The Right Stuff
(1983)
Dir. Philip Kaufman

Cat 3. Adventure

A forgotten masterpiece from the 80s, The Right Stuff is an epic story of man's journey to the stars. A great study of human drive and dedication amidst all obstacles, shot like no other film from its era.

Fright Night (1985) - Horror

There are better horror movies still left, but I could never resist campy schlocky horror and after Lost Boys this is my favourite of the genre. The kind of movie that can only exist in the 80s somehow. Great music, practical FX, some nudity, and Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck in the Princess Bride) stealing the whole show.

Return of the Jedi (1983) - Adventure/Fantasy

No, it's not as good as Star Wars or Empire but so what? Peter Beardsley wasn't as good as Digger or Rushie but he was still far better than almost everyone else in the league. Jedi is the Beardsley of 80's fantasy, and its's easy to forget just how much of the best and most memorable Star Wars stuff comes from this: The Emperor, Slave Leia, the speeder bike chase, the great duel between Vader and black-glove Luke; hell, I'll even go to bat for the Ewoks. They were savage enough to set up huge log traps and eat people. That's far better than Baby Yoda.

The Killer (1989) - Action/War/Western. Full movie here.

Still thought of by many as John Woo's magnum opus, The Killer took the likes of Jean-Pierre Melville and Martin Scorsese and filtered them through a high-octane mix of slow motion dives, explosive gunplay and, inevitably, doves. Chow Yun-fat is brilliant and the film itself is effortlessly stylish and cool, bringing an over-the-top Hong Kong sensibility to the gangster genre.

Here is just one of its many shootout scenes:

The Karate Kid (1984) - Family

It's cheesy as hell, but what is the 80s without Mr Miyagi, the crane kick, and Daniel-san. It's just a perfect feel-good family film, which I watched countless time with my Dad and siblings, yet still enjoy immensely. On the surface it's your classic formulaic main character down in life later overcoming the odds story that's been told a thousand times over. But there's a reason this film is remembered while others aren't and that's the complexity of the Miyagi character. He could have so easily just been a mystical sensei, but we get a scene where we see a sadness in his character when Daniel walks in on him drunk and he candidly shares his stories about the war and losing his wife. It's very smartly played partially for laughs, but has a heartbreaking undertone to it. Interestingly, the film studio wanted to take this whole section out. Ultimately, it turns Miyagi into a real person and elevates the whole film IMO. The wisdom he shares with Daniel and us the audience gains far greater meaning knowing what he has lost himself. Especially his insistence that fighting is a last resort (whilst simultaneously being a total badass). It's a better movie then it's sometimes given credit for being.

The scene in question -

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/njj7wgVmz_Y&amp;t=56s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/njj7wgVmz_Y&amp;t=56s</a>

Now a whole new generation gets to enjoy this world through Cobra Kai, which was only possible because of the world building in this first film. And if anything this show has proved that William Zabka was the real star of the show all along. If you've not seen this ridiculous tongue-in-cheek explainer on Daniel being the real bully, then go watch it now -

Videodrome
(1983)
Dir. David Cronenberg
Starring James Woods

Cat 7. Sci-Fi

I couldn't do an 80s movie draft and not pick a Cronenberg film  ;D this is a cult-classic mind-f**k from the Canadian autuer: the characters/our perception of reality is challenged, our senses and minds are blown away by the body horror on display (we can't help but look and not look away), our addiction/obsession with technology is explored and as ever, a political tangent thrown in too). Thematically ahead of its time. No one makes them like Cronenberg does  :D A gory, sensual and thought-provoking film that gets right under your skin.

Planes Trains and Automobiles -1987  (Comedy)

One of the best holiday movies of all time and best comedies of all time. The attention to detail in each scene is brilliant and Steve Martin and John Candy have such great chemistry. Plus the ending is genuinely heartwarming and beautiful.

Pretty in Pink (1986) - Cat 5. Comedy
Howard Deutch
Molly Ringwald

Arguably the best of the Molly Ringwald oeuvre, and a much better time capsule of what the 80s were really like than "Breakfast Club." This is another one where the supporting cast just imbues the picture with so much warmth. Harry Dean Stanton and Annie Potts are tremendous. James Spader is at his Spaderesque greasy best. Even Andrew McCarthy comes out of this looking at least partially like something other than a vapid, overdressed himbo. But this is Ringwald's spotlight, and she shines like never before or since. Even though she is ginger and has no soul.

The best part of it all, though, is the title track, obviously.

"She doesn't have anything you want to steal - well, nothing you can touch"

Tampopo (1985) - Cat 9. Wildcard

A "noodle western" about two truck drivers (and assorted others) who try to help a single mom figure out the perfect ramen to make her small restaurant a hit. This is a mix of Renoir, Truffaut, Leone and the Marx Brothers. It's gut-bustingly funny food porn. It's Far Eastern slapstick. It's a humanist masterpiece, a must-see film for anyone interested in broadening their cinema horizons.

At the hole where he went in
Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin.
Hear what little Red-Eye saith:
"Nag, come up and dance with death!'"
