You know what mate,i listen to some of the most depressing stuff you'll ever hear .but you'll be hard pushed to find a more postive lad.

same with the likes of anyone who listens to this kinda stuff IMO

I find its usually the lads/gals who find emotion in music that sounds depressing rather than just the uptempo/High Bpms  that are the ones with a more postive outlook  in life...,

But thats just me :P

Not just you mate - almost everybody I know who's into that stuff is a little bit 'enlightened' if that makes sense. :)

Some top stuff on here guys - much appreciated. I'll have to get some time to find them. I dug out some old stuff this morning and it's on the ipod - superb. It made me think though - we had hip hop, then we had house, then we had acid house, and we had native tongues/daisy age/laid back hip hop... and then we had ambient house... and then drum and bass... and then the Bristol sound and so-called Trip Hop... and then Big Beat... but in reality it all melds into one and the best mixes for me are the ones that throw all that in together and then some real left field stuff from comedy and drama and porn and mainstream movies and whatever else, and from all kinds of other genres, and leaves you with a good hour's listening that just blows your mind away.

Anyway blah blah. One other thing - what kind of earphones do you guys use out of interest? I think it's safe to say we're all bassheads.

These are my monitors and they're maybe the best investment I've made in any gadget in recent years.

i like the big bose cans.  the smaller ones don't screen your whole ear off and i want that hermetically sealed vibe particularly on long haul flights:

A guy I worked with last year had those. No good for the daily commute though. The monitors are custom fitted to your inner ear (you go and get an impression taken at a hearing aid shop) and they mould them out of acrylic so you get no background noise (speshly if you use hearing aid cream) and it delivers the noise right in your ear canal so your volume's down at close to the lowest setting. Anyway, blah blah. They've gone out of business now I think but they were £100 with a good discount deal when the US dollar was 2 to 1 with the pound... ah the good old days 9 or 10 months ago eh?

tell me about it.  i'm going to japan in april but of course the pound has been in free fall since i booked our flights so it will be twice as expensive as the last time i went and that was already eye watering.  bah.  we will just have to fill our suitcases with tins of baked beans :)

They're adding a 'commentary' disc or something - sounds daft to me but it'd be interesting to see if they throw in some extras.

Here's one for some of you - a Blackalicious track called "Changes". I've heard it on the Herbaliser Solid Steel mix but I've never managed to track it down... anyone seen that?

Changes is quite like "Shallow Days" in vibe terms - very downtempo and melancholy/thoughtful and just plain great. PM me your address mate and I'm gonna bung the files on I'm talking about.

With regards to 4Hero, I got into them in about 2000 and they blew me away. I absolutely love what they do, but for me their finest achievement was The Two Pages Album, which was choc-full of organic, stellar samples. A lot of it sounds other worldly, in parts tribal, downtempo and definitely slightly syanesthetic in its make-up.

I think it's a startling album personally...

Quite a few of my first few purchases on vinyl.were the likes of Mr Kirks Nightmare,Cooking Up Ya Brain,Time To Get Ill,burning  & Wheres The Boy etc by them.

Its mad to see how they've progressed over the years..going from Altern 8/Manix type rave sounds. to the compositions they're bring out now !

since blackalicious has already been mentioned, here's another Quannum Project - Lateef and Chief X-Cel as The Maroons, not to be confused with Moron 5 . Highly recommended album.

Very little understanding of musical genres displayed in this thread. Most of the acts mentioned are either electronica (e.g. Vibert, Four Tet, Wagon Christ) or instrumental hip-hop (DJ Shadow etc). Not having a go at anyone, just saying.  :wave

Trip hop can be put in the electronica downtempo(even fast) and breakbeat genres.its sample based and electronic sounding music.when i was a kid trip hop was the likes of Dust Brothers chemiclal beats or That Petrol Emotions Hey Venus remix.it takes its influences from a lot of genres and tends to have a moody sound/style..

All been mentioned. There are actualy very few trip hop acts. They basically have to be from Bristol to qualify for that title, IMO.

My fault for the thread title then... I meant 'classic trip hop-esque albums to smoke a biffter to' :)

God like genius from Boards of Canada. I can confirm, having had a pint with them, that they've definitely been to Bristol. :)
