2008/09?
Probably 90/91 think we won our first 8 league games. Hardly lost a game til December and 19 looked within touching distance....

We still look a bit rusty passing wise but I think most teams this season will struggle to open us up with midfield smothering the opposition and then the brick wall of VDV and Allison. So for me its how we play the low block bastards. Both Leicester and Palace won't play open and will look to hit us on the counter. On that basis there is potential to draw one of these but we look ahead of others. Spurs playing more openly will play into our hands and I think we'll beat them this time round.

so the next 4 I see

v palace 2 - 0
v Brighton 3- 0
v Leicester 2 - 0
v Spurs 2- 0

I don't know if we'll get maximum points from the next 4 games. What I do know is that, if we do, I'll feel genuinely confident of a title challenge. A good start, I fear, is not going to be enough to challenge this City team. We need an almost impeccable one.

We probably need around 90 points to challenge for the title. I don't think City will be able to match their record again, but 90+ doesn't seem unlikely. They got 45 in the last 19 even when the league was practically over in the final months.

As you say, we need to be almost impeccable from the start to get first spot. This team is exceptional, the best we've had in a long time, but they need to prove it again and again and again. We need at least 12 from these first 5 games, and I think we will. Win the first 4 and then anything can happen against Spurs.

Normally, I would have doubts that a team could produce another season like City did last year, but Guardiola annoyingly has a track record of his teams doing this.

So it will take an incredible effort, but all the early signs are good for us.

Do you expect city to drop a lot of points in the coming weeks?

I remember Peps second season (14/15) at Bayern when some of his players (all the Germans) came back late from the world cup. They struggled with some injuries and didn't look as fresh as they looked in his first season. Pointwise it was his worst season at Bayern (79 points). I think City will start well but could have a bad run in between as some of their key players did not have a long break in the summer. On the other hand if there is any team in the league that could handle injuries to 2-3 key players its city.

Having said that, having most of the players back early this summer could be key for this season.

I expect a tough game at Palace and comfortable wins against Brighton and Leceister. Draw at Spurs. So 8-10 points from the next 4 games. You can not win the league by November but you can loose it. So should be within striking distance when we play City in Oktober

Title challenge pace would demand 12 points from every 15 on offer.

4 wins from the opening 5 games as a minimum, anything else is a bonus

I can see us doing that in this 5 game block.

I’m just wondering how long it’ll take for this block of five to now become a block of six rather than five at a time then a fresh five. I think we need 12 as a minimum. I’d love 13, and if we got fifteen I’d believe! We need to be ridiculously strong to keep up with Manchester City.

Vardy will be suspended when we face Leicester in two weeks. Should be a huge boost for us, as he is always the one causing us problems.

Yeah he always scores against us, and no Mahrez either obviously. They'll still be difficult, they're organized when they want to be, and they have some decent pace on the break to be a nuisance. Let's take care of Brighton first :)

Completely agree. I only brought it up since Leicester decided not to appeal and we play them in our first block of five.

No disrespect to Brighton but I expect this Saturday to be a walk in the park. Any difficulties in dispatching them and we need to iron out any flaws asap to mount any kind of title challenge.

Hopefully 11-12 points. Tottenham and Chelsea away are very difficult tasks, needless to say. Also Leicester away could be a hassle. Brighton and Southampton at home need to be three points each.

13 or 15 would be a mega bonus.

Well they will be up for it, they'll be feeling themselves after United, and they were tough to break down initially in the last game of the season [once we scored it was all good]. Im expecting a much better performance from us this weekend.

I think we'll beat Brighton, Leicester and Spurs - so 5 wins out of 5.

Brighton is pretty much a given and could be a cricket score, Leicester without Mahrez shouldn't be an issue, especially now VVD is there to take care of Vardy who's usually a pain in the Harris for us. And what I've seen of the spuds so far hasn't lead me to fear anything from them, we're a different animal to the one that got stomped there last season and it's time to put them in their place.

Might be tight but I'd be surprised if we don't come out 2/3-1 winners. Their game vs United might have some bearing on it, lose to the scum and they could be really vulnerable, beat them and they might have a spring in their step. I don't sweat Spurs at all though, as long as Kane doesn't start flopping around all over again it shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

The thing with City is they have two sets of forwards, a pace set and a ball playing set. Basically meaning if they’ve got a forward line for each kind of defence they’ll face. It’s ridiculous strength and we’ll need a bit of luck to our do them over 38

Leicester away, Spurs away, Saints at home, Chelsea away, City at home. Probably the toughest stretch of the season? I'd be happy with 10.

Tell you what though. If we go into the City game still top of the league, the belief will be through the roof

Leicester lost Mahrez in the summer and Vardy is suspended so they'll be weaker than usual.

I'm actually (maybe stupidly) already banking on beating Leicester and Saints. The other three are a toss up, think we'll get 4 from those, not where what result in what game

Saints, Chelsea, and City are a part of the 2nd group of 5 games.  Leicester and Spurs are in this group of 5.

In order to get to 90 points we need 12 points per group of 5.  Win our next game and we’ll be looking good heading towards the Spurs match.  The next group will be a tough one, as you said.

Should be set, otherwise people end up discussing different things. Which kinda defeats the purpose of the thread, predicting and comparing opinions of points totals over 5 fixtures.

You're right it doesn't cause harm though.

Should be hoping for a win this weekend to set us up for Spurs which will be a toughie. Leicester could be tricky but I'm going for the win. Spurs, I'm really not sure about that one. Hoping for no howlers from the ref, would be a good start, and if Naby has settled a bit more by then I'm confident.

Got to agree with that. must win games, I think we'll flatten Leicester tactically,  clean sheet, albeit perhaps not a high scoring game and then put our money where our mouth is with a dominating display against Spurs.

This is a season defining group of 5 especially when you bear in mind international break and CL group games. I would say that if we still head the league after these , which probably means a minimum of 12 points we can start to dream.

Hmmmm, Puel's had our number since the day he rode into the PL. Not saying we won't win, but I don't think flattening them tactically is a very likely outcome.
