Genuine question this, with how long it took him to give it out, wouldn't human nature make you think "Give it not out, they'll review if they think it's out and we'll get the right decision in the end"

Yeah the whole thing looked really dodgy.

Agreed. But he’s always been trigger happy, which is why he’s not really up to it.

Should teams/players not get fined for appealing something that obviously wasn't out but con the umpire into giving it out? I know the final decision lies with the umpire but I'm guessing when a team are appealing as mad as they were then it may play a part in what the final decision is.

I also think umpires need to be more wise in those situations. He obviously didn't see/hear anything (as there was nothing to see or hear), so do the easy thing and side with the team that doesn't have a review. If the opposition are that convinced, they can review and justice will be done that way.

Spot. Something has been totally off/weird with this tournament. Glad I'm not the only one to have felt that.

The England-India match was the one that had me really miffed. It seemed utterly deliberate on their part not to attempt to chase that score. However, the events of today or yesterday have been relatively palatable. Williamson figured out early on that the pitch was sticky and sluggish and that chasing would be really difficult. Whereas, today it was high class bowling from England rather than lack of intent or shoddy batting from Australia that has proved the difference.

Honestly can't recall a decision that bad in cricket. Wasn't even close.

I do think DRS has probably elongated the careers of some poor umpires. Their bad decisions tend to have less meaning than previous so they get away with more.

The amount of them appealing in unison, they must have believed he hit it.

24 overs to go, 8 wickets in hand - scoring rate of 2 an over needed.

Even vs Australia we can't mess this up can we...

Spot. Something has been totally off/weird with this tournament. Glad I'm not the only one to have felt that.

I think there's a case to say that it's just what it's like playing in England with a lot of games being played in grounds that would normally only have 1 or 2 international matches, if any, in the summer.  We don't prepare roads like other countries and we probably don't prepare the "best" pitches for the softer kookaburra ball.

Teams often take time to get used to playing here, and in some cases even by the end of their tour they still aren't any the wiser.  Plenty of sides flew in a week or so before with no real preparation (due to the calendar and other commitments)

It's probably no different to how it usually is, but it just highlights the variation of playing here when you have 50 odd ODIs in a month rather than 10 or so spread out over the summer.

I agree. It's not as though he put his finger up straight away either, it took some time for him to do that. There was obviously some doubt. The same goes for the fielding team though. They appealed so collectively and convincingly but that shouldn't have been possible considering there was nothing there. That shouldn't be acceptable.

I always remember Surrey vs Lancashire in the early 90s. Chasing 240, Darren Bicknell went early, but then Stewart and Thorpe put on around 200, with Surrey needing 30-40 to win at 3rpo and 9 wickets left.

Agreed. But he’s always been trigger happy, which is why he’s not really up to it.

That's harsh. He was named umpire of the year in 2012 and 2018. It was a bad mistake but let's not malign his entire career.

Note James Boiling at the end. I got the official Ashes magazine that summer, the one with Chris Lewis in a sunhat sweeping the ball on the cover. One section was titled: "Spinners won't be winners", citing the historical truth that spinners don't tend to make a difference in Ashes series. One of the English spinners highlighted was Boiling, based on nothing. But for romantics, there was the English hope, the promising young legspinner Ian Salisbury. The Aussies had their own, this chap called Warne, who got taken apart by the Windies the previous year.
