Are we any good at it in England stroke Britain? Writing a sad one? Don't we always revert to humour? You could try the Smiths, but there's far too much wit going on usually - 'Suffer Little Children' would be the first go to recording tho. Am strumming through all my recent listens on Spotify and literally can't find one Brit who I'd suggest doing a proper good sad song. America has so so many! Joy Division don't write sad songs really. I'll think on't.

Doris Duke's 'I'm A Loser' LP (1969) is American - but beginning to end, even through the happiness, is a story being told - and it's magical. I could pull out a song, but it's a beginning to end type caper this LP.

I can't listen to it anymore, It was strangely the last song me and Tracy listen to together in the car.

I had it played at her funeral.

It breaks my heart.

Exactly my point!  :P I've never found Wish You Were Here a sad song for instance. Sure, it's moving etc, (and a great song) but it's also uplifting and celebratory at the same time. To me a sad song is something like Nina Simone's 'The Other Woman' - particularly the version sang at Town Hall in 1959. Her whole oeuvre is infused with a sense of melancholy of course, and even here, when she's confident that her husband will always return to her - when she's being celebratory and victorious and strong at the end of the song,  'She will always cry herself to sleep' - that's the saddest part. She was simply incredible. On the other side of the story, is Doris Duke's 'The Other Woman' - same title, totally different song. She's the woman having the affair -

To the other woman
I'm the other woman
And the other woman is his wife

Everybody calls me stupid
For playing second fiddle
At least I know I'm number two

That whole album, 'I'm A Loser', is a sad album. Some find it depressing. Have to say I don't.

So many names, Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen (tho he too is swimming with wit, and self depreciating humour), Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Antony & The Johnson's electrifying 'Hope There's Someone', all those Blues artists - hundreds to choose from - all American.

Woke up this morning and slipped on The House of Love's debut LP - one or two in that LP, but I don't know if any one track really counts as sad. 'Man To Child' possibly.

Will check out one or two of those choices of yours that I don't know, or need reminding of. Except Sting. Oof.

On first reflection that seems to be a great shout F.

As you say there seems to be an innate compulsion to soften the blow with irony or humour that prevents the full heartache from being laid bare.

But we may be wrong.

Maybe there are some. Gonna wrack what's left of my brains.

I wish coming up with those had been more difficult, but such is my chequered romantic past  :P I read the OP as Raph feeling some ache and wanting to listen to some sad songs and those are some of the ones I've wallowed in, though thankfully I don't do it anymore as I couldn't be arsed.

Noah & The Whale - The First Days of Spring got me through some shit.

Some really beautiful music on there, a mixture of just heartbreak and also hope.

Blue Skies is a wonderful song of hope, and if you want to feel endlessly sad try My Door Is Always Open or I Have Nothing.
