On The Snuts, I've listened to the new album twice now through friend recommendations and it's alright. A bit indie landfill to me, kind of on a similar level to Catfish and the Bottlemen - decent and worth a listen but ultimately pretty forgettable.

To be honest, pretty much everything sounds like that to me now, after hearing Black Midi's latest effort.

Good evening fellow miserable bastards.

This is from a reissue that came out last month from 1979 - the reissue is already going for daft sums on discogs, possibly because of this tune: 'EGYPT ROCK'

https://www.youtube.com/v/0lbDssO_wr0?t=1063

Disclaimer: Taken me a fucken age to find this and link it so I hope it works, but the youtube tracklisting of the album is all over the shop. But that Egypt Rock tune sticks it in the back of the net.

BOLLOCKS. DOESN'T WORK... fast forward to 17:39. You'll thank me... OK, you won't.

Self Esteem's (that's Rebecca Lucy Taylor of Slow Club) 'I Do This All the Time' - from the forthcoming second album, of the same name - is going to get played a lot on the radio:

Steve Cobby is great and has been for a long time.

His latest album "I've Loved You All My Life" is a treat, especially for fans of ambient, downtempo with a dash of late era Talk Talk for good measure.

Highly recommended.

Local favourites The Coral have announced the release of their eight/tenth (depends how you regard two of them!) album, with double-album Coral Island due for release on Friday 30th April.

Looking forward to popping into town to pick The Coral's new one up a little later today - a couple more tracks here for anyone else considering it:

Truly hip, cool, in-touch, and absolutely with it in the spring of 2021, I've bought tickets to see both Shed Seven and The Charlatans in the last 12 hours or so - both within a few days of each other in Liverpool this December).

Haha, got one for Shed Seven myself. Supported by some sort of venture by Mark Morriss, Chris Helme and Nigel Clark.

Might go in a bucket hat and Umbro coat and go full 90’s.

Teenage Fanclub's new album has also just popped up my Bandcamp, as I was sat awaiting it's arrival in the post today/tomorrow. Endless Arcade is their 11th, and their first without founder-member Gerard Love.

'Home' was the lead single, and has been knocking about for about six months:

I've meant to pick up Grand Prix for years, given that 'Sparky's Dream' always sounds so fantastic when it crops up (pretty often) on the radio. 2021 seems to be the year I'm getting into bands who are a long way into their career & have sizeable back-catalogues (I should have done this last year really, when there was fuck all to do...).

-----

Bandcamp, by the way - continuing to be brilliant. Bandcamp Friday's (when they waive their own fees) are going to carry on for at least the next few months, and the release-day digital download when you pre-order even in physical formats is always an appreciated touch.

Yes, definitely get Grand Prix - it's a great album as are Bandwagonesque and Songs from Northern Britain if you also don't have them. One of my favourite bands from the 90s - always preferred them to their Britpop contemporaries - so I will give the new TFC album a go. The single sounds OK, but seeing someone else on bass just looks wrong. Gerard Love wrote some of their best tunes, including Sparky's Dream so will be interesting to see how they have filled that Gerard-shaped hole.

It was good but a bit of a disappointment that it wasn't better considering it's been about 4 or 5 years since their last one. A few really good songs but quite a few album fillers.

They've replaced him with Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.

If you're going to get a sub, pretty hard to beat someone of his quality!

Interested to have a listen to this. Haven't really listened to much of the Fannies since 1997.

Ah, OK, Euros Childs plus some bloke on the bass with a 70s porno 'tache. Euros Childs was the support act last time I saw them at Shepherd's Bush a few years back. It does sound good on paper, but then again I was one of the people who thought Balotelli would be a good replacement for Suarez, so what do I know?!

Really liking the new Royal Blood album. Added a bit more synth to fatten out the sound, some great riffs and eminently danceable while doing the washing up (which is an important factor to me).

Also liking the new Manchester Orchestra album released yesterday as well. Best thing they’ve done since Means Everything to Nothing

Thrilled with the new Royal Blood album. Honestly, I think it's their best album yet, which I know is a huge statement considering how good their self-titled debut is, but the little sprinklings of dance-rock and disco scattered throughout just does it for me.

A really impressive piece of work, this. Haven't really kept up with them in recent years despite them being one of the few indie bands I got into back in the day, but I've really enjoyed this album the couple of times I've heard it thus far. Am looking forward to listening to the Dinosaur Jr one as well, they almost always seem to do good stuff. New Bonnie Prince Billy/Matt Sweeney could be good too, loved the first one, even though it must be dead old by now cos I can remember listening to it in university.

I've been listening to Ghetts' album quite a lot, it's really good. Had Pa Salieu's album from last year on the heaviest of rotations recently though, there's some truly exceptional tracks on there even though much of the time I'm not sure what he's on about (gang stuff in Coventry mostly, I think, though there seems to be some non-gang stuff too as far as I can work out). Ridiculously versatile voice though, and some of the most flat out menacing, unsettling (but in a good way) music I've ever heard. UK hip hop's in a really good place right now I think, there are some very talented young men and women kicking about making some really interesting music.

RAWK ALBUM OF THE FIRST THIRD OF 2021

So in a 4 month period of no football ( what your still hanging in there? Well done) Music provides. Been a pretty decent one for me apart from this year’s releases got me hands on some ace compilations ( Global music not K-Tel ’20 best of Madchester’) but for this year first third these have been the gems for me.

Madlib- ‘Sound Ancestors'

I’m familiar with the style if not the work of Mr.Madlib a fascinating mix of samples and beats given a nice polish by Mr. Four Tet

Bicep – Isles

Electro/techno…don’t know what labels apply anymore…but has nice mix of euphoria and melancholy…good for a listen not just banging tunes

Altin Gun -Yol

A fine 80’s style pop groove with middle eastern vibes by everyones favorite Anatolian/Dutch Trad – Psych group

Floating Points & Pharaoh Sanders - Promises

Late to this as only got me hands on vinyl copy last week but a beautiful film soundtrack vibe piece of music…stunning.

And the winner is….

EL Michael Affair – Yeti Season

An absolute gem of a record that is….hard to pigeon hole..try 80’s American TV themes mixed with Bollywood vibes and RnB and ..er!...best listen and make your own mind up….great stuff and different.

Feel free to recc' yours

RAWK ALBUM OF THE FIRST THIRD OF 2021

I'll add some of mine, since you invited it ;D

Yasmin Williams - Urban Driftwood

Meditative acoustic instrumentals from virtuosic guitarist Yasmin Williams, a beautiful listen on a Sunday, or by a river, or in a park or in that lovely evening light (when it's not fucking hailing it down)

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds - Swing From The Sean Delear EP

Really in it for the side-long penultimate track 'He Walked In', a kind of sleazy noir masterpiece story song that slinks with horns and twangs along for 14 gorgeous minutes.

Bill Mackay & Nathan Bowles - Keys

Banjo-led instrumentals from up in some mountains somewhere, probably

Cassandra Jenkins - An Overview On Phenomenal Nature

Lovely thoughtful folkish tunes from ex-member of David Berman's Purple Mountains touring band-that-sadly-never-got-to-tour

Chuck Johnson - The Cinder Grove

Pedal steel guitarist follows his brilliant 'Balsams' album with another LP of glowing slide guitar instrumentals

Fred Neil - 38 MacDougal

Never enough released in the man's lifetime, so this rough recording from the Greenwich Village years is a treasure

Jim Ghedi - In The Furrows of Common Place

Talented Yorkshire folk guitarist gets a bit more vocal on this one - though my favourite is the towering strings of 'Mytholm'

MF Tomlinson - Strange Time

Acid-folk lockdown album, lovely listen, feels like it has moss on it.

Mia Doi Todd - Music Life

Title track features Jeff Parker, a brilliant treatise on the perils fo being a musician. Been a fan since her LP 'Cosmic Ocean Ship' maybe 10 years ago, and glad to hear her sounding as good as ever on this new one.

Nashville Ambient Ensemble - Cerulean

Erm, I listen to a lot of ambient pedal steel guitar music. This is a good example. Drift off to this on the reg.

New Bums - Last Time I Saw Grace

Still processing this one but enjoyed what I've heard.

Also:

New Chemical Brothers single was great.

Lots of brilliant compilations, my favourite still being 'Silk Road: Journey of the Armenian Diaspora 1971-1982', a disco-funk gem. Also worth a listen: 'How the River Ganges Flows: Sublime Masterpieces of Indian Violin, 1933-1952', 'Heisei No Oto: Japanese Left-field Pop from the CD Age, 1989-1996', and Neil Young's 'Archives Vol.2' which hits the Doom Trilogy and therefore my favourite period in NY history.

Many great reissues - Willie Dunn's Native Canadian Indian/Scottish folk 'Creation Never Sleeps, Creation Never Dies' being a big winner. Also the debut LP from Beachwood Sparks gets a second disc of rarities that for me far outstrips the original album.

Having said that, reckon I've listened to Fela Kuti more than anyone else this year as the dude is eternal groove personified. None more righteous.

Also rediscovered Kevin Ayers' 'Bananamour', a real beauty.

Some more new stuff for the list:

Ryley Walker - gets better with every listen and great to see him clean / sober. Some of the press he did for the release was pretty harrowing.

Black Country, New Road - was obsessed when it came out. Still sounded really fresh when I went back to it at weekend.

Cory Hanson - the lead singer of Wand. Cosmic Americana essentially.

On older stuff, I have listening to loads of Can following the reissue series, The Nightingales after watching King Rocker , Willie Dunn Comp (as Sam said), Neil Young recent live albums and getting into Tortoise too.

The Levitation Sessions by Osees and Alex Maas are all great too.

I would hope it does still sound fresh when it's only a few months old! (That said, a couple of the songs have been knocking around for a while.)

It's a funny one for me. There are bits of it I really like (Science Fair is great), but quite a lot of it does nothing for me. They're a band I want to like more than I actually do. Have a feeling I'd enjoy seeing them live though.

Keep seeing this in my local store, but I'm an odd one and I feel like if I bought the set most of it would pass me buy (as opposed to buying them one-by-one and savouring them a bit more...even though I'll probably never actually get round to that ;D):

A really impressive piece of work, this. Haven't really kept up with them in recent years despite them being one of the few indie bands I got into back in the day, but I've really enjoyed this album the couple of times I've heard it thus far. Am looking forward to listening to the Dinosaur Jr one as well, they almost always seem to do good stuff.

New Dinosaur Jr, The Coral, and Teenage Fanclub albums in the last couple of weeks have made for some really enjoyable listening - all really catchy, but without having too many sharp edges...definitely earmarked as future hangover listening!

Popping into town later today, so will pick it up. Also looking forward to giving Squid's debut album - Bright Green Field - a listen...today's a Bandcamp Friday, so I'll likely go CD & instant download with that one.

Realising I've used that gif multiple times this year already in relation to Weezer. Cringe.

I've already listened to it a few times through. It's really solid. An outstanding debut. Not quite as spectacular as I was expecting, perhaps, but still going to be a strong contender for album of the year.

There are some absolute bangers (not just the singles), but there are also several 'album tracks', which is not to say fillers, more that they're ones to sit down and appreciate, rather than ones that will get you up and dancing.

Narrator is the stand-out track for its scope and complexity, but there are a few others that I reckon might get properly under my skin after a few more listens. Boy Racers is a proper WTF listening experience.

ETA: if you're going on Bandcamp, get yourself a ticket for their live album launch synth jam party, which is streaming from 6pm this evening. Should be well worth it.

Have you got more than one person writing your posts?!? That's a wild ride ;D :P Decent, amazing, you had higher hopes, but could be one of the best of the year...!

Nice one for the link - I'm actually out 4-6pm and I doubt I'd catch it, but I'll probably look to get to their Manchester gig later in the year (just looked and christ they've a busy year planned!).

Ha! OK... well, I think what I'm trying to say is that there's been an awful lot of hype in the build up to the album being released, and I'm just trying to temper some of that by not coming across like an over-excited 5yo now that I've actually heard it. (The NME review, for example, is a bit cringey in its excessive enthusiasm.)
ETA: plus I'm already familiar with over half of the album (Narrator, Paddling, Pamphlets have been singles, and I know GSK and Documentary Film Maker from live performances), so it's not all new to me, which possibly lessens the impact slightly.

But it is a brilliant album by any standards, and yes, I don't think it's overstating it to say it will be among the contenders for album of the year.

Great list there Sam. The New Bums record is sensational and fucking hilarious. Six Organs' new one drops next month and is a ridiculous departure, even by Ben Chasny's standards.

Couple of bits that have been taking my fancy this year which I've written about (feel free to ignore and tell me to fuck off of course :D):

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage: http://sun-13.com/2021/03/02/nick-cave-warren-ellis-carnage-the-understanding-of-life-and-death/

Think it's better than than Ghosteen...

Mess Esque - Dream 12: http://sun-13.com/2021/05/05/mess-esque-dream-12-the-essence-of-something-special/

One for Chip and Filler - it's big Mick from the Dirty Three's new project

Chris Corsano and Bill Orcutt - Made Out of Sound: http://sun-13.com/2021/05/07/chris-corsano-bill-orcutt-made-out-of-sound-musicianship-at-its-peak/

See the above - think you'll dig this, too, Sam.

Andy Stott - Never the Right Time: http://sun-13.com/2021/04/20/andy-stott-never-the-right-time-a-package-of-broody-sound-collages/

Reckon this is up your street, FB. Glitchy tech-house with a splash of pop.

Big Brave - Vital: http://sun-13.com/2021/04/23/purity-rising-in-conversation-with-bigbraves-robin-wattie/

My metal album of the year (appreciate it may fall on deaf ears here but thought I'd share none the less) - Filler: Suuuuun O))) vibes, sir.

The Armed - Ultrapop: http://sun-13.com/2021/04/16/the-armed-ultrapop-a-museum-of-ideas/

This is pretty off-the-wall - like a noise-rock opera. You'll either love it or hate it.

Matt Christensen: Various: http://sun-13.com/2021/04/19/hello-body-an-introduction-into-the-world-of-matt-christensen/

Also the lead singer from the incredible Zelienople, this guy is as prolific as Richard Dawson. 12 quid for his full discography on Bandcamp. Up your street, Nick!

New Iceage album sounding promising on first listen. New FACS later this month, as well.
