Manic Street Preachers 21st anniversary...

... of their first single release.

http://www.manicstreetpreachers.com/

I can't believe its really been so long. It's a real shame they are only doing one UK gig this year at the O2 in London, oh well I suppose I will just have to settle for buying the album as I don't really fancy a visit to the big smoke.

Saw them on the Postcards tour this year, they were boss as always, still making great music and as a massive fan I hope there's lots more left in them too.

Did you watch them in the UK as they seemed to have played mainly European venues this year? They usually play in the North West around about this time of year so I just took it for granted they would again. I'll have to keep my eye on when they're coming back to the area.

They played the Olympia Theatre in Dublin mate, saw them there, was my fifth time seeing them live I believe. They had played there the previous year too on the Journal For Plague Lovers tour, one of the best gigs I've been to.

The subtext of this song
I've thought about it for so long
But it's really not the sort of thing
That people want to hear us sing

The context of this song
Well I could go on and on
But it's still unfashionable
To believe in principles

South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night

South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night

The reason for this song
Well maybe it's a pointless one
But thank you Jimmy McGovern
For reminding me of what lives on

The ending for this song
Well I haven't really thought of one
There's nothing I could ever say
That could really take the pain away

South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night
South South Yorkshire - mass murderer
How can you sleep at night, sleep at night

when I saw them on the JFPL tour, they came out and played the full album first, all the way through... then a greatest hits. Assume it was the same everywhere, was immense.

Epic band. Although I hated them at first, thought Motown Junk was terrible at the time, but by the time they released Generation Terrorists I was obsessed. I never got into Gold Against The Soul, but have loved virtually everything else.

The aficionados will laugh at my choice  but 'if you tolerate this' was, for me sensational.

What a meaningful song about the old soldiers and heroes.

And on the street tonight an old man plays
With newspaper cuttings of his glory days

Great lyrics. I think it was the Spanish Civil war they were singing about, a lot of good Liverpudlians went out there to fight.  Think that's right but i'm happy to be corrected.

Anyhow's, great tune.

good stuff Adeemo. Love the acoustic versions. James did a solo, acoustic Everything Must Go when I last saw them in May and it was immense. There is a version up on youtube, from Wolverhampton I think, thats not bad, but since its recorded by a randomer in the crowd, its ruined by mongs in the crowd spitting shite!

I remember that. Around that time, James also did a cracking acoustic version of Wham's Last Christmas, think it was on TFI Friday or something similar!

Great version of it here, Dave Eringa's keyboard gives it a very different sound to the original.

I've never really like them and I'm gutted they have covered This is the Day, which I love.

So that's my productive contribution to the thread :)

As a kid, I vividly remember my Dad playing This is My Truth Tell me Yours over and over.  Some of the songs from that album I grew up with and now are some of my most played songs on iTunes.

The Everlasting in particular...

Seen them twice, and was blown away each time.

Design for Life, Motorcycle Emptiness, Autumnsong, Golden Platitudes, If You Tolerate..., Stole the Sun, etc.

Brilliant band.
The match kicks off in 30 minutes ya silly twat

Saw them on the Postcards tour this year, they were boss as always, still making great music and as a massive fan I hope there's lots more left in them too.
Have seen them the last two times at the Olympia in Dublin.Going to the o2 gig in London in December.38 songs.Should be immense.
Nicky Wire on Sky Arts now on for anyone who missed it.

Great gig. Sound was suspect at times but certainly not the fault of the band. Bass mix was was almost unheard.

I love this. I wish it was on the album in its own right and not a hidden track!
