"Ask him/her/them, they know all about computers"
« on: June 15, 2019, 11:52:03 am »
I was going to type this into the W10 thread but thought it could warrant its own discussion. There's probably a few people here that work in IT these days, but also people that are known to their friends and family as 'good with computers' and therefore get a ton of questions thrown their way.

So what's the simplest/stupidest things you've been asked?

This week alone I was asked (by two department heads!):

a) How to copy files from the PC to a USB stick. I was on the phone for two minutes talking through the actions of opening two Explorer windows side by side and clicking/dragging files across.

b) To install Google Chrome onto a laptop that definitely had it already. When I told the guy how to open it, he said "but that's the icon for (the name we call our intranet)" so I had to explain to him what a browser was and the concept of a homepage.

The BOFH - https://www.theregister.co.uk/data_centre/bofh - a good way to while away the afternoon reminiscing, empathising and raising a smile (the comments section are usually gold too). Also doubles as a 'how to kill your boss / colleagues' manual - and why people who work around computers should probably be licensed - or have psychological tests every now and then... ;)

I had a mate who never had a clue about computers.  He never knew much of anything because he was a lazy ass.  He only ever wanted to play games and watch porn, but he got given this old PC and once called me to ask me about setting up an email address.

This was in the days were you had to configure the POP yourself, which to be honest I usually needed to check my notes on how to do anyway, so walking him through it over the phone was always going to be a problem.  But when I said to him, "well first, call up the window," and there was this little pause, followed by "... what's a window..?"  I have to say I lost my shit with him slightly ;D  Just told him to do a basic IT course and get back to me because there was no way I could explain anything in a way he'd understand.  Never spoke to him again after that. ;D
I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

That old chestnut! Everytime I used to pick my missus's Android phone the widgets would be spread across the screen and there'd be about 85 apps open in the background, used to do my head in! I guess touch screens and long nails don't mix very well. I installed 'Nova launcher' so that I could lock all the widgets in place and stop her moving the fucking things about. The other thing that she struggled with since they removed the sound 'mute' in Android 5 and replaced it with the 'interruptions' bollox was being able to place the phone into 'silent'. I installed 'custom switches' and set it up so that she can mute the phone from the touch of a widget button on the main screen.

I recall working in tech support for AOL UK years back and getting a customer swearing at me on the line because their wireless wasn't working.

Turns out they hadn't even plugged in the router, it was sitting in a box on top of their fridge. Apparently they thought wireless meant totally wireless.

True story.

Been in IT 36 years, had some cracking ones over the years. Late 90’s had a request from a senior manager to provide the internet on a cd or as much as we could fit, recently had one where a major incident manager suggested that if increased page files were solving an issue we should go out and buy a load more page files !

The thing that absolutely does my head in is when friends/families have problems with their network/computers/tablets/phones/other and ask me to 'sort it out'

I ask them to hang around as usually there are several things they need to do - logon, enter passwords, confirm actions etc.

Then when you are there beavering away, they are doing other stuff, so you continually have to stop and get their attention as they are 'tidying up' or hanging washing out or cooking or whatever

In future, to save myself annoyance I think I'll insist that people get all their passwords into order and logons into order and are prepared to sit there for a couple of hours while I help them.

I find it astonishing even now that when I say "OK. I need to logon to this now, what's your password" and get "Dunno" or "Er. I have it somewhere, probably.."

Usually turns a job that should take 5 minutes into something that takes hours and hours and pisses everyone off.

I had to start pretending I don't use kodi any more and have forgotten how it works because they changed their system. I still help family but so many people bought those kodi boxes and had no clue what a repo was or how any of it worked and those add-ons break constantly.

Never used a kodi box, but just use the app on my smart tv. Are they actually more complicated than the app or? Because it took my 2 minutes to sort it out on my tele.

And yeah I get this, got a computing degree, built my own PC etc. the worst fucking thing is when someone asks me to help them, I do, and then they blame me if it then gets worse. No, I didn't 'break it more', it's your fault you don't run anti viral software, visit dodgy websites, and download dodgy software to allow you to 'watch free movies using this simple free software'.

Even people in IT tech will usually just google the problem, unless it's something like 'turn it off and on'.
Pretty happy with Arse taking it.

Disappointing.

Bane of my life this. Eventually got so sick of it that whenever family or friends ask me for help now and it involves a username/email/password I make a note of it to keep for myself. Because it is guaranteed they will call back one day with a further issue and not have a bloody clue what their log in is. Got a collection of about 20 now. It's daft on my part. But it saves a whole load of extra hassle on top of the hassle of sorting out what I've probably already talked them through half a dozen times before.

Did my degree in IT, then worked in IT support for about 7 years working my way up and now have moved into IT Project Management, so have done absolutely no hands-on computer support for over 2 years now and with that, I backed off all friends/family requests for help that involve sitting infront of someone's computer. I just cannot be arsed with it any more and I am so glad that I feel like I am forgetting so much of it.

I can still offer answers to questions if people ask but I have definitely backed away. 'I don't work in IT support anymore' or 'I don't have the tools/resources' kind of suffices and now I rarely get asked. Usually it's my Dad needing help with his iPad, which is fine.

I absolutely hated the 'I need a new laptop, can you recommend one please?' Like there are only 10 to choose from.

And just the general vagueness of people. 'Why is my computer so slow?' or 'My computer blue screened yesterday - why?'

I am done and dusted with that shitty world.

Same here. I have a bit of part-time help to set things up and configure non-Mac kit but we've saved ten of thousands over the years in IT support by using Macs. I know it wouldn't work for large organisations but for a small creative business like ours Macs have been a godsend.

Luckily no-one asks me to fix pc's anymore, except the kids, so I get peace from that now.

One of my big hates is at work. We'll get a change request, it'll get approved by the relevant group, go via the IT project team. I'll do the user Design specification for the users, the technical spec for our side. It'll all get approved by all interested parties, software development will get done, front end screens get changed, sometimes new database tables etc are created. It'll go right through testing then the fuckers will have second thoughts and the software will sit there unreleased for years until eventually we copy it out somewhere and it gets forgotten about. Hoping someone can help me out with this.

I've been cleaning up an old MacBook to make sure I've centralised all my files. I've found a leap of photos from when I lived in London which have the extension 'jpg.pms' and I can't open them. I know they're photos of my travels as they all have proper file names (thanks to the ex).

Anybody have any idea how I can open them as I'd really like to keep them?

Cheers

copy one to a diff folder and try renaming it to remove the '.pms' and see if it's a proper jpg.

Some misrable buggers in here, don't you guys get any satisfaction from helping elderly technophobe relatives? It's bad enough for us youngster's, heaven knows what it must be like for older people dealing with some of these technologies. I've been into computers and software since the age of about eleven and some of the innovations annoy me for example why did they change the cut and paste icon from a scissor and brush to a rectangle and a slightly different rectangle on phones and tablets. Some of the users interfaces on devices are just crap and I'll conceived, no wonder people have problems.

Is this even a big thing anymore? Most people I know over 70 are very comfortable with phones, laptops etc and a lot of them worked with computerised systems before they retired. I'm 53 this year and I was one of the last age groups that didn't have access to computers at school, but plenty of others my age and older did. At work, those of us who look after and develop the companies in house software are at least 48 yrs old, going up to almost 60.
