Three coffees a day linked to a range of health benefits
« on: November 23, 2017, 12:21:00 pm »
Well, having just skimmed the article I'll take this as gospel. That first coffee in the morning is a godsend and I've always been under the impression its unhealthy. I usually average 2 or 3 a day. I know a lot of people try to cut down/quit it for health reasons. I guess there'll be a new study out next week saying its bad though.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/nov/23/three-coffees-a-day-linked-to-a-range-of-health-benefits

Research based on 200 previous studies worldwide says frequent drinkers less likely to get diabetes, heart disease, dementia and some cancers

People who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are more likely to see health benefits than problems, experiencing lower risks of premature death and heart disease than those who abstain, scientists have said.

The research, which collated evidence from more than 200 previous studies, also found coffee consumption was linked to lower risks of diabetes, liver disease, dementia and some cancers.
hree or four cups a day confer the greatest benefit, the scientists said, except for women who are pregnant or who have a higher risk of suffering fractures.

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed drinks worldwide. To better understand its effects on health, Robin Poole, a public health specialist at Britain’s University of Southampton, led a research team in an “umbrella review” of 201 studies based on observational research and 17 studies based on clinical trials across all countries and all settings.

“Umbrella reviews” synthesise previous pooled analyses to give a clearer summary of diverse research on a particular topic.

“Coffee drinking appears safe within usual patterns of consumption,” Pool’s team concluded in their research, published in the BMJ British medical journal on Wednesday.

Drinking coffee was consistently linked with a lower risk of death from all causes and from heart disease. The largest reduction in relative risk of premature death is seen in people consuming three cups a day, compared with non-coffee drinkers.

Drinking more than three cups a day was not linked to harm, but the beneficial effects were less pronounced.

Coffee was also associated with a lower risk of several cancers, including prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancer, as well as type-2 diabetes, gallstones and gout, the researchers said. The greatest benefit was seen for liver conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver.

In a linked editorial, Professor Eliseo Guallar from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health in Maryland wrote that “coffee is safe, but hold the cake”.

He argued that the latest study showed that “coffee consumption seems generally safe”, but added: “Coffee is often consumed with products rich in refined sugars and unhealthy fats, and these may independently contribute to adverse health outcomes ...

“Does coffee prevent chronic disease and reduce mortality? We simply do not know. Should doctors recommend drinking coffee to prevent disease? Should people start drinking coffee for health reasons? The answer to both questions is ‘no’.”

Poole’s team noted that because their review included mainly observational data, no firm conclusions could be drawn about cause and effect. But they said their findings support other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake.

I wasn't a coffee drinker until about 18 months ago. Now I cant go without it, but I used to drink a lot of fizzy drinks and I've lessened off on them now. I have my coffee with low fat milk and no sugar, it took a while to get used to but I suppose a few cups a day like that isn't all that bad? Or is it?!

God I love my solitary cup of coffee in the morning. Got to a point where id be pissed off if I couldnt have it. Nothing fancy just one of those 2 in one sachets with a couple of sweeteners.  Love it.

I have these NY Coffee's.  Cheap as chips for a bag but they are so bloody nice. Just one a day though then its tea for the other hot drinks.

I know for a fact there are a couple of professional Fresh ground coffee aficionados on RAWK who dabble with coffee for a living.  I suppose they may read this post and think..You fucking Philistine :)

Never been a fan, however my GF loves it and has a proper machine. Since trying one from that I'm slowly turning into a coffee drinker.

Still prefer a cup of tea though.

Great.
I drink loads, but never really felt bad over it - coffee is amazing. I start my day with two cups of french press coffee, then three shots of espresso before work, two shots during lunch break, one instant coffee in the afternoon and if I have to work in the evening another instant after work. On Friday I'll have a stroger evening coffee just because I can.

I don't drink coffee myself but know it is very popular, the coffee shops in and around Newcastle are always busy.

You could always give Starbucks a miss for one day and send the money saved here instead.    :)

The title is completely misleading, the report on Radio 4 this morning suggested that research found you can consume up to 3 a day and it won't do you any harm. It's not suggesting it will give you health benefits by having 3.

Never drank it until I had kids, I had heard about its magical properties but not fully understood them until I needed to raise myself from the dead every morning. Dark magic.

I have just looked at two reports on this, one in the Guardian and another report on Forbes. They are reporting it as anyone drinking 3 to 4 cups a day get certain health benefits, compared to those who don't drink it at all. Anyone having above 4 then the benefits are not so clear. As in all things, you can have anything in moderation.  ;D

I used to hate the taste but love the smell.

I don't know why but about a year ago I started to drink it black. The thought of people putting milk into their coffee turned my stomach for some reason (I have no issues with milk!).However, now I'll have a bit of skimmed milk in my coffee occasionally or if I have a coffee out, I'll have a flat white. Coco Di Mama's coffee is absolutely ace IMO - love their flat whites.

I tend to have one or two black coffees per day, during the week. Maybe two or three times a month I would have a coffee out as I tend to work from home. I haven't been hit by that 'need one to wake me up' thing - can happily go a few days without one.

I would say that the Aldi's Barista Moments americano coffee is superb.

Also, living in London - the amount of money people must spend on takeaway coffee is outrageous. My Husband is one them, though he has cut back. There are Nespresso cafes popping up around London now too.

Only drink decaf, maybe one cup a week. The real stuff sends the anxiety levels into the stratosphere.

I hate the stuff if only because of the effect it has on colleagues who are completely wired on caffeine at times and try to make a big deal out of things.

Just chill the fuck out, be zen and start drinking green tea.

Same here

Ever since I interned in the legal department of an Italian truck manufacturer, I have been a coffee drinker. These says I drink 3 x double and one single espresso's per day, I have cut back!

- It has to be black coffee or espresso.
- It has to be an Italian brand of coffee or an Italian style blend. Starbucks and 'artisan' coffees leave me cold.
- Instant coffee is not coffee, if you think otherwise, I pity you.

Keeps me in a job.

Love the stuff since I use to sneak a gulp of my dads when I was a kid. Drank it with milk and 2 sugars until I got into the industry, when I was encouraged to drop the sugar as it hides flaws. Then dropped milk when you realise how much weight you can pile on drinking 4-5 cups a day.

Now, a long black/americano all day.
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

Rollies as in rolled smokes or?

My question too.

Iced coffee is my go to. May not taste as satisfying as a hot one but it's refreshing and definitely perks me up a bit along with the caffeine rush. I probably have about 3 a day on average.

Don't have soy milk btw, that fucks up your hormones - from studies and my own personal experience. Increases your estrogen count.

Rolled tobacco. Don't touch the other stuff. Iam paranoid enough.

Same here, also five a day is my measure. Nothing beats coffee and smokes.

I couldn't drink coffee for years because of the migraines I suffered, but that's almost disappeared now so I started drinking it. I love it now, though I do drink tea as well.
My Dad has chronic migraines, he has had for 30 years or so.  They can last up to 3 days.  He stopped coffee years ago and drinks Earl Grey tea, a few cups per day.

Absolutely correct.

Why?
Why?  Seems highly unlikely to me.

“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
“Generosity always pays off. Generosity in your effort, in your work, in your kindness, in the way you look after people and take care of people. In the long run, if you are generous with a heart, and with humanity, it always pays off.”
