The 29-year old, who was released by Liverpool in May after an injury-troubled spell at Anfield, was widely expected to move to Portsmouth within the next few days.

However, the Australia international has risked the backlash of English football fans with the decision to join the Turkish club.

The player angered fans at Elland Road after he refused to sign a new deal with the club, instead holding them to ransom until they accepted a cut-price £5 million offer from Liverpool.

The move will also heighten the tension between fans of Leeds United and their Turkish counterpart which stems from the dreadful scenes witnessed in 2000 before the sides’ UEFA Cup semi-final, with two innocent fans of the English club stabbed to death during violent clashes.

It was not the first incident of violence involving Galatasaray, with Manchester United fans also targeted by hooligan sects in 1993 and more recently during Champiosn League fixtures.

Kewell’s career has failed to hit the heights of his spell with The Whites, where he established himself as one of the best left-wingers in Europe, and he now looks set to sign a three-year deal with the club.

Galatasaray’s official website has announced his arrival at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, news that will disappoint fans and potential suitors alike.

Must have signed for Galatasary because of the 3 year deal. I would be shocked if anyone in the big 3 leagues offered more than a 1 year contract.

If he was going to sign for Cardiff I might have understood some resentment but Gala? Na don't see it.

, terrible move from hk, think he shulda stayed sumwhere closer to englang and taken the deal at roma or fulham, this move hurts even more as im an aussie who was hopin hed be insome sort of form for the asian wold cup qualifiers, sad if this transfer is true

Sure neither are very impressive, but why the hate-fest for one former LFC player and not for another? What's the problem with so many of our fans that we can't just wish a bloke ravaged by injuries during his LFC career luck and get on with it. I think it is sad to give Kewell rubbish for being injured - its not as if he was getting injured on purpose.

I can understand the frustration in regards to his wages and playing time - but not everyone in football is sincere like Fernando Redondo and will refuse wages when injured.

I applaud Kewell for his mentality in trying to regain fitness, given he has had setback after setback. He has always tried to do his best and get back to full fitness but it hasnt really worked out for him.

I thought he did ok when he did manage to play - especially away to Marseille, he linked up well with Torres...

So yeah I have no hard feelings against Kewell, just best of luck in Turkey.

Think it the slower pace and slightly less physicality of the league will be of benefit to him

That was my first thought....apart from relief that he has gone. Thats the end of his hero status at Leeds, there really is no loyalty in sport anymore.

I would be interested to know what he is on at Galatasaray.

Roma supposedly offered him €1m per season which is a massive drop in current wages. Galatasaray must have offered an attractive package.

EDIT: I see rocco has quoted his wages as $3m per season. Well done to his agent.

...big difference in both offers ...but have a feeling if he was on 70k here , then surely Rafa offered 15k-30k....was it his pride that made him say no.
