Its Ben Smith breaking it..

I wonder if it's a real "this is the replacement" story, or whether it will end up being just a "Van Gaal a possible target" story.

Wasn't Cruyff not happy with Van Gaal being a possible candidate for DoF at Ajax? As long as he kept his pants on, he could be quite an interesting candidate who wouldn't be against making the odd controversial decision against sacred cows in favour of younger talents. Also, I doubt we'd be making a Txiki bid for Begiristain for that position.

Cryuff and Van Gaal have a very long-running fued, don't they? Honestly, if we're interested in Cryuff I wouldn't put it past Van Gaal to declare an interest just because of that!

I bet you Cryuff's ego would mull over any offer. You're credited with modernising Barcelona, and with having the greatest Ajax team. ... You can just imagine him thinking "Yeah, fuck it, I want some credit for Liverpool winning stuff again 'n' all".

If I was a shopkeeper and I ordered my stockist to get the items in I wanted and they didn't sell, why would I fire the bloke who just did the negotiating?

Because the stockist agreed to pay £35 Million for a bag of cement ?

Cruyff is a very interesting shout.  That would be fascinating to watch.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the description "very interesting" is a good thing.  If it weren't someone at the very top of the game, it wouldn't be that interesting.

Tony doesn't say Cruyff is a candidate. They were impressed with the type of job he's doing.

Yes, the Suarez case was certainly emblematic of that!

It's a guilty pleasure, pressing F5 and enjoying the supposition and conjecture. It's like chicken popcorn.

Ruthless say some, reckless says I.

Whilst people are lining up to praise them for ruthlessly dismissing Comolli for last summer, they’re missing the wood from the trees. The idea that the DoF is perhaps the most long-term role at the football club, and also that it was recklessness on their part initially to hire Comolli in that role through sheer nepotism.

The DoF is a very long term role. We hired him in a strange way and we then release him after 18 months. After having done pretty much the opposite of what we intended to do (we overpaid and under-delivered). We didn't do our scouting very well there, did we?

Cruijff will never take any serious official position at any other club anymore, he didn't want to do it at Ajax even, but they forced him so he could be held accountable. Cruijff likes casual advsisor jobs at this point in his career, he doesn't want too many strings attached.
