This news is from April 11th and is of little relevance ... but the LEGENDRY ex-player deserves some of our respect ;D

Mad Erik set for Hamburg exit

Quote
http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/030411/21/dxk2n.html

Legendary Liverpool striker Erik Meijer could be allowed to leave Hamburg in the summer if the German side fail to qualify for Europe.
Hamburg are currently well-placed in fourth and may yet sneak into next season's Champions League, though the Uefa Cup is more likely, although by no means certain.

Should Hamburg finish outside the top five though, it could be the trigger for them to let Meijer and his team-mate Ingo Hertzsch leave.

Both are important squad members, with 25-year-old defender Hertzsch more of a regular in the team than 33-year-old Dutch striker Meijer, but they are also due to reach the end of their current contracts in June.

Sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said: "We will not take any decision before we know whether we will play European football next season."

Meijer never set the world on fire during his stay at Anfield but his enthusiasm and never-say-die attitude made him a firm favourite with the Reds faithful.

Hes Dutch, Hes Red, Hes off his fucking ed ...!

(Oh and the best Dutch player ever managed to spur Hamburg on to the UEFA Cup place - after Keegan and now Erik, Hamburg must love us ... two legends!  Anyway, he's offski to European giants Aachen next year, lets face it it was only a matter of time before one of the big clubs came in for Erik.)

Nah, we had a disapointing season last year and I don't think Houllier wants to spend the full £30M+ transfer kitty on one player.

Although we would make about £40M in his image rights, he's massive in the Far East.

He was getting released by Hamburg but then they decided he could stay, although I don't think he's played this year maybe due to injury or somethin.

He's now playing his trade at Alemannia Aachen in Germany.

If anyone knows what this means as it's in German..... It looks like he's scored 4 in 16, but I may be wrong!

Erik Meijer Interview.

Conducted last night in Iceland by the boys from lfchistory.net

http://www.lfchistory.net/redcorner_articles_view.asp?article_id=490

Erik Meijer is still a popular figure with Liverpool fans because of his fighting spirit. The BIG Dutchman is now the captain of 2nd division Alemannia Aachen in Germany and he spoke exclusively to Arnie, editor of LFChistory, about his Liverpool career.

When your name is mentioned, it’s quite evident that you’re still quite a popular player with the fans. Why do you think that is?

I hope it is because I give the impression that I always wanted to work as hard as possible when I was wearing that red shirt. I was proud to play for Liverpool. I had to compete with three other strikers, Owen, Heskey and Fowler. They were all better than me, so I had to make the decision to either sit and watch football or go somewhere else and play football.

You always seemed to give 110% in each game you played. Screaming and encouraging the other players. Your presence on the field seemed to lift other players to a higher level.

I hope it came out that way, because that's always how I play. I play the same way with Aachen. I am a player who can make a team play better. I am not going to score 20-25 goals a season. That is not me. But I am a player who makes other players feel more comfortable and use me to get better.

How do look back at the time when you were playing with Liverpool?

A very positive period. I was there for one and a half year and liked it from the first moment I stepped in. I was a Liverpool fan when I was a kid and when the club asked me to play for Liverpool I didn't need much time to put my signature on that contract. It was done in one week and I was very proud to be there.

How did you like working under Houllier?

He was a very good manager. In his second year, after I had left in the winter, they won five trophies. He could be very hard, but fair. I didn't leave because of Houllier. He could only play 11 players and have six or seven players around the squad and I wasn't there for the last couple of months. I then decided to go somewhere else.

Heskey's arrival put an end to your Liverpool career...

That killed me, because he is more or less the same structure, the same kind of player. A big guy up front. That's always in football, one comes, another one has to leave. Unfortunately that was me, but the show must go on. I had good years at Hamburg. I am now 35 and still enjoying my football.

Do you still follow Liverpool. Looking out for their results?

Yes, I still follow them. They have a full schedule with Champions league so it's going to be a busy season with a new coach. Benítez is a good coach, who had some great results in Spain, but the fact is you also have to bring it over to England and it's not easy for foreign managers to get settled in England. Arsene Wenger has been a long time at Arsenal though, and as soon as you're settled, you're settled for a long time.

Chris Bascombe said recently on a website, that he once had a minor altercation with you at Melwood, because he had written an article in Liverpool Echo about Liverpool's strikeforce at the time and had forgotten to mention you?

If I don't like somebody I tell it in the their face. I am very honest with everybody. If they are fair to me, I am fair to them. I have no secrets. If I don't want to talk, I don't want to talk, that's it. I am okay with Chris, but when they only talk about the big names, you have to also put your name forward.

Some Liverpool fans mentioned that they met you in Dortmund before the Alaves match and had drink or two with you.

A few too much, yeah. I went over with some friends and they were all wearing a Liverpool shirt with my name and number on it. Some Liverpool fans were asking where they got that shirt. I had my jacket over my shirt. They answered: "Well, because Erik is here" and then the catastrophe started. I had to sing some songs for the boys. It was a great afternoon. One of my best times as a supporter, being on the big square and singing songs.

Your stats with Liverpool are 27 games and 2 goals.

Correct, that's one goal every ten games... [laughs]. It was a great start. The Hull game was the first game I started and I scored two goals and Liverpool won. It was a very good start, but it was just a start.

Well - just for those of you wondering what mad Erik is up to..
He's as from this year the Marketing Manager (!) of newly promoted team Allemania Aachen in the German Bundesliga. In this capacity, he gave an interview to one of the main newspapers in Germany (Suddeutsche Zeitung) and funnily enough they asked him how he felt that the club's stadium (Tivoli) compares with Anfield.
He first tried to dodge the question by asking if he could pass on this. As the journalist insisted, he said something like
:' To be honest, I'm a Liverpool fan and the atmosphere in Anfield is quite simply the best that there is in football. Let's just say that Tivoli can be a bit of a mini Anfield'. ;D

They also asked him if he could still score headers. To which he answered that he still knows how to camp in the box.

ps: he's supposed to be THEIR marketing boss??

Cult hero Erik Meijer to be patron of AFC Liverpool

Apr 15 2008 Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL FC folk hero Erik Meijer has been signed up as the official patron of a new amateur football club.

AFC Liverpool has recruited the former centre forward Meijer, who became a cult figure at Anfield in 1999 for his eccentric approach to playing.

The team, created for fans fed up with rising Premiership ticket prices, has amassed 900 interested people who are pledging sums of money.

Meijer said: “ I wish you all the best in the league and hope to see some good results. Come on!”

Plans for a groundshare are ongoing and AFC Liverpool hope to soon be running a first team, reserve team and under-16 side.

Well in Erik lad!
Ya we have been talking in the half time, we need to do something, we need to change things and maybe if we score then it will be different and we scored and it was different.  - Rafael Benitez Ataturk Stadium Istanbul 26 May 2005
