Not too much of a leap and you are not being too ambitious for 2007-8.  To have an idea of what changes you should make to your training, let me have an idea of how much you train now - PM if you like.  The answer could be more speed and strength sessions rather than more miles.  Halves are good as part of the training but you need to follow a marathon schedule to run a marathon.

I've qualified for Boston in my agegroup with my Berlin time but as it is valid for a year and a half I might save it for 2007 and try and run a faster one in spring.  Thinking of Rome.

3h10m for 18-34-year-olds

Shit that's a fast qualifying time! Is that just to be able to enter? How does it work-do you need, for example to have done two sub 3hr 10s in the last yr or so?

Just one time, in the previous 18 months or so.  More here:

Run at whatever pace you would outdoors for a particular type of session - just set the incline to a minimum of 0.5 (ideally 1) and that will replicate the lack of wind resistance indoors.  No other adjustments necessary.  For my last marathon, I did 75% of my training indoors outdoors.  Alternatively, do the random or hill settings to give you a rolling kind of run.

I've not been able to run for over 2 weeks due to Piriformis Syndrome.I'm stuck with bike work and to be honest its pissing me off :( Anyone got any tips?

PS
I'm doing self massage using a tennisball after finding this

Any muscle repetitively used needs to have an opportunity to recover. This recovery can either be on Nature’s clock, or can be facilitated and sped up with proper knowledge and treatment. Since the muscle is tightening due to overuse, continued use will only make it worse. This injured muscle needs to relax and have increased blood flow encouraged to it for more rapid healing. This tightness that exists also reduces the normal blood flow going to the muscle reducing the speed with which the muscle can recover. To encourage fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the muscle is the most powerful means of getting the muscle to begin to relax and function normally. Multiple massages per day to this area is greatly encouraged.

The next step in this "recovery" process is to use a tennis ball under the butt and hip area. While sitting down on the floor, roll away from the side of involvement and place a tennis ball just inside the outer hip bone under the butt area. As you begin to allow your weight onto the tennis ball, note areas of increased pain and soreness. Trigger points will tend to accumulate in a repetitively used muscle, and until these toxins are manually broken up and eliminated, the muscle will have an artificial ceiling with regard to flexibility potential and recovery potential. So, if it’s sore and hurts while your sitting on it, you’re doing a good job. Let the ball work under each spot for 15-20 seconds before moving it to another area. Once you’ve been on the ball for 4-5 minutes, now put the ankle of the involved leg over the knee of the non-involved leg (crossing your legs). Now place the tennis ball just inside the outer hip bone again and work the tendon of the piriformis muscle. While this pain is typically excruciating and takes some time to effectively reduce, the benefits here are huge. Be patient, be consistent and good things will happen.

Certainly seems to be helping.

Sounds similar to something that my girlfriend had last year - she had sports massage for about 8-12 sessions to sort it out. It seemed to do the trick as there has been no recurrence.

got my first ever ´proper´run (10k) 2 weeks on friday.
first target is getting round but ideally would like to be under an hour.

any tips on training for the last couple of weeks?
what about leg weights?
would you do them after a treadmill session or before for example???

wouldn't bother with them at all. Before and after each run you need to do plenty of stretches.

For longer distances you need to taper your running training in the week preceeding the run. I presume it's similar for a 10k, so I'd do little traiing during the preceeding week. Maybe, say, a 3k run on the tuesday. Eat pasta too.

I agree....

but disagree on this point on two accounts:

1. The reason for reducing your mileage for longer runs is to help store glycegen and carbs. This is not needed on shorter runs. As long as you take things relatively easy, you can even do a short 3 - 5km run the day before.

2. Carboloading will not help in a run of this nature, only for runs of over 2 hours in length.

Well done Archie.

Take it easy for a couple of days or so, and your legs will feel as good as new.

What was the course like?

Well done Archie, easily under an hour for your first 10k.

Booked myself a half-marathon at the end of January having not done a race since October. Going nice and easy, then planning for my third marathon (thanks for the advice, Raul!)

Mostwelcome mate. My runnning plans have been delightfully disrupted by the arrival of twin girls so no spring marathon. Will try for one in October- may be Chicago!

Well, I've now started training for the Paris marathon in April. Approx 12 weeks to go. Ran 6 8 milers in december, my best time being 48:33. Did a 16 miler trhis morning (2 laps of my usual 8 mile course) in 1 hr 56 mins. I figure that 16 miles in broadly 2 hrs means I may do 24 miles in 3 hours, then with another 2.2 miles to go, at say, 10 min miles, that'll be a marathon finishing time of 3 hrs 22 mins. That would be pleasing.

Thing is, I'm running withoutthe aid of water at the mo. Now that I'm doing longer distances i feel i must start carrying water. My body was crying out for refreshment (and food) or an energy boost by about 13 miles today. As that's provided in  a proper marathon, hopefully that'll boost performance on the day.

I've heard different stories as to how far you should run (maximum) in your training sessions. I've generally heard 19 or 20 miles, assumingly it is the added adrenaline, and the crowd etc that'll pull you though the last 7.2. Makes sense I suppose because after today's 16 miler my knee feels fucked. I'm running with the aid of a knee support now too.

I did the bristol 1/2 marathon in 2004. Trained for 2 weeks prior to that and i did the bristol 1/2 marathon again in 2005. I trained for about 2 months prior to that. No other races though and no training in between. This will be my first Marathon in April. So very new to it all really mate.

Doing the London Marathon again this year....we did it as a team in 2004, carrying a very large Jules Rimet Trophy around the course....raising £20000 in the process..

I got a call from Gav a few months ago asking me if I wanted to do it again, sadly for me I was in the pub at the time and had a few too drink...I agreed....

Been training pretty hard recently doing about 20 miles a week, that will increase nearer the time...have to say completing the marathon is an amazing feeling...

One day I will do it on my own without the others, but for the moment its about raising money...

If anyone would like to support us....http://www.justgiving.com/backformoore

I think after the first mile it settles down and people can run the pace that they want to a certain extent.

the crowd support was superb once again even though the weather was not the best for spectating. it is one of the best events that this country organises in my opinion and I would recomend anybody to do it if they are able and determined. its tough but whatever time you finish in it is an achievement.

I'm well chuffed as I've just done 3 weeks of 5 days a week running.Which I've not be able to do for 2 years due to work/hip injury. Also lost about 4 kilos so slowly getting back into shape.
