I think he could do it.

Not saying he will, but I reckon he could.

Oh phew, and it is funny again.
I got the Lucas thing wrong. Will be right on Henderson though. Play him RM, play him CM - Not good enough and never will be.

Oh phew, and it is funny again.

Think about it.

We should expect England to reach the quarter-finals.

You can normally do that without having to face a Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Holland, Portugal etc.

So let's say we are in good form and is it really beyond us to beat a France or a Germany in a one-off game?

If Harry can get Spurs to the CL 1/4 final then he could get England to the World Cup final.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that you could beat them sides in a one off game, but you won't beat two or three sides of that quality in a tournament format.
I am sure in some universes there is an English national side capable of winning the WC, but this isn't one of them.
And I know for a fact that Harry Redknapp will never, ever, ever, irrespective of who you lot play, where you play, and how many referees he can arrange a gift in the post to, take England to a WC final.
I got the Lucas thing wrong. Will be right on Henderson though. Play him RM, play him CM - Not good enough and never will be.

Redknapp's first job - Bournemouth.

Redknapp's second job - West Ham

Redknapp's playing career was with West Ham and Bournemouth, basically the first two clubs he managed were the clubs he grew up with and knew inside and out. But his playing career wasn't really the stuff of legend.

Capello's first job - AC Milan.

Capello also spent the last years of his career with AC Milan. Having already played for Juventus and Roma. In the meantime picking up 4 Serie A titles and 32 caps for Italy. His mentor was also legendary innovator, and iconic manager Arrigo fucking Sacchi who has forgotten more about football than Harry Redknapp could imagine existed.

So when the decision was announced and someone questioned it all they really needed to be reassured that he studied on a daily basis under Arrigo fucking Sachi!

Also look at Villas-Boas.

Half a season at Academica and he gets the Porto job.

That would never happen in England.

And do you know why that is. I'll give you a hint, it's not because he's doing it in Portugal. It's because by the time he was appointed manager of Porto he had spent half of his entire life learning the ways of the game at first from legendary manager Sir Bobby Robson and Jose Mourinho.

That's the reason. You know that minor detail that he'd spent years on the coaching staff of the Portugese, English and Italian champions. An integral part, no less and given high, selfless praise from arguably the biggest ego in world football. Give me an English manager with the same credentials and I'll give you an English manager that would be considered for the job at Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool or either of the Manchester clubs. Sadly for England, such a manager does not exist.

(Liverpool with Hodgson aside) the bigger clubs tend to appoint foreign managers.

Could it be. And this is, after all just a theory based on observation and deduction, that it is simple because that for the past 20 years, give or take, every single manager worthy of managing a big club has been foreign? Just a thought.

For example can you really see Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea or Man City ever appointing an English manager?

Ever is a long time. If another Paisley, Robson, Fagan et al comes along in 10 years they'd be stupid not to.

If you gave Big Sam the Man U job I would expect him to win the league.

If you had the power to do so, I'd do everything I could possibly do to make that happen. And I do mean everything. The thought of Fat Sam on the Yernited sidelines , sporting a wireless bluetooth headset. I'd rape, murder and pillage to see that happen.

But he will never get that opportunity.

Tis a shame.

I do agree with that. It's a crying shame, although I doubt our reasons are the same.

Likewise if you give Redknapp the England job I would expect him to get to the semi-finals.

Ahhh yes, the irrefutable reasoning of an England fan's expectations.

Hopefully he gets that opportunity.

And a fitting end. Something we can both, undeniably agree on.

Aristotle is dead right. I mentioned it before, but look at who Guardiola learned from, same with any top manager. They were also intelligent people. John Terry has played under many top coaches, but he's a borderline inbred so none of that will have sunk in.

I think Scholes and Carra are the only people intelligent enough with the right education to make it anywhere. Lampard strikes me as a mouth breather, same with Gary Barry. Watch what happens with Sami, he's got all the attributes to make it at the top.

I think what we forget about capello and Sven is their qualifying record...
Excellent, almost flawless..

Where they came unstuck was is the tournament itself where perhaps you need a different approach.

There have always been managers who were great in cup competitions (venables for one) and they manage to create a momentum which carries a team in a tournament.

I think the FA have picked utterly the correct managers to qualify for tournaments but in turn the wrong ones to manage when the team gets there.

Obviously it's too much to expect Villa to win the league.

But it's not too much to expect England to win the Euros or at least have a chance of doing so.

It's not like you have to play Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Portugal home and away over a long season.

It's a knock-out competition.

We could beat any of those sides in a one-off game.

Yes we could, with a lot of luck and its one of the great things about football, anything can and will happen, but being realistic you have to say its very unlikely we would beat the likes of Spain, they can just turn it on and go up another gear when they want or need.
The odds would go up with a decent manager, Capello is a decent manager and its maybe right we have an outside chance with him, merely by virtue of being in the match, but the odds would go through the floor with the likes of twitchy. I think Rafa could do it, he showed he knows how to get the best of out a limited squad with the right tactics time and again in big games.

Switzerland beat Spain...

And?

Despite Switzerland having inferior players to England, the way they play and the style of football they play can hurt even the best of teams in the world if they're not switched on. Switzerland can actually keep the ball amoungst themselves for more then 5 mins. England cant, there play is far too rushed and they keep giving the ball away and giving the ball away to the likes of Spain or Germany is goin to land you in big trouble.

It's all relative no? For a nation that prides itself on being one of the biggest and the best, one major tournament and only one final is poor return no?

I guess so.

But I wouldn't say topping our group to qualify makes us shite.

If we didn't qualify then I could accept people calling us shite.

Oh in that case they should just give us the world fucking cup, we beat Switzerland they beat Spain, so thereforee we would beat Spain, we dont even need to play them, just give us the fucking cup.

Everyone saying Spain would batter us..

I bet they said Spain would batter Switzerland...

Just shows it can be done.

Spain are not unbeatable.

That was the first group game, all kinds going on with that, weight of expectation and nerves, you can bet if it was a knock out game later on in the competition Spain would of gone all out and battered them. In a quarter, semi or final can you really see Switzerland beating Spain? The odds you would get would be massive.

Being a KO competition evens out chances a bit, but when there are 3-4 teams out there who are consistently better than yours, chances are very, very slim.

To win the euro you need to beat at least 3 top euro teams in a row (quarter, semis, final - no crud there). Hard with England's side right now. Very hard without a reliable goalie and no good target man up-front.
