The EAL support assistant in the school Ive just been in left her payslip on the NQT's desk one day.

She earned more than the teacher.

She will be very much the exception to the rule. Teaching Assistant wages are pretty much half a teachers starting salary

High level can still earn more than £20K a year.

Thats what my flatmate says her TA is on.

Aye maybe, but it'll take ages to get there. Like I say, I loved the job but needed more financial security. Some of our TAs have to have second jobs to make ends meet like

THat'd usually be only HLTAs, which takes a few years to get to, and after that you're pretty much stuck at that pay point.

I know in Ireland they earn feck all, I was barely getting minimum wage.

But I think it's different here...

It really isn't! Support workers in schools earn a pittance I'm afraid.
Unrelatedly, I'm going to get a year 7 to sit a GCSE, now that's value added!!

If not, brilliant for them (and you!).

Always wondered that, I went to a multi-cultral school shame some of the lads and ladies couldn't do GCSEs in Somalian/Urdu and all that they would have passed with flying colours!

Did do some private tutions during my Engg days.Used to teach science(Physics and Chem-Organic,Inorganic and Physical) and Maths to junior high school kids. It can get extremely frustrating at times.

That is what I have heard, prepares you more for the actual teaching side of things, but perhaps lacks the theory/academic side slightly if you don't do enough work! But I will be knuckling down if I get it! Plus there is no way we could totally lose awage so the paid aspect helps!

Well in Gary, you're doing good stuff in a school that probably isn't the easiest from what I've heard.
GTP v PGCE - in all honesty I don't know. I don't know much about the differences, but they both get you to the same place so I would doubt that either is 'better' than the other.
Anyway, im looking forward to a day off tomorrow, god bless occasional days, I'm shattered!!

Didn't know this thread was still running. Anyone fed up with all the political bollocks at schools now. Its winding me up. Another green paper out and more changes on the way, with thematic curriculums and so on. Its starting to grind me down now. Every year there seems to be 3 or 4 big pushes that are never seen through and evaluated. IE a.p.p instead of SATS etal.

If we was a business who changed there business plan every 3 months, we would be bankrupt!

Probably 'work' less than 195, although we're never fully 'switched off' during that time are we.
Agree tho, I was thinking that going full time this year would kill me but I'm still just about loving it. Helped by all my classes being, on the whole, pretty nice

When I tell people who I haven't seen for years and I tell them i'm a teacher, their response is always the same, "WHAT? You a TEACHER? Ha!"

The way I acted in school it surprises me sometimes too! Telling you now teaching is the way forward! Beast of a job - if you can do it!
