Thanks for the good work  :wave

The biggest thing from the Q&A is the commitment to youth and the two guys there.  Excellent.  He did not give away much else.  Let's see how they proceed.

Edit:  And, yes, thanks, Mr Henry.

Thanks Kev, brilliant work and I'm very proud one of the questions was my own (No.10).

This has been a brilliant Rawk initiative and again thank you Mr. Henry for taking the time to interact with us directly.

There are likely to be some players that will not be enamoured with the long term approach and we may well see some departures that will be hard to take. If that happens then it really will be a testing point for the owner - fan relationship.

It all sounds good but I just hope that they are trying to get the best we can out of this season,. With the right decisions made there is no reason why we shouldn't at least challenge for a CL place.

My only small tinge of unhappiness (and it is just a small tinge of unhappiness) is that they have re-branded to Fenway Sports Group. It makes me feel we are a subsidiary of a baseball park rather than an important part of a global sports business. I know we are important, but I have a uneasy feeling of being the ugly sister. Ok, maybe not the ugly sister, maybe someone like Danii Minogue.  Lovely as she is, she ain't Kylie.

I also know it's just a name, but I think I preferred NESV.

It is but one small critique in an otherwise very happy read.

I wonder if that was done to placate all the Red Sox fans who were worrying that their involvement in Liverpool may detract from the work they're doing over there.

Great interveiw, that cheered me up on a dreary Monday.

When I started reading the interview it was nothing but grey clouds and drizzle outside. As I look out of the window now the sun's shining with clear blue sky and not a cloud to be seen. I'm taking this as a sign from above that good times are going to return.

Thanks and respect to all involved in making this happen.

All this talk of youth, financial fair play rules, a quiet January suggests the days of marquee signings will never return.  Just marquee departures it seems.

Unlikely, I think. They spend a fortune on baseball players. They're usually #2 of 30 teams, and have never been out of the top 6 spenders since taking over.

Very encouraged by the answers to questions 14 and 16 in light of this: http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=266413.0
I read your post (fantastic, as usual) just before this interview, and I was thinking the same. Very encouraging indeed.

What we've had in recent years are young players with potential who were signed by an astute manager who then turned them into Marquee players.

Man Utd have also made an art form out of signing decent kids who if they didn't make it there were sold on to help fund their bigger signings.

I agree. And the Liverppol of olld had a great tradition of buying young and emerging talent in the 70's and 80's. When/if you cash in your chips is always an inexact science, but it is a strategy which reflects where we are right now.

The big issue for us the fans in the short term is who will make the decision to replace Hodgson, Comolli?

Most likely, the as yet unappointed CEO, in conjunction with a further reformed board.

Roy's around for a while yet i guess. If he's still here in January i'd expect the chequebook to only open slightly.

Eh? Seriously? How long have they been here?

You conveniently left off the end of my setence, here, let me help you with that.
"and is not looking to invest in the first team this January. "

Hodgson is what he is, an average manager moaning about lacking players, money and anything else he can grab hold of.  So, it's only going to end one way if he remains and is given no resources to try and change personnel.
If Mr Henry was willing to back Hodgson in the transfer market it's dangerous because Hodgson is a bit of a fucking maverick right now, christ only knows what's going through his head, I don't think he likes us much.
Mr Henry can rid us off Hodgson right now and give a manager 6 weeks to get his ideas together before a couple of nice January buys. or he can hold onto him, deny him any transfers, and see what happens come May.
And let me just remind you, Torres has reported himself into national team duty as being injured.
Our inability to pull away from the relegation dead pool isn't a problem now, but I certainly don't want to be within 6 points of 17th come late March, and our current pattern of results suggest that we will find it very hard to break away from the likes of Wolves, Birmingham, Wigan, Blackpool, West Ham and Fulham.  All of which will most likely spend a bit of money in January to shore themselves up and score a couple more goals.  All of which have the ability to beat us on any given day.
The West Ham game is the proverbial 6 pointer.  If I was Avram Grant then I'd have seen the Stoke game and would go with Carlton Cole and Frederic Piquionne up front and just replicate the Baron Samedi twins that scared the fuck out of our defenders last weekend.

I shouldn't worry about the name change.

If you read his replies, Mr Henry clearly stated that he was disappointed that the Red Sox are prevented from marketing outside New England - whereas Liverpool is a global brand with a global following. Liverpool FC is where the money lies and thus where their focus will be.

After all, someone named their company Kop Holdings and that turned out well, didn't it?  ;)

How much of a relief is it to have an erudite owner who is willing to see the importance of engaging with the fans. Without shouting platitudes about being custodians of a famous club, they're just getting on with being just that. Early days, but the 'off the pitch' side of things at Liverpool feels like it's returning to the good old days of Peter Robinson et al. Let's hope we don't have to endure too many performances like against Stoke before the playing side matches up.

I'd say look at what they did with the Red Sox if you want an answer to that..

2nd highest payroll in the league and consistently trying to buy the top talent.

Nothing in life is certain but let's judge them on their actions eh. So far so good I'm sure you can agree on that at least.

Liverpool FC owner John Henry sets out his vision for the Reds

OWNER John W Henry has urged Liverpool’s players to give everything to help lead the club up the Premier League table.

The American, who also revealed that his sports investment company New England Sports Ventures (NESV) will change its name to Fenway Sports Group, reiterated his promise to restore the Reds to their former glory.

But he insists success will only come if everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Speaking to the independent Liverpool FC website Red and White Kop (click on the link for the full Q and A), he said: "“The club has gone through a very difficult period and the period has not ended.

“It’s up to us to build a winner going forward.  It’s up to them (the players) to determine to win now. We saw a certain team on the field against Chelsea last week that showed what they can do.

“We also know how competitive the EPL is this year.  There are no guaranteed matches any longer for any club.  This club can be better.

“Blaming the manager or any one particular player is simply wrong.  This club needs to play up to their potential every match.  If they don’t, they won’t win.”

Looking further into the future, Henry vowed to invest in the playing squad but believes the club will conduct most of its business next summer rather than in January.

“We have work to do and must invest in this club to improve it on the field,” he added. “Can that be successfully done in January?  A number of people I’ve talked with doubt it.

“Most people seem to think it will be the summer before we can really begin to improve. So the players – all 11 each week – have to be on the same page every match and have to live up to the history and respect this club has engendered – no matter what.

“I’ve met with a number of our players and had private discussions with some of them.  I’ve been greatly impressed by them personally.  They are all exceptionally bright and they all want to be here.

“The question they have had, rightfully so, is whether or not the club is going to go in the right direction.  They all want to see that. I have been very forthright about our philosophy and about what we are going to try to achieve.

“Some would prefer a quick fix.  Others prefer to focus on the long-term and that is very difficult for most players.

“But this club needs everyone on the same page every day.  We need everyone focused on what needs to be done in the next match facing us and during that match.

“The club should not have to settle for less.  As one insightful player told me, “The spirit of the side needs to be there like a family – as one.”

Responding to fans’ fears about a lack of football expertise and experience at senior management and board level, Henry pointed to the recent appointment of Damien Comolli as director of football strategy.

He said: “Damien has a philosophy that is similar to ours and what has made us successful in Boston.  But he is just our first appointment.

“We don’t know English football, but we do know the sports business and what it takes to be successful.

“You must first of all have the right people in place and you must be able to give them the resources they need to be successful.  With the new Financial Fair Play Rules coming into effect next year, we know that we need to emphasize revenue growth.  That is an area we feel we are very strong.

“The best way to market Liverpool FC globally is to win because the fanbase is already so large globally. If we build the right team on the field, everything off the field will take care of itself.”

Henry said chairman Tim Werner and himself will be frequent visitors to Anfield.

He said: “We will be in London and Liverpool with regularity.  There is a lot to be done.  We speak about the Sox and LFC daily – seven days a week.

“We are working on teleconferencing as well as spending time in Liverpool.  In the digital world of today one can say almost nothing is local.  It has never been easier to work from a distance.

“But like Fenway, Anfield will be hard to stay away from.  We’ve really enjoyed our time in Liverpool thus far.”

Asked what Liverpool’s new owners can give to Liverpool in terms of a personal vision and philosophy, Henry said: “We will have to be bold, thoughtful and aggressive in order to do the right thing for the community, for the supporters and for the club long-term.

“Liverpool values are well known.  What makes Anfield so special beyond the history of the ground are the people who populate Anfield each match.  They value the club first and foremost.

“That is what we have to ensure every person who wears a kit or works for the club at any level has in the their minds first and foremost – the club comes first.

“In Boston every player who puts on a Boston Red Sox uniform knows what it means to wear that uniform.  It’s something very special.  Wearing that uniform has a great deal of meaning.

“We have a Red Sox way that is discussed in spring training each year.  It is a privilege to work for the Boston Red Sox at any level.  We have Red Sox Ambassadors who spend their days ensuring that people outside of the organisation know how much all of us inside the organisation appreciate our fans and visitors to Fenway Park.

“The values that we have to strive for within the club at Liverpool emanate from the supporters.  We cannot have anyone at the club who when they walk into the Academy, Melwood or Anfield, aren’t aware of club values and that the club comes first and foremost.

“We have to have everyone from top to bottom on the same page – exactly the same page.  And we will.

“We will make mistakes and it will be up to us to correct them.  With the level of support this club has, if we are all on the same page, we will be incredibly successful.”

I'd say look at what they did with the Red Sox if you want an answer to that..

2nd highest payroll in the league and consistently trying to buy the top talent.

Nothing in life is certain but let's judge them on their actions eh. So far so good I'm sure you can agree on that at least.

Yeah theyve talked well so far. Will be interesting to see what actions they take

I'm sure whatever actions they take will be for the long term benefit of the club, unlike the last lot.

Can people please credit this site if you use the quotes? Makes a mockery of my profession.

I was a bit suprised to learn that we still have some Spanish staff remaining at LFC. I thought they'd all left with Rafa.

Anyways, excellent read. Thanks for everyone involved in doing this

I am getting the feeling that NESV now subscribe to Roy's view that LFC is a massive rebuilding job. This worries me slightly. A better manager would get more out of the players thus making the building job appear smaller. We still have good players here and it seems as though the manager and owners are covering themselves with this talk of longer term stuff. The longer term is directly affected by the short term results this season.

No CL next season means lower calibre players and managers being interested in coming to LFC come the summer. That wil happen if we keep Roy untill May.

I am delighted to say that this morning we received the next set of answers to the questions you set for John W Henry.

Thank you for all the work done on this by yourself and the others "behind the scenes". I was encouraged by the first load of questions, now about to tackle this next lot.
It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here/ and i'm most obliged to you for making it clear/ that i'm not here

Super read and some very thoughtful - and thought-provoking answers. Thank you everyone involved.

I'm not remotely concerned about Mr Henry's comment on the manager. If you look at it in context, he's talking about a family - as the "insightful" player described.

No matter how badly someone is doing, he's not going to denigrate them. Player or manager, they will be treated with respect until they leave. That's absolutely right in my opinion. We won't get to know about players transferring or managers leaving until they've left the building. No dirty linen being washed in public - the way we used to be.

That is exactly right.

We are slowly getting our club back at last.

Thanks VdM - you are doing a great service for us all.

Thanks Mr. Henry - we are daring to hope......
