I really hope he turns out really good but I'm just a realist. At 1.5 mil for a 29 player who was let go without much fuss, it's more than likely that he won't be very good than him turning out to be what we need. Another squad player.

Pretty sure we got him for free.

We didn't pay anything in terms of a transfer fee but contributed £1.5m towards a loyalty bonus reputed to be worth a total of around £5m.

I fully agreed with Alan Hansen in that Maxi looked sub par and who knows, he could turn out to be a revelation through the season. But let's face facts: he's getting old, we got him for cheap and Atletico didn't make any effort to keep him. If he had been our player and he was playing well like a Carra or Sami or Didi or whatever, don't you think we would have made more of an effort. Almost always, you get what you pay for.

Can't believe I'm answering this but seriously....15 minutes in and you've already decided he's looking sub par,

I dont mean we need squad players. We need width and penetration. Actually we need a solid defence aswell.

With insightful knowledge like that, you should look into a career with Sky sports

Sorry mate, I don't know anything about you, but the way you've spoken about Maxi on this thread, you either know fuck all about him or you know fuck all about footy. He's been an outstanding player for years and will be a great addition for us. "It's more than likely that he won't be very good"??  That's the fucking spirit; writing someone off based on an 18 minute debut cameo in a red shirt. It's a fucking uphill battle these days, it really is.   ::)

Then lets give him a chance (and not 15 odd mins) to show us he can gve us width and penetration.

Easy. Simply become an international regular, perform consistently high in one of the top leagues in the world, score a few cracking goals, show a willingness to retain posession and as a midfielder trackback and help out in defence when needed. Rafa will come knocking one day and you'll get one of those scarves for free when you're presented to Anfield.

Go on then, off you go, get cracking...

Did really well with the time he was given.  Wanted to take some free kicks too but Carra strolled up and told him to fuck off.  To his credit he didnt go straight away, nice to see a player come into the side with some self-confidence...the status quo does us no good.

Good Maxi Rodriguez: 2006 World Cup. About 05-08 Atletico.

Bad Maxi : 29 year old winger who was allowed to leave Atletico without any fuss.

If you think that top quality players that help win leagues come for £1.5 million then you sir are a fool.

Think of it this way: buying any player is a gamble. If you buy an expensive player, the chances that he is successful is high. If you buy on the cheap, the chances that he is successful are low. Maxi may NOT be a flop but the chances are high and if we had something even close to a respectable budget in line with what a club like Liverpool should be getting, I doubt Rafa would have sought the likes of Maxi or Kyrgiakos.

30 million for Schevchenko (sp?) 28 million for Veron, 17 million each for Nani and Anderson 30 million for Berbatov, 18 million for Jo,......need I go on to prove how stupid your point about if you spend big there's a big chance they'll be successful. With any transfer there is risk, no matter what the price. If Maxi can help us to get vtial point i don't care if he's 9, 29 or 99 or what he cost.

If you don't like us spending 1.5 on the likes of maxi and Kyrgiakos, then i'm sure chelsea or Manchester City will welcome you with open arms to help celebrate their next 30 million plus signing, whoever it may be.
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path

Kyrgiakos: we bought him to be 4th pick. Basically to play the same role Sami had last year, the odd game. Meaning we wanted an experienced player who can step in, make a decent to good performance when needed and that's it. It was a choice between that and relying on for instance Ayala for the 4th pick role. We chose to go with Kyrgiakos. You can say we should have gone with Ayala, but it was a choice of two ways and we went with Kyrgiakos. No big deal.

Maxi was brought in for many reasons and it was a very needed signing. He can play LM and RM. With Torres out, we are likely to field Kuyt up front more often. This means we are short of options for RM. Maxi can fill that role. With a very likely departure of Babel, the LM role also opens up, which Maxi could fill. When everyone is fit, the signing of Maxi means that we can afford to rest Kuyt and therefore create a more healthy, decreased dependence on Kuyt.

Naturally we would have preferred to sign for instance David Silva (younger and better than Maxi), but from a squad perspective and from a management perspective, this was a very good piece of business. Remains to be seen if he can do the job for us, but the line of thought is spot on.
