Looking at him now, it's crazy to think he wasn't that highly rated when he was younger, he's easily the best defender I've seen at the club and we've had some great ones in the past.

I don't think anyone believes Van Dijk is a better player than Messi. Only that he had a better season and was an integral part of his team's successes at club and national levels. If the Ballon D'or was truly just awarded to the best player in the world, Messi would have about 12.

That seems highly unlikely to be the reason, all domestic leagues would technically be a uefa competition as well, not to mention the years when Messi or Ronaldo have won it when the others was better in the CL.

This absolutely! Van Dijk, Alisson, Salah, Mane, Bobby, Fabinho ... and that’s before the two best fullbacks in Europe, etc. What a collection of fantastic players that we have today. Klopp, Edwards, etc have done wonders to put us so close back to on top of the world

And our Virgil will win Ballon D’or. A travesty if anyone but him does. Best defender in the world and one of the best players in the world today

Messi is not the best player in the world IMHO.

He is the best forward in the world. He is however not the best goalkeeper nor defender in the world and he would probably do very poorly in those roles and not even be in the top 10,000.

To me, there is no such thing as the best player in the world - there are too many diverse roles in the team to allow for a single monolithic label like that. However where it comes to who has been the most effective player in the world, it is difficult to argue against Van Dijk and the effect he has had on Liverpool's fortunes to almost winning the premiership and winning the CL. Messi comes close in helping Barcelona win another league title but falling short int he CL wil have hurt his cause.

It's all about narratives. Van Dijk is not IMO better than Messi in the same way that Modric defo isn't better but their stories are. A keystone cops defence (we were never that bad but that was the story) transformed overnight seemingly single handed. Winning big ears and Messi shitting the Copa bed sealed it and will seal ballon d'Or.
