Just checked that site mate & its requesting subscription to view, unless you have a link which bypasses it?

Also, real fascinating reading up on that 'Baralong affair' & agree it looks like it was a revenge for the sinking of the SS Arabic the previous day.
You can't imagine what those people endured to act in such a way.

Tsar, what link is that under as I can't find the Merchant Navy?

I have a long deceased Uncle from my mums side who was a chef on the Cunarders (I understand) back in the 30's  though he died just before the war.
The only pic I have of him is this (sorry for the state of it)....he's on the right.  Not sure what ship he was on at the time.
Look at that cake!!!  Anyone recognise the ship?

It's under the heading of 'Education & work' Gulley; hit that and it will offer you 'Merchant Navy & Maritime' just enter his name and whatever else you can.

It is a subs site mate but anyone with access could do the honours for you - or you could maybe get along to your library that has FMP and Ancestry for free if your a member.
I'm a lapsed FMP customer but they offered me a months access for a quid to try and rope me back in.

At first I was looking for a white ship,  then I realised, it's only all white, because thy haven't finished icing the bloody cake.  :D

If it's a white ship, could be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Empress_of_Canada_(1920)

I don't think the cake is an exact copy of a ship, but a stylised copy.

Three funnels seems to be quite rare at the time, so should narrow it down a bit.

Possibly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Imperator

Renamed R.M.S. Berengaria. retired from service in 1938

http://atlanticliners.com/hapag_home/imperator_home/

Or her sister ship, S.S. Bismarck (not the battleship)

Later renamed R.M.S. Majestic. -  White Star Lines Flagship. and largest ship in the world, at the time.  Retired from service in 1936

http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/WSL_Majestic.html

http://www.whitestarhistory.com/majestic2

Both ships were taken from Germany after WW1 as war reparations, and pressed into service  for the Cunard/White Star liner company, on the U.S transatlantic route.

There was a third ship in the series, S.S. Vaterland, which was claimed by the U.S.A.

The funnel you'd assume to honest, so it does seem to be a Cunarder.

Could well be the Queen Mary.

She was built in 1936, so the cake could be for her launch. etc.   Depending on the timeline of when the photo was taken, and if G's relative was still alive by then.

Cheers Richie, that's brilliant.

The name Berangaria rings a bell and I do wonder. Trouble is, none of my Aunties and Uncles are alive anymore to try and confirm it.

I did like this bit... In later years, Berengaria was used for discounted Prohibition-dodging cruises, which earned her the jocular nickname "Bargain-area".

Not too sure exactly when he died, I just know it was sometime before the outbreak of the 2nd WW, though I think one of my sisters has kept some kind of a record.
I'll try and find out.

Great that Brissy cheers.

Nor me Gulley, only ever seen one when she was moored up mid-river.

And how those watchmen put up with the smell/fumes from that coke's beyond me - probably the nastiest smell ever for me; always felt like it was doing me great harm.

What a lot of people don't realise is that this flagpole is a portion of one of the masts from the Great Eastern..

Not sure which one, there were seven according to here named after the days of the week. Be nice if it was Saturday..

I believe there's still a few chunks of her on the beach down Dingle way from when she was finally broken up.

I've always been lead to believe it was the topmast, The tallest one.  Which if counting them from left to right in that pic would make it the correct one(Thursday)

There's a pic about somewhere, that I saw a few years ago, of the mast/flagpole  coming up Everton Valley on the back of a horse drawn cart. ( circa 1906)

But this is an interesting aside.

What's strange, is in that photo she only has six masts.

I found this...

Used to go down there as a kid and play on the floating roadway.

Many a time I've got a 14C or a 19 back to Breck Road.

Yep. The bubbles.

Used to get the bus to and from school there, throughout the early 80s.

Whilst we have that picture up.

I think we've touched on this subject in the past, but can't remember when.

The end elevation of St.Georges hall, and the triangular pediment.    The pediment used to have a set of classical sculptures inside it.  I was always lead to believe that they were taken down for restoration purposes.

Presumably, a hundred years of weathering, plus any associated war time damage will of taken it's toll.

As they were taken down for 'safe keeping', I would presume they are either in the basements of St.Georges, or more likely in one of the storage depots of Liverpool Museum.

I'm sure we'd all love to see them back in place one day, although logic would dictate the cost to return them would be far too prohibitive.

As you can see from the last two photo's, they were removed sometime in the 1950s. Gone by 1957.

Anyone know their location?  Or anything more about them?

In here there is a guess it's likely lost now....

Sadly, Mr O'Brien believes it is yet another example of institutional vandalism.

Height of that ladder!
Not a fkin chance I would be as daft as the fella that's climbed up there!

Judging by the age of the photo, it's possible some of those lads had served on sailing ships where scaling such heights on what to us these days seems a flimsy ladder was just a normal day to day activity.

Though I remember seeing the office window cleaner gangs back in the early 60's as a kid doing similar stunts on their ladders.

The wooden ladders (this was in the days before lightweight aluminium extending ladders became cheaply available) were pushed around town on wheeled carts looking rather like this...

It looked terrifying.

In here there is a guess it's likely lost now....

Sadly, Mr O'Brien believes it is yet another example of institutional vandalism.

"It was broken up and used as hardcore, which in my opinion is equal to the Taliban blowing up all the statues of Buddha in Afghanistan

It would be nice to think there are some surviving parts dotted around the country in peoples gardens or even houses as ornaments, but identifying them as such would probably be quite some task.

I can only imagine that it was either destroyed when it was taken down, or that there are at least parts of it somewhere. I can't imagine someone coming about it in a basement somewhere and then deciding to break it up. Surely you'd rather put it into your garden or whatever?

That large chunks of it fell down before the took it off sounds like it was quite badly damaged, but on the pictures from 1950 it doesn't look too bad. I imagine in 1950 they were quite used to damaged buildings that were beyond repair and would just be demolished.

Talking of ladders, this shouldn't be in here because it's not Liverpool, but I was a bit shocked to see that this was still normal in the 70s... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4YFCJETmwI

Picture lifted from here.

Not a bad little sight that.

Many images there, that I've not seen before.   Just a pity that it's one and two line captions, and not a bit more expansive on the information side of things.
