The clock above Edinburgh Waverley never shows the right time apart from one day per year. It is in fact 5 minutes fast

How is that? Someone care to explain.

Everytime I have gone through the train station to work in Edinburgh, I have never noticed that.
We'll visit the Folies Bergeres,
They like to see the Scousers there,
The women are lovely with skin like a peach,
But no one can move it like Kenny Dalglish.

The tour guide told us.

They have it 5 minutes fast so people don't miss their trains but at ten to midnight (by other watches I presume) on December 31st, they put it to the correct time for Hogmanay.

The great 111 mystery...........

Add the year of your birth, '67 in my case, to your age 44, and you get 111

My son was born in 98, he's 13....111

Mrs Rusty is 45 and born in 66...111

Go figure?

Not much of a mystery.

It's basically just the year you were born plus your age adding up to the current year.
e.g.
1967 + 44 = 2011

It's just that 1900's been knocked off both sides so you get 111.

For anyone who hasn't had their birthday yet this year, they'll get 110.

Where did neckties come  from?

"The neck tie is depicted in Trajan’s column in Rome, Italy. Emperor Trajan ruled the Roman Empire from 98 to 117AD. He was regarded as a military genius and was responsible for the greatest expansion of the Roman Empire. His military conquest of Dacia is commemorated in Trajan’s marble column erected around 113 AD, where thousands of soldiers are shown wearing various styles of neckwear. Some think that it was a sign of honor befitting exceptional fighters."

Then I was having a conversation with my South American drug-dealing, murdering friends tonight and learned what a "Colombian necktie" is: "A method of execution in which the victim’s throat is slashed vertically, then his tongue is pulled out through the gaping wound toward the sternum, after which the victim usually dies of asphyxiation or blood loss. It was used as a method of intimidation during La Violencia (circa 1948–1958)." :o

Amazing facts
« Reply #1076 on: January 24, 2024, 09:51:40 pm »
Did you know that it took 66 million years (which btw is one of the largest numbers I've ever heard of, and is literally incomprehensible), for this creature

to turn into this

I think that's right anyway, it sounds right. 10 million generations, maybe less. Given how many generations that is, TEN MILLION, an incalculable number that sounds like a correct recollection of what almost certainly happened. Makes sense to me. I hope I've remembered the number and it wasn't more than that, or I've got it totally wrong and it's impossible or something.

So a quick disclaimer, if the facts in this post is actually misinformation, or is not up to date with the latest scientific evidence, then it would be wholly unintentional. The facts I've tried my damnedest to present are what I vaguely remember to be the consensus opinion of evolutionary biologists and I only wanted to share in the merriment of knowing the vast array of fun, surprising and even sometimes counterintuitive information our greatest minds have discovered for all to memorise.

Thanks.

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the number's correct.

Just doing cigarette packet maths... 2nd generation you could imagine maybe thumbs, 3rd generation, maybe different types of knees, 4th generation, i dunno a beard or whatever, with that rate of change amd after an such unbelievable number of iterations, millions upon millions, you would find that a shrew-like protoprimate might evolve into to a creature that tries to harness the earth's internal electromagnetic production as a never-ending supply of free energy, or whatever it was he was working on.

But obviously don't take my word for it, I'm just spitballing and I'm not an expert. I'm sure there were other things involved.
