anything more than light browsing.

My Mac and the TV are all connected direct to the router using CAT6.

You should have used my email as a referrer, as you'd have got £50 off your bill (me too!)  ;D

If anyone is contracted to BT but wants out, they’ve just announced a price rise for January which means you can tear up your contract with no penalty. Shoving mine over to Sky for a few quid a month cheaper plus £80 cashback.

Sorted it. The shitty router that they provided only supported 2.4Ghz via wifi. Purchased a netgear R7000 and set that up to use 5Ghz - pretty happy with this:

I'm also with Hyperoptic, And also getting poor wifi speeds. I'm not very technical so if I buy the r700 do I just unplug the the one they sent me and plug this one in instead?

Yuck i have the 100 Mb package as well,that upload is shockingly bad.

When i'm in California for Spring /Summer i get 300mb and upload over 100mb on Comcast Xfinity.

In all seriousness, is there any genuine advantage to having broadband above 100mbps?

[emoji23] I don't really know what fibre optic is only that your Internet is a lot quicker thought maybe it was only tied to one provider if set up with them. Thanks!

It will mean fibre optic is to the local phone exchange, so all the houses from that exchange will be able to get fibre optic (from any provider).

It's easy to check on any of the providers website whether they will be able to provide Fibre or not, just enter the address. Should tell you if it is is FTTC as CraigDS mentions or FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).

Out of interest what do you do that led you to think it was worth paying the extra for such fast internet? I only ask because I moved from Virgin 200mb to BT Infinity 52mb, it might be slower but it’s still more than quick enough for gaming and I can actually have more than one device using the network at the same time without it being crippled which happened with Virgin.

The price difference given the offer I got was not much between the 1GB and 100mb speeds, so just opted for the faster one.
