Toxteth
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:52:40 pm »
Heard something on the radio yesterday which told me The Real Thing were from Toxteth. Never knew that. So it got me thinking about the place and I reckon it's the most 'famous' district in Liverpool. Have a look at some notable residents:

Reginald Bevins, Cabinet minister in the 1950s and 1960s, was the local MP.
Ian Callaghan, footballer.
Alex Cox, filmmaker. Cox was responsible for the films Repo Man, Sid and Nancy, and Revengers Tragedy.
Robbie Fowler, football player.
Howard Gayle, former Liverpool FC player.
Niall Griffiths, author.
Alois Hitler, Jr. (1882-1956), half-brother of Adolf Hitler (Adolf is said to have stayed here with his brother for six months in 1912-13)
William Patrick Hitler nephew of Adolf Hitler.
Jeremiah Horrocks, astronomer. First to observe the Transit of Venus. A plaque dedicated to him can be found in Toxteth Ancient Chapel.
Holly Johnson, former lead singer of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Fred Lawless, writer and playwright.
Mark Moraghan, actor.
Wes Paul, guitarist and singer.
Willy Russell writer and playwright.
Herbert Louis Samuel, the first Viscount Samuel of Mount Carmel and of Toxteth, who became the first Jewish Home Secretary.
Margaret Simey (1906-2004), political and social campaigner
The Real Thing, soul band of the 1970s/1980s.
Ringo Starr,
Allan Ivo Steel (1892-1917) was born in Toxteth and was an English cricketer.
Curtis Warren.

Surely no other district can claim to have so much talent?

When Liverpool was at it's peak it was the place to live, when it was at it's lowest it certainly wasn't. Orange Grove as a kid 3 doors down from Gary Skyner (you missed him of your list) what an achievement considering, are kids mucker. If anything the North end is more bandit country these days.

Nice to see you popped yourself in there at the bottom of the list there lid. :P ;D

Ah, the homeland :)

My mum used to hang around with one of The Real Thing. Apparently she took me along too - absolutely no memory of it whatsoever, mind..... :)

Toxteth Ancient Chapel - do you mean Ye Ancient Chapel of Toxteth at the bottom of Park Road, behind where the Corpy bus sheds were? I used to go there - oldest Free Church in the world apparently......beautiful inside (the old bit).

Tocky is great. Possibly my favourite district in Liverpool. You can take Ringo Starr of that list though as conk face has no talent. Curtis Warren is also debatable .

Was Gary born in Toxteth? I recall he moved to Aigburth when he was about 9?
I've worked with Gary loads of times. Cracking fella and very funny.
I used to drink with him, went to his wedding. Saw him in Tesco Allerton a few weeks ago, we were discussing jokes and material  etc when I asked if texts stole his thunder and people may have heard some jokes well before he told them.....he then told me a joke that a text couldn't do justice to and I was in stitches.

Gary is a genuine lad and as I type this I'm wondering how his protest is.

Wrong thread but he's been in the news lately and people in work have been talking about him. So I tried hard to recount so many of his jokes from his first gigs when we used to support him and go everywhere as a mob and they were in tears.

I hope he won't mind me putting this on the web but.....and of course he tells it brilliantly.......

Gary- I've just had me car broken into, me Afghan coat and Cd's were nicked.
copper - cars are broken into every day Gary, there's little chance of recovering your stolen items
Gary - OK i might not get me Cd's back but get out there and find me coat.
copper - Gary, about 200 coats are stole everyday from various establishments, we cant guarantee finding this for you.
Gary - yes you can, its mine, its Afghan and it cost 300 fuckin quid. sort it now
copper - I understand it was expensive and you are upset losing it, but how do we find your exact Afghan coat.
Gary - because how many fuckin people are gonna be walkin roung with an Afghan fuckin coat on with sleeves 9 inches long!!!

I know, that was a circa 1985 effort. Can you imagine a hesitant crowd of a few hundred looking at him and wondering why we were already giggling at the side...........we knew he was going to be as funny as fuck but hadn't heard half of his scripted stuff.
As I say I can't type or text the one he told me a few weeks ago.

Eddie amoo played for our sunday league team in the business houses  for years, one particular cold and windy morning the manager was having a right moan as a load of the lads were late for a game and had been out on the ale on Saturday night. He turns to the L8 soul king and says

look at Eddie, he turns up every week he's never late or bladdered like half of youse, he's fucking flown home from Germany for this    and one of the lads goes  his arms must be fucking killing him  :D

Maybe you had to be there?

Wasnt Arthur Askey from Toxteh?

According to Wiki...

Askey was born at 29 Moses Street, Dingle, Liverpool, the eldest child and only son of Betsy (née Bowden, d. 1949), originally from Knutsford, Cheshire, and Samuel Askey (d. 1958), company secretary of Sugar Products of Liverpool. Six months after his birth the family moved to 90 Rosslyn Street, Liverpool. It was here that a sister, Irene Dorothy, was born in 1908 (according to the 1911 UK Census).

...so more like a Dingle lad.

There's a thread on Yo! here that's been trying to construct a list, though it's including some Edge Hill and Wavertree people as well.

Arbitrary boundaries abound.

Toxteth, for me is: From the river, straight up Parliament st, down Smithdown, then I think it's right at Rose Lane and straight back down to the river via Otterspool.

That was always where I drew the boundary too. Maybe Dingle takes in a bit of the other side as well.

Nah, we're all still going to argue it  ;D

The cemetary by the Asda on Smithdown is Toxteth Cemetary isn't it? So that counts. Hartington Rd is Toccy, as is Lodgey IMO. But I wouldn't say The Asda is in Toxteth. It's not easily definable by a straight line.

Unlike the Dingle, which I always thought was the river side of Park Road, all the way from Parliament Street down to where Aigburth Road starts.

Yeah, same. And once Aigburth road starts, its Aigburth, even before Otterspool.

As for Rose Lane, bitch please! Penny Lane has a claim but only cos it's sufficiently close to Greenbank....
