My wife is bang into this.

I've therefore been subjected to it a few times and honestly, I can't stand it. I'm not sure what it is about it; the people, the format, the content, but it's not for me.

I must be missing something, like, because it seems to be incredibly popular as well.

Have been listening to The History of Rome by Mike Duncan lately, absolutely superb. It's great to hear it all in chronological order so you can understand how each thing led to the next.

Hadnt heard of that one...must give it a go.

Have you read Rubicon and Dyasty by Tom Holland?  Both very good.

I haven't mate, but looking at the blurb I think I'd love them so thanks for the tip, I'll have to check those out. I find the fall of the roman republic one of the most fascinating periods in history. So many exceptional leaders alive in a short space of time. I had already listened to Dan Carlin's excellent podcasts (Punic Nightmares, and Death Throes of the Republic),   but I'm enjoying this a lot too for filling in the gaps I have in Roman history as a whole.  If you do give it a listen, the start is a little slow because it was his first podcast and the early history of rome is quite mythical rather than historical, but after the sack of rome it really gets going nicely

I listened to that religiously years ago right to the end,i remember waiting in anticipation for the next episode every week.

The Punic wars on the Rome podcast with Hannibal and Carthage are amazing listening, also mentions a titbit of Hannibal and Scipio Africanus actually meeting i think in Greece (Hannibal was training an army) decades after the war ended at a party and both claiming they were the better military leader. ;D

That is my all time favourite podcast.

The History of WW2 with Ray Harris Jr which is also fantastic listen which started in 2010 i think and still going strong today with an episode every 2 weeks.

One fan of History Of Rome actually continued where the History of Rome podcast stopped with the Byzantine Empire which is up to episode 171 right now, (The History Of Byzantium) it's called.

I also loved that story about Scipio and Hannibal :D  Two incredible generals, without a doubt.

Glad to hear that the History Of Byzantium exists because otherwise I'd probably be quite gutted when I get to the end of this!

Cheers for that, definitely going to give it a try as work is particularly slow at the moment. I'm an absolute sucker for all things Ancient Rome, especially the rise and the fall, and I'm currently watching 'Rome' the TV series so this would be a nice addition.
Loving Everton's business this summer. Here's an early call - they finish above Liverpool this season.

Mike Duncan moved onto the Revolutions podcast which is good.

I also like https://thehistoryofengland.co.uk/ which is a guy in his shed giving English history from the dark ages (now up to henry 8th)

The first series was pretty funny because there was an innocence to it and it was a novelty. It's just not funny now as it's basically a commercial operation and a bit cynical generally. The dad in question undoubtedly is now writing to the audience, rather than with the 'innocence' he wrote the first one with.
No, not the case.

He wrote all the books before they started the podcast.. good knows why though...

It’s as much about friendship as anything else.  People coming together to talk about something absurd...

Some of these stories are amazing
How to do penetration tests on a clients network
How to use social engineering to gain information
The steps taken in govt hacking of a foreign network
How kids end up in trouble for hacking school systems and why they do it.

I find some of the stories fascinating

They have translated from Halmstads to Malmo, to Orebo to Neuchatel Xamax, to the Swiss national team, so I find the question insulting.

If you enjoyed Serial, assuming you listened to Season 1 (Adnan Syed / Hae Min Lee) then get onto S1 of Undisclosed where they deep dive into the case and uncover some unreal stuff/evidence. Adnan has since been granted a new trial off the back of their work.

Started listening to Bundyville the other day - https://www.npr.org/podcasts/606441988/bundyville?t=1539245788152

Quote
From Longreads and Oregon Public Broadcasting, "Bundyville" is a seven-part series chronicling the rise, fall and resurgence of the Bundy family, the armed uprisings they inspired and the fight over the future of the American West.

Pretty interesting and well produced.

Thanks i’ll listen to that 👍, I’ve listened to the whole of season 1, interesting that Adnan has a new trial, apparently Sky Atlantic are going to do something with it too.

S-Town, just finished that and literally days later still pondering it, it’s intriguing, it’s sad too, scouring lots of other stuff on the web about S-Town now, the team that do those podcasts are really good.

If you’re after something similar to those, then The Teacher’s Pet is very good. And the case the podcast is based on has come into the media in the last few weeks due to the podcast.

A high school teacher, former Aussie footballer, is married to Lynn and they have two kids. He has an affair with a pupil and moves her into the family home. A few weeks later the wife goes missing and is never heard from again - no body found either. It’s very interesting - really, really good.

I've been working through the back catalogue of Reply All which is really good. It's all just random stories about the internet and internet culture.

The episode Long Distance is all about how one of the journalists on the pod tracked down an internet scammer and ended up going to India to meet the scammer.

They themselves say not to bother with the first seven, or maybe eight, minces cos they weren't sure what it was yet. I still listened to the first couple but then was glad to have skipped ahead. It said it in the notes for the episode, so check maybe the eighth or ninth one. Maybe give the first few minutes of episode one a go, rthen skip ahead.

CrimeTown is great, season 1 is about the mob in Providence RI in the 70s and 80s. Candid interviews with guys who have done decades in prison for multiple murders, just listening to their voices, plus the boss music, it's like being plunged into a Scorsese movie.

Agree so wrong that he’s still locked up

There are a lot of addendum episodes and viewers questions and updates episodes but you don’t need to listen to them. I’d start off with the normal episodes eg Jays Day, Hae’s Day Etc

The production quality of the first 2-3 episodes isn’t the best but stick with it, they sort that out.
