Which site is considered more accurate, this or speedtest.net?

Speedtest shows my download as 33meg higher and latency as 100ms lower, it also seems to match other sites better.

speedtest has more servers to choose from.
voipreview has one server in the usa.

I hope this is the correct thread to post. I am out of contract for my home phone and broadband and was wondering different people's experiences. Obviously cost is important, but, I am happy to pay a little extra for good broadband. I sadly don't have Virgin media available in my area. BT is an obvious consideration as long as the price is sensible. What are the likes of Plus Net, etc like?

Thanks for any help.

depends what your needs are.

for me it would fall into 2 categories.
gaming and non gaming activities.

if you want gaming then id be inclined to stay away from main stream isps.
some will do ok but imo would depend on location in relation to the internet highway...may factors involved which are not publicly known.
but non mainstream are less likely to be over subscribed to less chance of traffic management.
you pay more and your more likley to get better routing outside of their network into less congested tiers...thus routing out will be better.

if your gonna stick to mainstream them you wont have to do much research...they are pretty much all the same.

I'm with Virgin and the last 2 days has been hideous playing BF1and MWR. I keep being booted out of games mid session (around 50%) with all my hard work coming to nothing and not registering. I'm shite at what mean's what internet speed wise and I'm guessing my internet is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

My results are;

Download 8.66mbps
Upload 5.10mbps
Ping 21ms

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated...

My connection from PS4 to router is with a lan cable.

download pingplotter (its a free trial but when it runs out its still very useful).

stick the ea server in 159.153.234.54

and test away.

ignore the hops that show 100% packet loss.
watch out for wide variable ping on hops.

anything blatantly obvious ring up virgin with the info.

it may help.

they could be doing upgradng near your area which may cause problems.

yeah.

but for online gaming you still want over 1MBs ..for those games that you may be chose as host.

Thanks I'll download it and give it a go. I rang Virgin who reset my box/router and everything was ok for 24hrs, now it's back to square one and losing session mid game.

Bought a new house in a new development in Sept. It's a village that's a little out in the sticks. I'm about 5km from my local exchange and about 1.8km from my live fibre box. Needless to say I can't get fibre despite the box being active. And my ordinary broadband is awful at around 1.2mbp d and 0.5mbp u.

What's worse is, the houses on the far side of the street can receive fibre and get around 40/50 Mbps d. It's physically impossible for them to be closer to the fibre box. I've contacted openreach, but I get some general reply about distances and 'looking into alternatives'. I've spoke to a few openreach engineers when they've been out onsite here, and they can not understand why BT won't supply fibre to our row.

There is a government aided fibre scheme in Northern Ireland, which aims to have fibre to 95% of households by December 2017 - and our postcode is scheduled for that very month. But having worked for the government for 9 years previously  I know all to well what happens to deadlines...so I guess I'm stuck!

New broadband connection to my apartment from Hyperoptic. They run fibre to the building, then direct into the apartment. That speed is on my Mac then connected via a CAT6 cable.

It's a 1Gbps connection so hoping may get a little faster over the next week.

I was getting an up and down connection between about 25 and 59 from my BT connection until I upgraded the cabling to the router. I am now getting a steady 65. An investment of £7 in a Cat6 RJ11 cable to replace the flimsy thing that came with the router now means I can watch Netflix in 4K without the fear that it is suddenly going to buffer. Made up.

Could be one of any number of reasons. Does the laptop have one of the older ‘Draft N’ certified wireless cards? If so might be worth forcing it down to B/G rather than N in the advanced settings.
