Disintegration is a work of art, start to finish. Also beautiful, I think backstory can play a lot on our emotional response and interpretation of songs - Biffy Clyro's 'Folding Stars' from The Puzzle is about the death of the lead singer's mother, him coping with her final months and how he now struggles with the disconnect from the rest of his family without the anchor of his mother - what this means for his life going forward and whether he can or can't draw meaning given what's happened.

I've got the Lorraine Ellison version, which is great but just listened to the Walker Brothers version.

Fantastic!

Pink Floyd: Vera

I find When The Tigers Broke Free brings a lump to the throat - just the visceral emotion conveyed (not least due it being about the death of his own father)

The Gunner's Dream is also emotive

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Last Kiss - One of those Death by car crash songs, supposedly based on real car crashes and deaths - originally written and recorded by Wayne Cochran and successfully covered by Pearl Jam

I lifted her head, she looked at me and said
"Hold me darling, just a little while"
I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love, that I knew I had missed
And now she's gone, even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life that night
Oh, where oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

The late, great John Prine had several songs that tapped into the folk/country well of heartbreak.

A few off the top of my head ...

Lennon/Plastic Ono Band - Mother
Lou Reed - The Kids
Tom Waits - On The Nickel
Daniel Johnston - Story Of An Artist
Van Morrison - TB Sheets

(I bet most of them feature in the 'talentless singers' thread but hey ho... as if technique and singing style ever mattered over the artifice-free purity and honesty of heartfelt emotion.  ;D )

ub40 - don't break my heart

But I`m giving you my heart
Go on take it
Please be careful not to break it
Just remember it`s the only one I`ve got
It`s the only one I've got

You really should have included the two lines before this:

Quote
You shoot me down in flames
You put me down a lot

In addition to my earlier posts picking 2 Buckley tunes I'd like to add:

Into My Arms - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
For Emma - Bon Iver
Why Go? - Faithless
Waiting (Reprise) George Michael
Adore - Prince
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

I'd class that about as a love song no? Or at least as close as Nick Cave would come to one!

I think anything Nick Cave has put out post-personal tragedy always has that tinge of heartbreak to it. I personally always think about his loss when I hear anything he's done.

Keaton Henson's 'Lying to You' is brilliant, raw and horrid. I think many of us have had a relationship that we've clung on to despite knowing deep down you're settling and it's not quite right - that you know how unfair you're being but you stay anyway.

Mine is Pearl Jams - Just Breathe

Just happened to be the very last song me and Tracy listened to together on the day she passed away, playing the album in the car.

Played it at her funeral....... and I've just found out it still upsets me

Man, what a tune. What a fucking song. You can feel the pain. "What a wicked thing to say, you never felt that way. What a wick thing to do, to let me dream of you." If. you've been there, you've felt it and when you hear that lyric you feel it all over again.

This world is only gonna break your heart, indeed.

The Cure are my favourite band, but they're in a weird spot I think - generally far more well-known and regarded outside of the UK. When they did that televised Glastonbury set in 2019, my dad (born 1953) sent me a message that he'd "never realised how many great songs they'd done". When we were going through his LPs last year after he died though, I found copies of Three Imaginary Boys and Pornography.

With that out of the way, I found this a few years ago and keep coming back to it. The band never released an album, this is a B side from a 12" single.

My favourite Taylor Swift song - All Too Well

https://youtu.be/Fd_AtH0yVqU

Actually there is a whole Taylor Swift genre here if you like that one!

Last Kiss
Exile
White Horse
Soon You’ll Get Better
Illicit Affairs
Evermore
Tolerate It
My Tears Ricochet
You All Over Me

1,3 and 9 of this list are all older songs. You All Over Me (9) was an unreleased track from Fearless that just got released this year with the re-release of Fearless. And it’s stunning. How can she keep that back for so many years!?

I am possibly missing some glaringly obvious ones but this is a great playlist idea which I am going to do tonight!

Bruce Springsteen - Moonlight Motel

The closer on the Western Stars album from 2019. This tune and this album stands up alongside anything he has ever done. The lyrics, storytelling and songwriting on this late career masterpiece still takes my breath away over 2 years later and i still listen to it at least a couple of times a week. It baffles me how he comes up with this level of art 50 years down the road. This song is heartbraking and the outstanding vocal matched with the sense of loss and grief makes for a real emotional punch to the gut.
