What Podcasts do you listen to?
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:46:23 am »
After becoming a regular listener to the great award winning The Anfield Wrap i've decided to broaden my horizons of the Podcast world.

The official LFC podcast hosted by Macdowell is pretty good, I do enjoy listening to that, its a good way to sum up whats been happening over the weekend in terms of reaction and what not.

I've started to listen to the Guardians football podcast hosted by Jame Richardson, its not too bad, but nothing near The Anfield Wrap.

The same can be said about The Times The Game podcast hosted by Marcotti. Bearable but nothing to write home about.

I really enjoyed listening to the 10'o clock Live podcast, Very funny indeed, Carr was on form last week.

I've downloaded the Frank Skinner Podcast, but not heard it yet.

So go ahead a list and review your favourite or not so favourite podcasts.
What I love about this, and several other of Kenny's press conferences, is that he manages to say something to the effect of  'Shut the fuck up, you fucking helmets and don't fuck with me or my football club or I'll make you eat your own balls', without actually using th

Do be honest - I've never listed to a podcast, even though I have an ipod

Is it easy to do? And easy to delete when you're finished?
Conversion into the opposite - a fool who persists in his folly will become wise.

Yes, just as you download songs from iTunes, you do the same with Podcasts.

Deleting is easy too, just swipe the episode you want to delete and tap delete on your ipod. You have to manually delete it from your PC though.

Just Anfield Wrap and Guardian one, used to listen to Times one but found them all a bit self-satisfied so gave it up. Football Ramble was good for a while but went off it for no particular reason. Just not inclined. Theres only so many you can listen to on the one subject.

Football wise I only listen to The Anfield Wrap these days, used to listen to the Guardian one but not anymore.

My favourite podcast at the minute
WTF with Marc Maron - Marc is an American stand up, his show is all about having interesting conversations with people in the comedy business about their lives. He's had everyone on from Conan to Louis CK(a must listen) to Stewart Lee to Ben Stiller and countless other people behind the scenes on shows/films and the like. Great listen if you like your comedy

Other notable mentions – Smodcast, Uhh Yeah Dude, Adam & Joe podcasts(not on the air at the moment but worth getting the old ones) and of course The Ricky Gervais podcasts but I’d recommend getting the old XFM shows and working your way upto the Podcasts.

World Football Phone-in should be top of any semi-intelligent football fan's list of listens.

I do like the Frank Skinner pod, actually I'm gonna listen to the latest now over lunch. I do find some of the female comedians he gets to fill in abit annoying though. The latest one hasn’t been great. Skinner is always on top form though.

Just The Anfield Wrap at the moment, but have to say I do enjoy looking forward to listening to a weekly episode.

Anyone recommend any other decent podcasts out there?

The Ricky Gervais ones are brilliant, though as stated, the first 2 XFM series are some of the best comic efforts I've see heard or seen.

Defected in the house, Resident Advisor,  Infinite Monkey Cage,  and of course the Anfield Wrap.

Yeah I have done the Gervais ones it's a shame he doesn't do anything new now.  60% of his stuff is recycled from XFM.  For shame.

I used to really like Gamerdork but when they got the new fella from Brighton on it fell to bits, in my opinion.  I loved it around the time Killzone 2 was released.

ESPNsoccernet Press Pass is one I haven't seen mentioned that I enjoy. It comes out daily.

In addition to that, here are the other footie podcasts I download:
  • Football Weekly from the Guardian
  • The Game from the Times
  • The Anfield Wrap (it's like listening to another language for us Yanks)  :)
  • World Football Phone In
If you have an Android or Iphone, check out an app called Pocket Casts. It's a paid app (I paid $2.99 US) that downloads podcasts you subscribe to directly to your mobile phone. No need to worry about hooking up to iTunes, it just shows up on your phone.  The app is cool as shit and I use it non-stop.

I can't remember the last time I listened to radio. These football podcast make the commute to work tolerable.

WTF with Marc Maron - Bi-weekly independent podcast. Maron is a grandaddy of the NY alternative comedy scene who never really made it big, until he sat down in his garage and started talking to his peers.  It's a podcast about funny people that is often times miles from being funny, but that beautifully captures the essence of who Maron and his guests truly are. First podcast I download every week.

This American Life - Weekly podcast, originally from WBEZ Chicago.  Ira Glass and his gang of storytelling nerds choose a theme and compile a set of interviews and fictional or non-fictional short stories to (loosely) explore that theme.  I've been introduced to a lot of great writers through that show.  On the occasions when the show is dedicated to a single story, the show's take is often refreshingly objective and inquisitive.  Also, for a weekly podcast, their themes are often surprisingly ahead of the curb.

RadioLab - Weekly podcast, from WNYC. This is like This America Life, but exclusively dedicated to science.

Kermode and Mayo's Film Review - Weekly podcast, BBC Radio 5.  The good doctors discuss the UK box office top 10 and the films released in the UK that week.

The Moth - Independent weekly podcast. The Moth is an organization putting on a series of storytelling shows across the US (they started in NY), inviting celebrities and regular folks alike to tell a story on stage.  Each week, they release one or two stories from their huge vault of stories.  They can be hit and miss, but there are a lot more hits than misses.

Risk - Independent (bi-)weekly podcast.  In many ways, this is like The Moth but on drugs and with a lot more sex.  Kevin Allison is an ex-member of The State, an unfunny US-based comedy group that made it big in the 90's.  He's not exactly funny, but he's a good storyteller and he's created, participated and hosted this show for the last couple of years, based on the the theme of telling stories "you never thought you'd dare to share".  Like The Moth, it can be hit-or-miss because it's based on people telling stories, and some will be much more compelling than others, but overall it's well worth it.  Some truly screwed up stories in there.

That's about it really. I used to listen to the Football Ramble religiously as well (and still do occasionally) but I went off it a bit during the Suarez/Evra stuff as a result of some of the comments on there. Generally it's quite amusing, but sometimes some of the comments are a little pretentious. Maybe i'm just touchy.

Also, as has been mentioned, the Ricky Gervais stuff is quality. Massive shame he (and Steve and Karl) hasn't done anything new in a good while.

Listened to World Football Phone in over the weekend......pretty good albeit a bit too long.

Anything over an hour gets too much. I've noticed what ever gets discussed ends up on Tim Vickery's blog on the beeb anyway.

Friday Night Live is excellent I think. Really enjoy that.

Frank Skinner is a bit slow, but i'll give it another download.

Downloaded the Guardian's technology podcast, need to download a couple of episodes more to make my mind up on that.
