The Soldier Song
« on: October 8, 2012, 04:53:06 pm »
Loyalists are we whose lives are pledged to Anfield,
We have come, [where from]
From the mighty Spion Kop
Sworn to be Red, we're loyal Liverpudlians,
We'll follow our team throughout the land.
Tonight we'll raise the red flag high
For Liverpool we live and die.
And as we march, eternal light,
We will chant a loyal song, Liverpool.

When does this date back to? It's an unusual twist mentioning loyalists on the Irish song?

Hope you don't mind SP - I've changed the words to those we learnt back then [mid '60's]

Royalists Loyalists are we whose lives are pledged to Liverpool Anfield,
We have come, [where from]
From the mighty Spion Kop [God Bless them]
Sworn to be Red, we're loyal Liverpudlians,
We'll follow our team throughout the land.
Tonight we'll raise the red flag high
For Liverpool we'll live and die.
And as we march through Europe, eternal light,
We'll singWe will chant the royalist a loyal song

When does this date back to? It's an unusual twist mentioning loyalists on the Irish song?

It was around '65/'66 shortly after "We Are The Men From The Anfield Spion Kop". Unlike "We Are The Men" which was sung at Anfield a lot at that time, the Royalist song was only ever sung in pubs and on coaches on away trips as far as I recall. It never really caught on.

God knows why it was 'Royalists' by the way - delusions of grandeur perhaps? Whatever, it was a shite song. A step too far following the brilliant double bill of "Oh I am A Liverpudlian" and "We Are the Men From The Anfield Spion Kop"

 :)

Great insight, thanks Timbo, so did any other English teams try a version of that around that time too?

It is Loyalists not Royalists.

As in a scouse reworking of the Irish national anthem of the same name?

We're on the long road maybe the wrong road. We're on the road to God knows where . We 're on the long road maybe the wrong road and altogether we don't care. North men , South men comrades an' all . From Old Swan , Huyton , Childwall , Sparrow Hall.  We're on the long road... maybe the wrong road... Singing our Liverpool songs.

Loyalists are we....

Thats's what me Da' sang .

I met on arl arse in Lyviv in May and we sang this too.
