Brazil v Ghana and Spain v France
« on: June 27, 2006, 08:30:42 am »
Robinho, who started Brazil's win over Japan, has been ruled out with a minor thigh muscle injury, so Adriano is likely to return to the side.

Alternatively, Ronaldinho could move up front with Juninho coming into midfield but coach Carlos Alberto Parreira will delay making a decision until Tuesday.

Ghana's influential midfielder Michael Essien is suspended for the match.

Razak Pimpong hopes to be fit after injuring a rib against the USA, but otherwise Ghana are at full strength.

Robinho, who suffered the injury to his right thigh in training on Sunday, says he hopes to be fit for next Saturday's quarter-final, should Brazil reach that stage.

With qualification assured after the first two group games, he was one of five changes made to the team for the 4-1 win over Japan.

But that is just part of coach Parreira's approach of having no-one in the squad whom he regards as being a reserve.

"Whatever team plays we will be well represented," he said.

"Our objective is to win the World Cup. I have 23 solutions and I don't have any problems."

Probable teams

Brazil: Dida; Cafu, Lucio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Gilberto Silva, Juninho Pernambucano, Kaka, Ronaldinho; Ronaldo, Adriano.

Ghana: Richard Kingston; John Paintsil, Habib Mohammed, John Mensah, Shilla Illiasu; Derek Boateng, Stephen Appiah, Otto Addo, Sulley Muntari; Matthew Amoah, Asamoah Gyan.

Referee: Lubos Michel (Slovakia).

Spain coach Luis Aragones has included Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas and Raul in the starting XI after resting many first choice players for the last group game.

Raul should come in at the expense of forward Luis Garcia, and Fabregas will replace midfielder Marcos Senna.

French coach Raymond Domench has Eric Abidal and Zinedine Zidane back after bans so his only worry is whether to play Thierry Henry alone up front.

He will leave it late before deciding if David Trezeguet will partner him.

Probable teams

Spain: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Puyol, Pablo, Pernia, Xavi, Alonso, Fabregas, Raul, Torres, Villa.

France: Barthez, Gallas, Abidal, Thuram, Sagnol, Malouda, Makelele, Vieira, Zidane, Ribery, Henry.

Confident that Brazil/Ghana will be a good match.

Spain v France should be a lot easier on the eye than the last few games too.

Meant to be getting on with decorating the new house tonight, but everything stops at 7.55 tonight for the Spain\France game  ;D

Has the potential to be an absolute classic or a complete anti-climax. Here's hoping it's the classic option, that way the missus won't have a pop for leaving another half painted wall. Told her we should've moved during an odd numbered year.

If Ghana play as well as they did against the Czechs then Brazil might have problems winning this in 90 mins.

Should be two good games today. Hope Ghana score first, that would make it a better game. Hope Spain can get the win tonight but it should be a good game. Hope Xabi plays well and Luis coming from the bench.

Really excited about these games later, they should be really interesting to watch.  It would be nice if Ghana where to beat Brazil, but I think they will be two strong for them.  You always get the feeling when you watch Brazil that they hold back a gear and could just step it up at any time.

As for Spain V France, im hoping Spain will win this as they have have played a much better game in the tournament so far.  France appear to arrogant for me.  Hope Xabi has a decent game and Luis comes off the bench and scores another hat trick ;D

If you want to beat Brazil, make sure you score the winner in 90th min. or you will suffer like Japan.

I read on ssn that Aragones wants to bring in Joaquin to start this game, and that itll be HIM at Luis' expense

France have been perhaps other than Sweden and England the dullest team in the tournament, although I wouldn't put it against them beating Spain based upon their history of underachievement. Hopefully Ghana can pull a nice upset against Brazil.

Brazil 3-1 Ghana
France 1-2 Spain

but I'm not betting on it. Henry on his day is one of the best in the world, Zidane wants to make it a good last one, and certainly even that idiot Domenech should realize he has to play Trezeguet as well..

Both should be cracking matches!

Can't wait for our match though, i hope we don't choke for once in our lives.  It'd be nice to see Xabi put one of his Gerrard-less performances the way he's done at Liverpool but i doubt Aragones will give him much freedom yet having Xavi and Cesc we might just need him to sit back and control the tempo.  I'm worried about our defense because outside of Puyol we're very unexperienced while France are the opposite.  Hopefully Henry isn't very inspired tonight.

I disagree, in this case I think the key are both defences. People may have been critical of the French so far but it remains that they've only conceeded one goal thus far. They also have a very pacy strikeforce whoever they put out there, and for the first time in this tournament they're not actually expected to win, which should pull them together a bit as a unit. With Spain playing 3 up front, France will have to be at their very best defensively to keep them out. That said, with 3 up front Spain will need to be able to get men back should France challenge them on the break with their pace.

Of course the midfields matter, but I think the game really hinges more in these areas.

Henry has been very tame and un-inspiring throughout the whole tournament IMO, so hopefully he will adopt that same style and attitude during this game tonight.
