I know this is the laptop thread but if you are looking for decent performance in games and a large screen you might be better off with a small desktop PC and nice monitor.  For that money you could buy/build an absolute scorcher - even an 1800 quid 'gaming' laptop would struggle to compete with a £800 PC.

So I bought the HP 350 G2 and it's a decent laptop, nice and quiet, fast and decent spec for the price.
But I noticed the screen has a blue hue and I thought hmmmm.... so I played about and adjusted/calibrated the colour and got it a little better but not great.

So I did the upgrade from W7 to W10 (stupidly) thinking it maybe a W7 thing and not a laptop thing.... obviously not.
It's not a full blue screen and it's very subtle but also very obvious and very annoying.
I compared to my old laptop and also plugged into my TV via HDMI and the whites were white and the blacks were black as opposed to whiteish blue and blackish blue.

Very annoying.

Contacted HP and they said it's probably a hardware issue and they are going to come and collect on Tuesday and it'll take 8-10 days to check/fix and get back to me.

Kinda wishing I'd listened to my friends who told me to avoid HP but oh well.... it'll get sorted I supose.

Really annoying though, I got it Wednesday (just gone) and other than the screen issue it seems a nice laptop.

Sorry you've had grief mate.  From what you've said it looks like a dodgy LCD.

There are only a handful of manufacturers who make LCDs, most are based in South Korea (LG, Samsung) and Taiwan (Innolux, AUO), with some in Japan (Sharp) and others in China.  Between them these will these supply screens for pretty much all the mainstream PC brands so I would be surprised if it was an HP specific problem.

It sounds like you have been unlucky - hope your retailer looks after you and gets it sorted asap.

I didn't contact retailer,  contacted HP direct and they're coming to collect it on monday.
They said it was a hardware issue probably.

Like I said it's pretty subtle but very annoying.

When your 7 year old shitty laptop looks better (screen) than your your spanking new one.. it's annoying.

It's all good it'll hopefully get sorted.

Just bought myself a Lenovo Ideapad 300 15.6 in with 8gb Ram and 1tb hard disk running windows 10 £257 from Amazon.
It isn't spectacularly quick but it does what I need from  it (general browsing, YouTube, iPlayer etc).

I must admit, I'm not a hardware guru so cant extol its pitfalls, but the fact is I needed a budget decent spec PC.This seemed quite cheap for what you get, and as I don't do gaming etc, I figured I probably don't need dedicated graphics and stuff. (The CPU runs the display).

Just to update - I cancelled the HP pickup and have sent it back to laptops direct today.
After reading about the screen online at notebook check and other sites, it seems that this HP just has a substandard screen. I mean it was pretty woeful. The blue hue could have been removed apparently by downloading some software etc but Fuck that. I contacted LD and they said sorry I wasn't happy but send it back in pristine condition and if it passes their tests and meets their criteria I'll get a refund.. so I posted it today.
I know some of it is probably the matte screen but the colours were terrible and reading around, reviewers weren't impressed.

Should have done more research I think.
And this is the issue with buying online - you don't get to view the screen etc.
Most places like curry's/PC world stock a limited number of laptops too so no real way to view there and then buy online.

Hopefully I get a full refund...they seemed very strict in the returns T&C and had charges for various things.
Sigh...oh well.

Fingers crossed.

what's the keyboard like on that mate?.....is it the integrated/moulded key type? if so I might go for it......ive tried a few Lenovo's but they had a flimsy sort of clip-on type - just wondering if this does or not as I cant tell from the pics

The keyboard is probably the weakpoint. As you say, it seems a bit spongy/flimsy. Similar to the keyboards I've seen on Sony Vaio's. Defo not as good as the keyboard on the old Thinkpads. I suppose only time will tell whether it will last or not.

Out of date Laptop
« Reply #691 on: March 2, 2016, 09:33:57 pm »
Evening all,

Not used my Laptop in almost a year on account of it being shit. Fired it up earlier but can't even get onto Chrome as I haven't got latest flash plug ins etc. It's Windows 7 which I'm guessing is very out of date now.

Do I need to install a newer version of Chrome? Update flash? All of the above? If so is that straight forward? Laptop is being so slow that everything is a struggle.

Cheers for any help.

Anything I can do with this old piece of shit or do I just need to buy a new one?!

Leave it turned on overnight and disable the power save options. It may be in update hell where everything is trying to update because it is all out of date. Let the update programs do their stuff and see if it all settles down.

Remove anything that you don't really need. Stop as much as you can from auto starting. And wait for ages.

Pretty much this, I recently had to do a fresh install of Windows 7 and, overall, I think it was about 500 updates off and on and even then, leaving it on overnight didn't get it all done so don't forget about the download times too.  Boot up Windows Update (type "wuapp" without the quote marks in the search box on the Start Menu if you have Windows 7) and probably unclick the Windows 10 update too in Optional Updates.  Then "Show All Available Updates" and you'll most likely have a shit-ton to get through.  Let them download, your computer will probably reboot a few times, repeat the same again for as many times as needed (the updates will need updates) until it's updated.

Then your best bets are probably Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup.

Navigate to here ~ "Control Panel\System and Security\System" then post up the specs of the lappie. If it's shit straight off the bat and worth a tenner than it'll make a great retro paperweight and you can get your arse to Currys to find a replacement. Upgrading at this stage will be throwing money down the drain.

If the specs look ok then yeah get the thing up to date via Windows Update. I'd then add these two (assuming you can actually access the net in some fashion?)...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/security-essentials-download
https://www.malwarebytes.org/

Once you get those two installed, run both (one at a time) and make sure your PC is clean. After that you can opt to download, install and use one or both of these...

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

Both will look to remove anything harmful remaining on your lappie and potentially fix any faults they may of caused (highjacked shortcuts etc).

Following that I'd probably uninstall Chrome if it's still playing up and install a fresh copy.

Then get the tissues and lube at the ready and fire up Pornhub ::) :-X :wave (hang on is the wave a bit weird given the circumstances?)

Thanks for advice so far. Have to confess I'm a simpleton when it comes to this.

Titi - I did try to run a Microsoft Security sweep last night. Seemed to be doing it, then got to the end and said it couldn't update.

A bit chicken and egg this question but how do you get online to update Chrome when the he version I have is so painfully slow and makes getting online virtually impossible?

Final thing to say is we do have photos etc on there that don't want to lose so would ideally want to update rather than restore factory settings etc.

Worst case scenario and you can't get it up and running but you're desperate to save the photos (or porn):

1. Buy an external caddy
2. Open the old laptop up and remove the hard drive
3. Slot the hard drive into the caddy
4. Plug the caddy into a newer machine
5. It will appear as an external hard drive
6. Drag and drop the photos to the other machine
7. Back the photos up to an online storage site or whatever

I am aware of the fact that you'll need another machine to do this but I'm sure you can find someone else with a laptop to help.

Someone who has openly suggested they aren't confident with a computer is hardly going to rebuild the machine or install Ubuntu...

Chrome seems to be your biggest concern at the moment. Chrome should automatically install Flash updates, so you won't need to manually install anything. You can see if your Chrome can be updated, which it probably can if you haven't used it in over a year. Open Chrome > Menu (looks like a burger!) > Settings > About and from there you can see if it can be updated - chances are it will update itself.

When you start it up/shut it down are you getting any update/configuring messages? I would agree with whoever said above that your machine is probably way behind on updates. In the evening, go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Check for Updates... This will probably take a while but come back to it after 30-45 minutes and see what it has found. You can let it update and leave it to run through the night.

However, if you have done this and it appears to get 'stuck' then you may want to try installing them in smaller batches i.e. when it searches for updates and shows available updates, you can tick/untick what you want it to install. Might be best to try it in smaller batches. One of my users had this issue a few weeks back, and it was one update amongst 68 that was killing the machine and preventing it from updating. I just did it in smaller batches to try and narrow down the fucker. I would normally wipe and rebuild to be honest but it was his home computer, not his work computer, and he stuff on there he needed, so I played the long game. Took about 4/5 hours as they machine was dreadfully slow but the updates were preventing him from accessing the internet and doing anything, really. 4/5 hours but I only had to do something for a few minutes every half hour or so.
