Saw the film for the first time the other day. It's actually quite chilling in an old school low budget kind of way.

This looks completely different in style to the movie to be fair. Be interesting if it'll work.

The series coming out meant I finally got round to watching the film. Too short! Really well written in pretty much everything, the way the lead characters act to serve as the human faces, the sense that "if the technology ever came to be, I could see people wanting to do this", the way things unfolded.

Though show will be different, looks like a strong cast and hopefully, though from different angle, will have something of the films intelligence.

Crichton's entire schtick is the idea of humanity's abuse of power in the face of emerging technologies, be that for money or fame or to bone androids in the desert.

Few decades since I last saw it but remember Yul Brynner robotic psychopath as very chilling.

Totally on board for the foreseeable future, with no misgivings. It definitely wasn't perfect, but it was gripping and set up plenty of questions for the rest of the season. I do worry a bit about its longevity; hopefully it won't be quite as cerebral as it seems, and it'll manage to hold on to plenty of viewers. They're spending Game of Thrones money on it but I can't imagine it pulling a Game of Thrones audience.

Just saw the first episode, seems to be quite interesting!

I haven't seen the film yet, is it good? Would watching the film interfere with the plot or are they two separate takes on the same concept?

I enjoyed the film - think it's from 1973, but some great ideas - Michael Crichton really does great concepts for his stories.

It is 2 different takes on the same concept mate - so you'll be ok for watching the film without ruining the series.

There is also the lesser known sequel film Futureworld - which has it's moments, but not quite up there with Westworld. Both are available from the usual sources... ;)

Hope you enjoy mate

The series seemingly has nothing to do with the film, I'd still highly recommend watching the film though.

Spoiler
however they referenced a critical event happening 30 years ago so maybe that was the movie, also when they went in the warehouse bit near the start there was a Delos logo (the company from the original) in what looked to be an old part of the complex for guests

There was a follow up film called Futureworld.

And in Westworld film you also had scenes in Middle age world and Roman world I guess loads of scope if they want to take it there but I have a feeling they wont.

That's what it was! It was bugging the hell out of me, glad I got Paint it Black quickly else that would've bugged me too.

Seems pretty clear that the code causing all of this isn't a bug, it's an intentional change made to provoke wildly unpredictable behaviour. Not sure what the goal is yet of course but it'll be interesting finding out.

Needless to say, the first episode of the series was brilliant, it looks very promising!

It was actually a Michael Crichton book before it was a film. I haven't read it, so not sure if the film and series resemble that, but I assume they do.

There's definitely a Blade Runner vibe there, as well as Ghost in the Shell. Those themes have been fleshed out a bit from the original film. That'll definitely be the focus over the course of the series.

I loved the pilot. Definitely my cup of tea, this. Doing a TV show is definitely the way to go instead of doing a reboot/remake film, which would no doubt ended up being terrible like most are. The cast and production value in this is so good, it might as well be an hour long film every week anyway.

Regarding Harris' character:

Spoiler
I don't think he's human. He's probably one of the earlier (probably even experimental) models that's went rogue, like Yul Brynner in the original.

Regarding Harris' character:

Spoiler
I don't think he's human. He's probably one of the earlier (probably even experimental) models that's went rogue, like Yul Brynner in the original.

Never seen GITS, but it has been on my 'to-do' list for a while now.

Spoiler
I think he is mate, I think he's stuck in the system (or a prisoner, or addicted), and is trying to somehow get to the next 'level'.

Is this going to take over as a flagship HBO project from GoT? Seems like that. I honestly haven't had any idea what's this about but I have to say I'm very impressed. You can't go much wrong with Sir Anthony Hopkins playing character as interesting as this one. All in all can't wait for the next episode.

The biggest problem anywhere in the world is that people's perceptions of reality are filtered through the screening mesh of what they want, and do not want, to be true.

Some things I don't really get about it. These may be stupidest observations/queries but I will have to watch it again as I was being constantly distracted whilst watching.

Is the world they are in is actually physically real? I was under the impression before it started that they were in a virtual reality of sorts. Like a matrix sort of thing.

Are the newcomers just dressed up and sent to the location to start their day and do as they wish?

Ed Harris says he's been there for 30 years, is his day restarted on a daily basis?

Are the management people and the programming team on site?

Is this like a Truman show sort of world where is boxed in? Surely the landscape is too vast for that to be the case.

Sorry if these are.idiotic questions but want to gain a grasp of this. Will have to rematch again
