Comolli and Bruckner leave by mutual consent
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:41:58 am »
Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool FC confirmed today that Director of Football Damien Comolli had left the Club by mutual consent.

Principal Owner John Henry said: "We are grateful for all of Damien's efforts on behalf of Liverpool and wish him all the best for the future."

Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner added: "The Club needs to move forward and we now have a huge game on Saturday.  It is important that everyone joins us in supporting the manager and gets behind Kenny and the team and focuses on a strong finish to the season."

Damien Comolli commented: "I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at Liverpool and am happy to move on from the Club and back to France for family reasons.  I wish the Club all the best for the future."

Liverpool sack Director of Football Damien Comolli as owners react to failed transfer policy and desperate run of results

Liverpool have sacked Director of Football Damien Comolli after the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, reviewed the club's failure in the transfer market that saw high profile and expensive acquisitions such as Andy Carroll contribute to a chastening season in the Premier League for Kenny Dalglish's side.    Comolli was appointed to the position of Director of Football Strategy at Anfield in November 2010, and given a remit to oversee the recruitment of players to the club.

His first major impact was to play a role in the January signings of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, for a British transfer record fee of £35m.   He became Director of Football in March 2011, effectively taking on many aspects of a chief executive's role, though focused solely on the business of playing side of the club.   He was pivotal in the signings of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Jose Enrique, Sebastian Coates and Craig Bellamy, though in all instances manager Kenny Dalglish had the final say in the deals.

The mixed success of those players, most notably Carroll but also Henderson, Adam and to a lesser extend Downing, appears to have cost him his job.   It is an extraordinary turn of events that sees a high profile member of the administration relieved of his job days before an FA Cup semi-final, against Everton rather than at the end of the season.
However an awful run of results that has left Liverpool closer to the relegation places than the top of the table in terms of points has seen the American owners act decisively.

Uhhhhhh.

So I guess that answer's a lot of questions as to who had the most sway over our transfer dealings.

That'll help our terrible form - As we all know, he gives the team talks as well as playing up front.

I wouldn't blame him. I'd blame the new tactics of Kenny and Steve Clarke or whoever. Why else have players turned bad who had brilliant seasons last year? Kuyt, Downing, Adam, not a coincidence.

Ruthless that.

Now it's fair to say that Comolli had a greater say than some thought in regards to last Summer.

This is incredibly bad timing and i can't believe from their previous self-controlled way of doing things that the owners can be so foolhardy to destabilise the team just before the FA Cup semifinal. Unless there was a blow out or something and COmolli reacted badly to criticism etc?

Question. Does this mean Kenny deals entirely with transfers for the time-being?

I kind of get why they are keen to get rid of him now and have someone else in charge of that side, so we can focus on potential transfers for the Summer and try and get them in early (before the Euro's).

I'd have to say, bit of a knee-jerk reaction when he evidently is not to blame alone.

However. our inability to sign a backup DMF to compete with Lucas, refresh our attack with a third striking option, the fact we bought Downing who isn't young so has little resale value etc. all doesn't weigh up to well for Commoli.

Our lack of quality in midfield and attack has really shown this season. Given the money we spent, we should have been packing a lot more.

I have to also say though that on paper a lot of these signings made sense. We need to also question Kenny who put faith in Adam and Henderson at the start of the season when he had veterans such as Maxi & Kuyt who were doing the business at his disposal. His man management of Carroll has been disgusting, his media handling of the Suarez debacle put the player before the club etc.

Wow, shocked if true. Usual policy when having DoF is his role is continuous whereas the manager's job is more likely to be unstable. Still, if this is the best way forward, then fine and if it came down to a choice, I'd prefer Kenny to remain but we still need to sort out what we're doing, whether Comolli is here or not.
